I saw both Betty and Laurie live, but I preferred Laurie. Grizabella is a role I'm really surprised that Andrea McArdle never played. She would have sounded amazing singing Memory.
Hey Dottie!
Did your colleagues enjoy the cake even though your cat decided to sit on it? ~GuyfromGermany
Betty Buckley nbr 1.... Andrea McArdle said she didnt think she sang it well herself..(not that Betty didnt sing it well LOL) just wanted to clear this up I disagree i heard Andrea sing it on Merv Griffin years ago and thats how I learned to love the song..and Andrea
I've never heard anyone sing Memory as well as Elaine Paige.

Laurie Beechman - she was the only reason I sat through that horrible show. If I didn't want to see her sing that song,I would have bolted after 15 minutes.
Now living in DC. I really have to change my name on the board.
Little-known triva -- in Eliot's original draft, the character was Jizzabella the Grammar Cat, which had to be changed to sidestep the problems of such a character's associations with certain modern vernacular.
Didn't see her, and I know she's not one of the choices, but Gay Marshall on the French Cast Recording is amazing! Best show version of the song in my opinion.
For some reason I saw many version of this show. Broadway, Tours and such... Hands down the best will always be Laurie Beechman. She was such an amazing voice and talent that was taken way too soon.
I also did enjoy Liz Calloway, Kim Criswell and I remember seeing Lillias White.
"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."
as for the international recordings, the lady in the Hamburg one is quite touching, strong belt and very emotional, its also a live recording so that helped too (I cant remember her name though, Andrea something I believe)
