Best Cast Recordings of All Time?

So recently I discovered that my local public library has a pretty large collection of cast recordings of tons of shows. There aren't too many new ones but the library is on a loaning program with other libraries that give me access to lots of material.

What cast recordings do you think are the best of all time that I should listen to? (Show and Production) There are lots of threads about best recordings of a particular show but I haven't seen threads asking for lists of "best recordings of any show." Since some of the shows would probably be ones that I've never seen or know little about, recordings that provide some context and include essential dialogue are probably preferable.

For me: My Fair Lady (Original London Cast because it's in stereo), Dreamgirls (OBC), and South Pacific (OBC)

I would have to add Company (OBC), Oklahoma (1979 Broadway), Les Miserables (Original London) and On the Twentieth Century.

There are a few, but I think Evita with Patti LuPone would be somewhere at the top of my list. It's not even one of my favorite scores I just love hearing Patti sing it.
That's right! Underscore mother-fu@#ers!

I'm just biased but obviously I think Les Mis is high up on the list. Phantom too I guess. And Wicked.

Among the lesser-known ones, I would say try Greenwillow, Tenderloin, Milk and Honey, and Dear World.

They're top-notch.

GYPSY (OBC) because of a spectacular Merman.
MY FAIR LADY (OBC) rather than the London cast album, because of the vitality and enthusiasm of the NY cast. Remember that cast albums used to be recorded on the first Sunday after the opening, when everyone was fresh. This was, of course, before Sunday matinees.
SOUTH PACIFIC (OBC) because of Mary Martin and the great Ezio Pinza.
CAROUSEL(1966 Lincoln Center Revival, supervised by Richard Rodgers, because of John Raitt. The sound is better than the OBC album.
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (OBC) because of the enthusiasm that comes through.
SHOWBOAT(1988 Studio Cast recording, conducted by John McGlinn). Grab this one.
THE MOST HAPPY FELLA (OBC-Complete Recording on 2 CD's) Arguably the finest score of ANY Broadway Musical.

Of the lesser-known shows, I think Goldilocks ranks the highest. I was obsessed the first time I heard it.

I agree with Mr. Matt about GOLDILOCKS which I was lucky enough to see twice back in 1958. It is still available on Amazon.
Let me add LI'L ABNER (OBC) from 1956. A great score, conducted by Lehman Engel.

As for revivals with better recordings than the original, I far prefer the '98 Cabaret and the '09 Hair to the original recordings.

I think the west side story revival soundtrack sounds pretty good.

specificlly, I like
"Touch me" and "guilty ones" from spring awakening
"Colors of the wind" pochohonos
"Aquarius" (revival) hair
"Baltimore Crabs" hairspray
"The way back" Jekyll and hyde (AMAZING)
"Gesthesmane" jesus christ superstar
"bring him home" les miserables (gary morris)

everything michael crawford sings in the london cast recording of phantom of the opera is WAY better than buttface.

as far as wicked goes - EW. too much dialogue. I always skip Wicked when i come across it on pandora.

Also, I have to include a link of a LEGENDARY recording

I think COMPANY (1970- Columbia) is excellent. Maybe the best cast album ever? And both SUNDAY IN THE PARK... ('84- RCA) and SWEENEY TODD ('79- RCA) which are shows where dialogue and songs interweave constantly are just wonderfully put together. (Since this is coming across as a Sondheim info-mertial, Happy Birthday Steve!)

Also a big fan of the MAME (1966- Columbia) album. Those might be my top 4 favorite cast albums. I'm sure I'm missing others.

In no particular order:

*OBC Company
*1987 Anything Goes
*OBC Gypsy
*OBC Mame
*1992 Guys and Dolls
*OBC Oklahoma
*OBC How To Succeed (Robert Morse is simply remarkable here)

If you want a completely random two, that is spectacular:

* 2002 The Last Five Years
* 1981 March of the Falsettos

Sweeney Todd - 1979 OBC
Gypsy - 1959 OBC
The Most Happy Fella - 1956 OBC
Fiorello! - 1959 OBC
Caroline, or Change - 2004 OBC
Juno - 1959 OBC
South Pacific - 1949 OBC
Company - 1970 OBC
Mame - 1966 OBC
Titanic - 1997 OBC
Pacific Overtures - 2005 Revival
Ragtime - 1998 OBC

Some of these shows are of more interest to historians than fans, but every one contains a score that I think is exceptional and these are the best available versions.

I would second House of Flower - OBC. It's really lovely recording.
and Caroline, or Change - OBC.

I'd also add
Floyd Collins - OCR
Merrily We Roll Along - OBC
Gypsy - Angela Lansbury London Cast Recording
Porgy and Bess - Houston Grand Opera
Candide - OBC

I also really enjoyed the Live Sweeney Todd/NY Phil recording with George Hearn and Patti Lupone.

And one more thing, many libraries have Lps as well, there is a WONDERFUL recording of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? - OBC. Many libraries have it, you can usually find out out on their site.

"Best cast recordings of All Time" is impossible to say because so many haven't been recorded as yet.

But ..to revive an old thread, back in 2005 I made a list of what I considered to be eseential recordings/scores and this list would be worth cross-checking with your library's holdings:

http://broadwayworld.com/board/readmessage.php?thread=863740#4066818

I should probably update the list covering shows of the last decade.

Enjoy!

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

The original off-Broadway recording of Little Shop of Horrors is personally one of my favorites, even if the score isn't entirely captured and the voices can be very echo-y. But what's there has yet to be beaten, in my opinion.
