Yes, Audra was out for all 8 shows, so I would imagine that explains the Porgy numbers. Also Phillip Boykin missed a couple last week I am told, as well as NaTasha Williams.
I have to admit I'm really surprised with the EVITA gross for just 6 shows. Happy it is selling so well so early - I just didn't think it would have that effect so soon.
While the movie certainly helps the recognition to some extent for Evita, it's not as if it's some unknown entity without it. The original production was a huge hit and the show has had a remarkable life since on all levels, from tours to regional to college to community theatre productions and every other level you can think of in between.
And the producers must certainly be thrilled. To hit 96% of your gross potential during the first week of previews is certainly a very good accomplishment. Hopefully they can sustain that momentum and finally give the Marquis a financial hit.
Those numbers are incredibly good for Evita but I wonder how long it can sustain it. There are still a lot of empty seats for performances throughout most of April. Perhaps if word of mouth is positive and reviews are good, the momentum can continue but the Marquis is a huge theatre and ticket prices are very high.
Godspell is also very popular for regional productions, college, high schools, etc. but its grosses are abysmal in comparison. I really think Ricky Martin is a bigger draw than many here - myself included - anticipated (he's probably the biggest "star" in a new musical this season) and that Evita's popularity stretches beyond regional productions. The score is very well known and the movie certainly contributes to its popularity.
I think Priscilla and Sister Act have hung around simply because there's no new show that could replace them, given that both the Palace and the Broadway are big theatres, I reckon Annie could go to the Palace but I imagine the producers would want the Neil Simon, Richard Rodgers or the Lunt Fontanne rather a barn like the Palace.
