What’s with all the young gay males committing suicide in the last few weeks? Is it that support systems at colleges in America are breaking down or is it all just a coincidence? It is being reported that Wednesday, September 29th, 19 year old Raymond Chase committed suicide via a hanging in his dorm room. The Sophomore at Johnson & Wales seemed happy, but clearly there was more going on inside than he showed outside. Full Story

"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
It's sad to say that there have been TWO others after Raymond Chase. Here's a list:

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I was thinking this morning, we are now hearing about all of these young men taking their own lives, I wonder if this is happening also with young gay women. If so, are we just not hearing about them because the focus is on all of these young men. And how many have we lost that we don't know about?
Men are statistically more likely to go through with a suicide attempt than women are, which may account for the fact we don't hear about young gay females killing themselves very often (the discrepancy between male and female suicide is actually quite high, with some reports suggesting there's a 10:1 ratio).

My younger brother goes to an all-boys Catholic high school, and he has a teacher that's a member of the clergy. I always thought he was a sweet old man. Two days ago my brother came home and told me the guy called somebody a faggot. I have absolutely no tolerance for bullying, but I'm starting to wonder if the adults are really the ones to blame here.

I can't help but wonder if there are actually more gay suicides lately or if only seems as such because the media is finally calling attention to them.

There are approximately 10 suicides by male teens per day in the US. The number who are gay is hard to ascertain, but I've seen 30% used a lot as an estimate.

You've got to be taught To hate and fear, You've got to be taught From year to year, It's got to be drummed In your dear little ear You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught to be afraid Of people whose eyes are oddly made, And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade, You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught before it's too late, Before you are six or seven or eight, To hate all the people your relatives hate, You've got to be carefully taught!
