so i took a little time and added up everyones favorites so far for the top awards at the Tony's. I used the comments from this board and the others floating around on BWW and other sites/blogs. Here are the most favored at this time (I know the Tony's aren't a popularity award but, it's interesting to see who people are liking) I'll try to update it and keep it current when possible.

what about catherine? does she have a chance? i haven't seen 'Night Music' so i don't know how she is live and in person. maybe the same issue as Julia Roberts on a Broadway stage?
I don't really think CZJ deserves a Tony. I thought she was good, but certainly not delivering a Tony-worthy performance. I know there are posters who disagree with me, though.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

John stamos over the Fela guy? I've heard nothing but wonderful things about him?
It was sarcasm. Neither Stamos nor Gershon stand a chance at being nominated, much less winning.
Jones will win unless Chenoweth pulls a rabbit out of her hat and blows everyone away in Promises Promises. And she's certainly capable of doing it. I wouldn't count out Chenoweth just yet.
The only "safe" bet right now is Angela Lansbury deservedly winning her 6th Tony.
It's kind of a weak year for actresses in a musical. Bebe Neuwirth is clearly not going to win. Barbara Cook is absolutely lovely in Sondheim on Sondheim, but I don't think she deserves to win. We just need to see how Kristin fares, and if she is great, it will be a battle between she and Zeta-Jones. I assume the fifth nominee will be either Noll, Baldwin, or Williams (if they keep her in leading). Updated On: 3/21/10 at 02:22 AM
My view on the Best Actress in a Musical category is that no one else has a role as good as Desiree. So even though I don't think Zeta-Jones is giving a great performance, she has more to work with than most of the other potential nominees.

sorry to miss your sarcasm. it will be my first trip to NYC next week, with my boyfriend and I want to be sure to see the best shows and get my money's worth. been a big fan of musicals and seen many tours that come through atlanta. what else is worth seeing?
It's sad reading these responses, because they reflect what a very anemic year this has been for musicals. That said, I wouldn't write off the leads in MEMPHIS, at least not as nominees. And in a season that has been perhaps the gayest in NY theatre history, I wouldn't write off LA CAGE, either.
There seems to be a legitimate contest in the Best Actor category, with both Christopher Walken and Alfred Molina giving the kind of performances the Tonys ought to be about, and several other actors (Shaloub, Schreiber, James, Spader, Garber, Craig, Law) giving worthy performances as well. You could say there is a contest of sorts between Valerie Harper's grand work in LOOPED and Laura Linney's more natural approach in TIME STANDS STILL. It has been a much more impressive year for plays than for musicals all around. Updated On: 3/21/10 at 07:07 AM
American Idiot has great buzz going into it. I feel like that is going to be this year's big hit a la Spring Awakening. It's the musical I'm most looking forward to.
Next Fall is also worth seeing. While I don't think it was as good as some other folks here, the performances are excellent, and It has really stayed with me.
Other plays that I recommend Race,God Of Carnage (the new cast is terrific), and Our Town (which was one of the best plays I have ever seen).
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
I really REALLY want to see some of the Ragtime cast members at least get recognized for their roles. Unfortunately though, they'll most likely be forgotten about during the voting.
