JBM2 - Jack Hughes was making a joke. KLG didn't actually say any of that. He was just supposing what she *would* say. Pretty obviously tongue firmly in cheek.
I know my question isn't pleasant BUT will this show still be running on Saturday evening or will the critics have shut it down by the end of the week? I'm just asking, as I've planned to see it on that day AND I've paid full price (I bought the ticket ages ago....and I could kick myself!!!) and judging by the things that are being written on this board, it's clear that this show is not doing well and I thought that maybe I should make a change of plans...
Whoa, those lyrics are awful. KLG is always chirping on The Today Show how all songs have to rhyme. So when Hoda Kotb plays a song she likes (as she does every show), KLG chimes in with "It doesn't even rhyme!" She is really an amateur writer if she thinks so simply.
I'm thinking Jordan Catalano made those lyrics up. But if he did, they certainly aren't any worse than KLG's own. She rarely gets beyond the quality of moon, June, spoon. Seriously! Sorry to say it, but the lyrics and book of Scandalous are extremely amateur.
Ha, well they made me laugh anyway. Hysterical with the moon, June, spoon...yikes. I could tell she was a terrible lyricist just by the way she was critiquing the "non-rhyming" lyrics on The Today Show (some of which were from Billy Joel songs!)
I wouldn't be surprised if the 4Square Church and Miss Gifford continued to pump money into this turkey and run it as long as possible. It's clearly a vanity project.
It was eons better than Women on the Verge (really) and Leap of Faith and that godawful On A Clear Day revival. Women on the Verge was truly embarasing to watch in spite of its cast. Aimee Semple's life is a fascinating one and I think they told the story well. I wasn't bored for a second during this musical. I'll give you the songs were on the bombastic side but there is a lot of merit there.. David Friedman is a great composer.... listen to "Rich Famous and Powerful" or "Listen to my heart." Perhaps I was so ready to see a Godawful show based on the comments here. In fact, I went with a lot trepidation. My expectations were so low that I was pleasantly surprised. You can go after Gifford's rhyming schemes if you want but aren't you being incredibly nit picky? It is no secret that some of the press will have it out for Gifford as some of you do. I just don't see what is so bad about this musical. Would you hate it as much if Gifford's name weren't attached? This is the snarkiest board I have ever seen on here.

That's truly sad, but if you read the rest of this threat, you'll see that many people have tried to tell you. Perhaps you aren't listening?

Oh, most definitely YES. It's just awful, awful writing. And the directing and choreography are bottom of the barrel, too. The poor actors, Lord love 'em, are working like elephants to try to bring this steaming pile some semblance of life.

I will admit, I am not a KLG fan as a performer, as a person I am certain she is wonderful, kind, generous to a fault in incredibly funny, although I have never met her. I cannot stand other performers as people but I admire their work and have no problem praising it, but I do not admire KLG as an entertainer, I find her boring and pedestrian at best. If this show were of a certain standard, I would be the first to say, "Go see it, despite your misgivings and hooray for KLG.", but it is not, and that is an honest assessment. I wish every single show that appears on broadway works and is of an excellent quality, but that just isn't reality. They have made mistakes with this production, and in the direction, and in the choreography, and in the actual music itself. Whether it is the fault of the director, or producers or the entire creative team, I am not privy to that information, but the result on the stage is proof of the shows lameness and lack of merit. I personally thought it was a good subject to base a musical or play upon - they just haven't provided the quality of music, lyrics, book and direction and choreography to make it so. Only one opinion here. Others may just absolutely love it, and if they do and if the show continues - great, that means people are entertained and people have jobs. I fear this will not be the case, even if I ask the Gods to make it so.
I do watch her and Hoda and Hoda nmow seems more excited about the show than Kathy Lee. Kind of sad to watch. You can kind of tell that she knows what is coming as far as reviews arw concerened. That has to hurt when you have put your heart and soul into something.
Well i have to say the more you trash it.. the easier it is to like. I had NO expecations going in thanks largely to this board. None. And I was pleasantly surprised.Conversely, the praise on here for Bonnie and Clyde was enthusiastic (as I was) and look what happen to that. Pretty bad critical drubbing because of the anti Frank Wildhorn factor and the expectations raised here.
And just because someone tells me not to like something is not a reason not to like it. It doesn't mean I don't listen; it means I don't agree. I heard what people have to say and for the most part I don't agree. I have my own opinion. I enjoyed the show. Scandalous to me was a fascinating piece of Americana as was Bonnie And Clyde.
I think Carolee's performance is worth the price of admission as well as was Rob McClure's in Chaplin. I didn't like Chaplin overall. I found it dull and tried to cover too many years in Chaplin's life but I do admire the performance of Mr. McClure, the opening number and Jenn Collella as Hedda Hopper.
Are you the judge of David Friedman and David Pemeranz's talent? Saying they have none is just ludicrous. One need to only listen to "Listen to My Heart" or "Rich Famous and Powerful." to know that Friedman has talent to spare.
And you are correct ---Women on the Verge, Leap of Faith (with some good songs) and On a Clear Day were largely crap.
And as for snarky. I have been around these boards with regularity and this seems to be the bottom of the snarky barrel. I'm certain at times I've been on the snarky bandwagon. This is just not one of them.
This is an original musical. We will see nothing but revivals and juke box musicals if you just relish in this bashing prior to a show's opening. There has to be a gestation period. The show is making changes and what you saw in October is not what you will see opening night.
And of course now I will be called a "shill' because that's what happens when you like something. You just want everyone to agree with you and when they don't... this is what happens.
I saw the show this weekend, after it was frozen, and enjoyed it. I get that the stairs are on stage the whole time because there is officially a single setting: the Angeles Temple. The audience is being treated like the congregation, form whom Aimee begins recounting the stories-- kind of like I guess Aimee Semple McPherson did in real life by staging performances to tell stories. As for the comments about Carolee Carmello's voice as a 17 year old, I didn't mind it. To me it was more of an effective way to demonstrate she IS portraying a younger person. She lost the high tone of her voice pretty quickly, so I don't know if she has cut back on it or not compared to what others saw.
I'm puzzled about the comment about the word "scandalous" being over-used, because it was used ONCE when I saw it, and the word "scandal" was only used once time as well (I thought it would be much more than that, because I'd been reading the boards before I saw the show!) There are some cheesy play-on-words, but they got good laughs. ("Some Christians are so pious, they just pious me off!") I could listen to Carolee Carmello sing "For Such a Time as This" again and again... and have thanks to YouTube.
So, I agree with goldenboy: I was pleasantly surprised as well, and definitely enjoyed the show :)
I would just like to say that to the people here who actually liked Scandalous, that no one is putting you down for doing so. There is a general consensus here that the show is not good. But that doesn't mean that anyone here is saying that no one could possibly like it. There are a couple of you here who do. That's what makes the world go 'round!
