I think I would have preferred Steve Carell as Vanya in VANYA & SONIA & MASHA & SPIKE. He's not bad here. But better suited for Durang.

I was surprised to see some of the comments about Anika Noni Rose. I found her absolutely luminous as Yelena (and was shocked to learn she's an ageless 51). It almost felt like Schreck wanted to make an adaptation about Yelena (or Yelena + Sonya, which is often how the play feels), which might have been more interesting.

Was on the fence about seeing this one on my trip next week, but was able to snag LincTix for opening night - Super excited, I've never been to an opening night before!

Wow, I wish I had felt that way. We felt Yelena was completely lacking in this adaptation and that was an important part of the play that was missing. We had no reason to care in those scenes that should have been hugely important.

This production really didn't work for me, and a couple of days after seeing it, I finally put my finger on why.

Steve Carell is giving a performance that showcases how impressive he is as comedic performer but is not actually servicing the story. From the first moments where he stumbles onstage, all of Vanya's jealously, loathing, and sexual frustration are already dialed up to at least a 9.

There's no arc to Carell's performance, this Vanya is explosively angry enough for his climactic conflict with the professor before the story gets him there.

This was surprisingly bad considering everyone involved and I could not wait for it to end (a lot of people left after act one)

Carell is miscast, I think he could have been a brilliant Vanya with a director who was strong enough to break him away from doing his Michael Scott schtick. Jayne Houdyshell is absolutely wasted in this and it is truly confusing how William Jackson Harper ended up with a TONY nomination

also it is IMPOSSIBLE to tell when this production is taking place, now,the 60s?

Another real misfire from Lincoln Center
