JLZ has it right. For a supposed sex symbol he and his movies have been devoid of sexuality despite what the press had tried to peddle for years. His "romances" have been twisted (Eyes Wide Shut), icy (Far and Away) or somehow tacked on, clumsy and Hollywood formula (Days of Thuder, Jerry Maguire, Knight and Day etc.). His sex appeal in the movies? Fraudulent (Magnolia) or comical (cRock of MarriAges). He isn't a sexy man like Denzel or Brad, who have natural charisma, without a need to a employ a wheezy plot device to convince an audience he's sexy. He's an aging pretty boy who made studios money, so Hollywood is going along with the illusion. As long as he can come up with a Mission Impossible movie now and again.
That character in Magnolia had fraudulent sex appeal on purpose, as I doubt PTA wanted "respect the cock!" to be the new "you complete me". Sarah Vowell had a good theory that the Frank TJ Mackey character in Magnolia was the perfect role because of the nervous, aggressive energy he gives and that it was interesting because it was possibly the closest we ever saw him really get his hands dirty acting.
When Katie married Tom after the "interview" process, she was clearly enamored with a "movie star" who liked her. The bloom is clearly off the rose. She won't be getting as much bank as one might think, as it is all contracted based on years and number of children. She's going to have to get her acting career back on track.
Oh, and she can never speak about the marriage or write a book, also based on the contract. So there goes the tell all interviews and bios.
She has something Cruise will want- Suri. A prenup can't be the exclusive determiner in a custody case, any court will look at the individual circumstances and operate in the minor child's best interest. Just the child support alone ( no change in the present standard of living) will give Ms Holmes a nice bit of chedder, for at least the next 10- 12 yrs UNLESS Suri herself at an age her opinions are sought for, requests that she be placed w her father. ( the fingers of Scientology reach out...Mimi Rogers has a LOT to answer for!)
Tony Ortega, longtime Scientology critic and Village Voice editor who really knows the arcane minutia of the organization, says he believes the notion of "the contract" is spurious, that it became an urban legend after word got out about the non-disclosure agreements the group made would be dates of Cruise sign.
He also has a good take on why Katie might have had enough, apparently Suri at age 6 is now vulnerable to "security checks" in which kids are grilled by church authority about everything, including the activities of their parents. Surigate
I guess I always assumed people were using "the contract" and the pre-nup interchangeably. I'm sure there is no way in hell that marriage took place without a pre-nup, but is the mysterious "contract" that people refer to a separate document?
I think the urban legend is that there were auditions for the part of Tom Cruise's wife and that "the contract" had a beginning and end date. Ortega thinks this is specious, although he seems to believe the organization vetted possible dates for Cruise with several types of non-disclosure documents and the pre-nup.
The Nicole divorce gave birth to the contract theory and ScarJo said something about having an impersonal run-in with Cruise and his Scientology entourage almost trying to recruit her and since she was in that audition rumor that may be tied to her experience.
