Enjoyed it, made a a lot of wonderful creative choices that stood out from anything i have seen this season (in terms of tech etc), the fact it was snubbed was a total joke, hopefully UK producers/writers etc will keep Matilda away from Broadway since i would hate to see the same happen to that.

Never understood when it became wrong to watch and enjoy shows that are designed for you to enjoy.

People coming here ARE looking for opinions, as are the folks that I MIGHT make a reccommendation to. I'm not better than anyone because I have a different opinion, but my opinion is valid. I've certainly been able to tell people that I might not have enjoyed something, but based on their tastes their would.

Frankly, if I was going to the theater and I was stuck between a show that no one liked, and one that others did, I'd rather see the one that people are praising. Certainly, there's no guarantee that I'm going to like it, or that I wouldn't have liked the lesser appreciated show -- but you make educated guesses to which one you might enjoy more.

I never wanted to see Rock of Ages. It sounded like a show I would dislike (for a lot of reasons) I didn't go see it for the longest time. I finally went and saw it with my sister (as I thought she WOULD like it) I hated all but about the first 2 minutes. The comments I saw/heard gave me accurate information -- because I'm intelligent and can figure out how that info works for me.

It's not like anyone here is stopping strangers in line for tix telling them NOT to buy a ticket. No one person -- or even the slew of us here have the powere to make a show succeed or fail. But what we can do is give out the information as we see it. I think you could take the overwhelming majority of the posts here on BWW and assume the words IN MY OPINION exist.

That idiotic argument, "If you say you hate a show, you're asking to put 100s of people out of work," keeps getting smacked across its stupid face over and over again.

The most recent refutation was that complaining about the loss of a job when a show closes is like a flight attendant complaining about how much they have to travel - it's part of the job. No show, not even Cats, lasts forever. Every show will close, every theatre worker will have to find the next assignment; if you don't like that fact, don't choose the theatre for your career.

It's so eminently possible to acknowledge that a show is a piece of garbage without saying that everyone associated with it should be thrown out on the streets like the Little Match Girl.

Sadly, the same moronic sentimentalists will continue to shriek out the opposing fallacious thesis.

The boo-hooing about shows closing is Utter BS. As someone who has worked on several Bway shows, some short runs, some long runs, it's the biz, If you don't like it, you get out, many have.
At most times, most Bway theatres are in use, so all the people who could be working are working.

Objective?? Theatre Versus Restaurants????
I think there is a correlation.

:

All of the above are equivilient to
food that is undercooked ( a score that is underdeveloped)
food that is bland ( too many power ballads that all sound the same)
too much money spent on the decor of a restauant (set and video effects) while the meal itself (show) is substandard.
service that is not very good (problems with casting, choreography and music)
A bad item on the menu (miscast leading lady who can sing but has a "bitchy quality making her unsuitable for the part of Molly)
A great and unexpected side dish ( D'avine Joy Randolph as Oda Mae)
A Brand Name with nothing behind it (Ghost? Olive Garden, insert bad chain here)
food that is over priced. (!50 per ticket)

while I can go down the street and
get better bang for my buck......
Book of Mormon
Wicked
How to Succeed
Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Lion King
etc.

I'm with Dramamamma here. I think it's fine to say a show is garbage, and to think that if you insult a show you disliked as such, you're putting hundreds out of work is not even a valid discussion topic. I *do* think some people--on either side of the debate, seem to forget that what someone says about a show, including themselves *is* just their *opinion*, and that gets amplified when they discuss on a forum.

I'd rather see GHOST 100 more times than sit through ONCE again. I only compare the two because they're both love stories adapted from popular movies, and are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to critical reception. I'll take a visually creative and imagined, well-performed piece of audience-pleasing fluff like GHOST over an insufferable, overrated and pretentious piece of crap like ONCE any day. With GHOST, I feel I got my money's worth. With ONCE, I feel like I was robbed of both my money and my time. But thems just my 2 cents.

I loved Once (I found it to BE visually creative and imagined) and your dislike of it doesn't cause me to enjoy it any less. I might enjoy a conversation about our differences, but you are no more right than am I.

"I might enjoy a conversation about our differences, but you are no more right than am I."

dramamama...I wasn't addressing my comments at you, or anyone else, directly. And I'm not trying to make you wrong, or say that your opinion is any less valid than mine. I was just giving my take on the two shows. Like I said, "thems just my 2 cents." Why so defensive?

I think the absurdity I've always found in these discussions is the notion that people want a show to close they don't like to make room for a better show to open.

1. That particular show doesn't have to close for another show to open. Mamma Mia, The Lion King, Memphis, Phantom of the Opera and others have run for years, yet new shows always manage to open.

2. The new show may not be any better. In fact, it could be a lot worse.

Disliking a show is a valid opinion. Making a point that you want it to close is just the need to be bitchy. Sort of like homophobes wanting to end gay marriage. If it's already happening and it has no impact on your life, why do you care? Wishing a show would close is pretty fruitless if there is an obvious demand from the public to still see it. When the public loses interest, tickets sales will drop off and it will close.

Of course what is posted here are only opinions, although some posters don't understand that, but it seems to me that when someone loves a show, and wants to share their excitement, they are called shills, or at least there's doubt about their sincerity.

The haters come barreling through with intense force, insulting the lovers, and tend to dominate the discussion. Their hate seems stronger than the topic warrants.

This is the way I perceive the threads about shows in general.

I didn't mean to sound defensive -- I was just trying to show that not everyone needs to BE defensive when someone's opinion differs from their own. (I guess I failed at that.)

It's just as easy to see people who love a certain show as being defensive, arrogant, antagonistic - the same qualities those lovers say they see in everyone who disagrees with them.

I agree with newintown. Even the words so often used--"bash," "haters"--make it clear that the lovers of shows aren't much interested in hearing differeing opinions.

Jane, I think you're right that often people rush to call supporters "shills," but usually that's just for first-time posters (though even then it's arguably unfair).
