Thoughts on Music Themed Academy Awards

Yeah but why those two? Why not a montage of ALL the Oscar winning musicals? Or at least a mention of the fact that these three musicals aren't the only ones ever made.

Hmmm I got an idea.
No good can possibly come from using this vast wasteland of error and deliberate deceit. You should get off of it and warn others away. You should make sure your children and grandchildren know what a corrupt and morally bankrupt institution it truly is.

Because they did a few years ago and it was awful.
"Hi there, we represent The Broadway Better Business Players for a Better Tomorrow. We're trying to start a petition to get second rate shows taken off the marquee and with your help we can stop Mamma Mia from ever playing again." -Brad Jones in Suburban Knights

"Is it true you have Ralph Jr at the bottom of your purse in a jar of formaldehyde?" - Felicia
"No, but I wish I did so I could shove it down your throat!" - Bernadette

"This play is sh*t! This play is sh*t! F*CK YOU TERRENCE MCNALLY!!"- Patti LuPone as an angry theatre goer at 'Master Class'

You have one thing right "Broadway star" (and if that name isn't a joke, I don't know what is) you are SORRY! A sorry excuse for just about anything.

I get that they made this a tribute to the past Oscar-winning musicals of the last ten years, but they could have expanded it to include other musicals from the past year. Kate Hudson with "Cinema Italiano," Meryl Streep with "Mamma Mia," even Johnny Depp with something from "Sweeney Todd." At least freaking "You Can't Stop The Beat."

Or they could have done a tribute to all of the winning musicals, with performances from "West Side Story," "Sound of Music," "My Fair Lady," and "Oliver."

^ I was wondering about that too. It was a musical theme but why those 2 only. And those certainly weren't the only winning musicals. I think its bec Chicago was produced by the current producers of the Oscars (they had to insert that in the production) (?).

So am I the only one who thought it was odd that the whole theme was about how "big" movie musicals are back "in" when there was only one musical nominated for anything and it hardly won anything?

It seemed it would have been more logical if the theme was about being dysfunctional. Now that's what's BIG in movies these days.

Does anyone know who was responsible for the opening and closing numbers, music and lyrics? It'd be nice to know whom to blame...

It was a tribute to celebrate the greatest artistic triumphs in the genere of hollywood musicals of THIS century. Besides Les Mis, Chicago and Dreamgirls were the most praised Oscar winning musical films. Coincidentally all three films won the same Oscar, best supporting actress. I was really hoping that it won best picture too but there are dreams that cannot be... At least it won three, which is the same number of awards the best picture took home, so overall I think that it did very well considering the race was very close this year.

In regards to the show being overall "awful" clearly the person who wrote that doesn't appreciate musical theater or talent.

I loved the closing number.

@JoeKV99-I totally agree! That's what I thought they would do! I think they should've done that AND a few performances. I thought at the beginning it was funny but then it became stupid & boring so I wish that they did more performances! Then I wouldn't be so bored!
