exactly Gaveston. And it is not a song intended to propel plot, but displays the cross-pollination of black and white cultures (unneeded) in the context of radio song.

You know life goes on... Until it doesn't.
There are few finalities in life.. except death.
Ending a musical with people realizing they love(d) eachother and moving on is a perfect reflection of life.
We do that eery do.
In life.. there are few happy ever afters.
It was actually a perfect ending in my humble opinion.

Sorry for the bump but saw the show a little while and wanted to add my two cents. I too kind of thought it implied they might try to start again, especially with Delray's line about "I really hate her new fiance." And maybe I've watched too many TV dramas but did anyone else think they were setting up Felicia having Huey's child? Not after the show was over, I mean, but did anyone else who hadn't seen the show before think that was going to be some reveal at the end, since there was that whole conversation when he proposed about "how're we gonna have a baby?" Anyways, I liked the show as a whole. Not the greatest piece of theater I've ever seen but genuinely entertaining and the two leads on the tour, Bryan Fenkhart and Felicia Boswell, are wonderful.

With respect, bwayrose7, I do think your point of view may be skewed by TV. TV serials have to keep recycling relationships because dozens if not hundreds of episodes have to involve the same handful of characters.

Theater and films normally tell one story in one two-hour period and the convention of star-crossed lovers meeting to somehow say good-bye in the final scene appears not just in MEMPHIS and THE WAY WE WERE, but in CAMELOT and FUNNY GIRL.

The protagonists of MEMPHIS are no more getting back together than Fanny Brice and Nicky Arnstein.

Fair enough, and no offense taken :) Definitely very different mediums with very different conventions. Heaven knows I've seen the same plots recycled time and again on TV! Still, Memphis was a thoroughly enjoyable show- much better than I expected after reading some comments.

If im not mistaken wasn't there a line in the show where Delray says "She can't have children because of you"?

I only saw the show once and it was a while ago now, but I thought it was implied that the last time Felicia was beaten, she was beaten so badly she couldn't have children, and possibly lost Huey's that she was carrying.

Preach!

Yeah... the ending is bittersweet because it is made abundantly clear that they can never ever ever get back together. Huey can only be happy in the success that Felicia has, knowing that he is a small part of it.

^^^What DEClarke wrote. I'd only add that the ending was one of the few genuinely moving moments in the show. For me.
