Barbra Streisand Considering Casting Lady Gaga in GYPSY Film!

I heard a rumor about Mel Gibson as Herbie. Hmmmm...

As for Lady Gaga, she looks much more appropriate when out of her performance makeup. It might work. We need to see her act first, though.

Look on the bright side, at least we won't get Lea Michele.

The Gaga or Perry (the better body for it) would be great for marketing and getting the kids in the seats.
But is Bab's Ego ready for either of them on the same screen?

Hanks would be perfection.
No rumors for the Strippers?
I'd die for Cher's Mazeppa. It's right in her vocal range.

I think Barbra is still a little old for Rose, but I think in this case, the most age-appropriate choice for Louise would be Natalie Portman. I think Anna Kendrick would be a great June. Lea Michele could be a good Lousie with a sting director. Is Babs directing?

Pop stars could make cute cames as the strippers: imagine Gaga, Britney, and Katy Perry as the strippers.

And, totally random, but if it was more about making a film of "Gypsy" than a Barbra vehicle, I feel like Madonna would be a brilliant Rose.

But Madonna's a lousy actress. She might be ok as one of the strippers.

Unfortunately if Streisand is directing it, it will never happen. her projects sit for years. I do think lady gaga would be an excellent choice. Lady Gaga runs with the new york burlesque scene for YEARS. It's also not like she hasn't had any training. she did major in musical at the Tisch school at nyu before she started doing her performance art pop shows in the clubs on the lower east side.

with all that said. I won't hold my breath for Bab's to get this done.

Haven't you guys seen pictures of the real Gypsy Rose Lee? Lady Gaga absolutely has the same facial look-- a very 40's idea of beauty, a la Celeste Holme or Barbara Stanwyk-- a knowing broad with a twinkle in her eye. Gypsy should never really be a cute girl when she gets to the stripping phase-- adorable Natalie Wood has clouded people's judgment for too long.

I think someone like Gaga is the only way for the movie to have a chance of selling enough tickets to warrant the cost of production.

I mean, teenaged boys (the staple of the movie box office) are not exactly pining away to see Barbra Streisand as Mama Rose in a movie based on a 1959 Broadway musical. (They're probably not pining away to see Gaga as Gypsy Rose Lee, either. Only the gays want to see that.)

Outside of theatre queens and Streisand fans, who exactly wants to see this movie? Gypsy has already been made into a movie (1962), a made-for-TV movie (Bette Midler, 1993), and been on Broadway three times since 1989 (Tyne Daley, Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone).

Gaga seems like a ploy to build excitement and get financing. But the whole idea sounds questionable.

Christina, Pink and L'il Kim as the strippers (a la Lady Marmalade from Moulin Rouge).

I agree. This film will quietly be put in turnaround and will never be heard of again. I love how they are now using the term "rights issues".

Mary Tyler Moore had a sitcom in the early 1990s that CBS put on "hiatus" after only a few episodes. It never returned. As one CBS exec at the time put it, "You don't cancel Mary Tyler Moore."

I think it would be fantastic casting.

It makes a lot more sense than Carrie Underwood as Maria, anyway.

Is Mickey Rooney young enough to be believable as Barbra's father, or are they going to have to get the Cryptkeeper?
