From the best news ever department: Wes Anderson wants Angela Lansbury for his next movie

Indeed, it was 'one more great film role'.
Gaslight, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Harvey Girls, State of the Union, The Long, Hot Summer, The Dark at the Top of the Stairs, All Fall Down, The World of Henry Orient, Something for Everyone, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Death on the Nile and most notably The Manchurian Candidate were all great achievements.

I always get into arguments about how old the character is supposed to be, but the great late career role I wanted for Lansbury would have been Violet Weston.

That reminds me, why the f isn't Dark at the Top of the Stairs on DVD yet--surely it could at least be released as one of those DVD on demand releases.

Well, Depp is officially on board, hopefully Ms. Lansbury agrees to join as well:

Johnny Depp to Star in Wes Anderson's Next Film

The project comes from Indian Paintbrush, which will produce and finance.

Johnny Depp will team with the iconic Wes Anderson for his next project.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the Lone Ranger actor will star in Andersons next film, which he wrote and will direct, and is being produced and financed by Indian Paintbrush. No details regarding the films plot or Depps character have been revealed yet, but the project is said to be titled The Grand Budapest Hotel and will mark the filmmakers first time shooting in Europe.

Fans at Comic-Con were wowed last weekend during the Disney Panel, where footage of Depp in The Lone Ranger was screened for a packed Hall H. As for Anderson, his Moonrise Kingdom premiered to rave reviews at Cannes earlier this year. With a wide release on June 29, Moonrise Kingdom has thus far grossed an impressive $44.7 million at the worldwide box office.

While Depp is the first to sign on for Budapest, Anderson is said to be courting Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Edward Norton, Jude Law, Jeff Goldblum, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe and Angela Lansbury for the film, as well.

Lansbury also says her role is "minuscule" and "less than five minutes."

"Woman of mystery" sounds juicy, but it's probably not that one more great film role she's pining for.

It may not be a "great" film role, but generally cameos in Wes Anderson films are really, really memorable and fun.

Beatrice Straight won an Oscar for her just under 6 minutes of screentime in Network.

Of course it too bad that the role is just a cameo and it certainly won't win her an Oscar or even bring 4th nomination, but I'm so glad she'll be in another film and not just any film, but Wes freaking Anderson's film. Can't wait.

Hey, it ain't impossible!

I'm just saying, I'd be surprised if it ends up being that sort of thing.

It's obviously too early to tell, but if the film does well I can't imagine Margo Martindale failing to winning for August: Osage County next year.

Such a bummer :-/

From the earlier reports this was going to be a very small role so perhaps it was not going to be the great role Lansbury longed for anyway.

Still, it's better than nothing. Plus working with Wes Anderson hasn't hurt anybody.

True, it's watching the results that are excruciating.

Killers! Murderers! You liars! All of you liars! You're only happy when you can see something die! Why don't you kill yourselves to be happy! You and your God's country! Freedom! I pity you! You are three dear, sweet, dead men! Butchers! Murderers!

Why is everyone bailing from this picture? Script problems?
Will42

Im sure that the script is great and the film will be a big success. Ms. Lansbury had to withdraw because the filming was pushed back for month from December to mid-January. She cant do it so late, since the Australian production of Driving Miss Daisy starts on February, 5.
Depp also dropped out because of the timing.

The filming has already began in Berlin, but what is interesting that they didnt replace Ms. Lansbury with some other legendary 70+ actress, but rather with the super-awesome Tilda Swinton, who has already worked with Anderson in Moonrise Kingdom.

I know you shouldn't tamper with perfection--but would Harold and Maud fit in there somewhere for Ms Lansbury?
Just saying, and ever thought of with music?

Thank god for bumps! I had missed Stage Manager's jab back in October- I read it just now and almost choked on Elaine Stritch's poop!
