I'm quite hopeful that Peter and the Starcatcher will be nominated for Best Score. (I haven't seen One Man, Two Guvnors, but I've heard that the numbers in that show are funny. It could have a change in that category as well.)

i believe the "vocal issues" they are referring to are the 3 lines she does not belt in "Buenos Aires", but sings in her head voice.

Actually that's not what I meant at all. Apparently she has been having serious vocal trouble for the past week. Everyone I have talked to has said that her voice is shot.

With Kara Lindsay being placed in the Leading Actress category, does anyone think Melissa Van Der Schyff will squeeze into the Featured Actress group? I'd love to see it happen, thought she gave a truly wonderful performance in Bonnie & Clyde.

Cheers,
C.

Josh Young is featured, he was below the title.

Interesting about Martin...

I thought Kara Lindsay had a chance of winning the featured category. Now she has only a tiny shot at a nomination. It's too bad, I thought she was best in show. Melissa van der Schyff's chances of being remembered come Tuesday just increased. And good for her, I thought she was wonderful.

I am rooting for Peter and the Starcatcher's score to win a nomination. The music added so much to the play. I'd love to see them perform the mermaid number on the telecast! Wishful thinking, I know.

I want Alan Menken to win a Tony so bad. But it would just feel so wrong for him to win it for Newsies. It's definitely not his best work and in my opinion not deserving of the prize (if you're only considering the new material).

I disagree. NEWSIES, in my opinion, is one of (if not) his best. While the new material may be lacking in some areas, "Something to Believe In" and "Watch What Happens" are incredible additions to the already fantastic score. Just those two numbers alone are better than most of the other possible nominations (and yes, I realize two songs don't make a score, I'm just saying). Don't forget that also just about every one of the classic numbers received rewrites and even additions. For example, "Once For All" is almost a completely different song. In my opinion, the existing material has undergone so many changes (musically/lyrically/orchestrations) that it shouldn't make a difference as to the show "deserving" the award due to preexisting material. It does deserve it, and I have a good feeling it will win it. Brilliant all around.

I should say I've been a longtime fan of the music of Newsies. I do like "Watch What Happens," but "Something to Believe In" seemed like a generic pop ballad to me. You could have stuck it into Jekyll & Hyde or Bonnie & Clyde (sorry, I don't mean to pick on Wildhorn, but random power ballads are his thing). I don't remember any of the other new songs; they didn't resonate with me. I'm aware of all the changes that were made, but I don't think they're superior to the previous material. I just think it could have been better. (This is also my opinion of the musical itself; they didn't really improve on the movie like they could have. It's just thrilling to watch it live.)

I don't mind that it's not a completely original score. To me, the eligible material isn't the greatest. Then again, there have been far worse winners, like that winner from two years ago.

Newsies being nominated and possibly winning anything at the Tonys is a comeback both for Disney which had two flops in Tarzan and The Little Mermaid and also for Newsies which now has gained a new life as a successful stage musical, while it was a low risk transferring the show to Broadway, it has paid off.

I think we may see the scores from some plays be nominated over musicals this season. I could see Peter and the Starcatcher or One Man, Two Guvnors sneaking in over... well, pretty much everything but Newsies.

It's a shame that Once's score is ineligible. It's arguably the show's strongest asset, creative-wise. It'll probably grab Orchestrations, though.

The way I see it, NEWSIES' score (new and old) is finally getting the recognition it deserves, and in the medium it truly belongs in!

I've never seen the film but the stage version was a joy to watch from start to finish and it didn't rely on special effects or lavish sets or costumes unlike past Disney shows but rather the acting, dancing and the songs as well as a good story.

DISNEY has been playing it safe and smart (for once) with NRESIES. But now they may be getting greedy. I'd bet they put Kara and Ben (who has no chance) in leading so Carpathia and the adorable Andrew have a chance for Featured. The more nods the better.
They shouldn't worry, they will have a good TONY night compared th the last few.

Kara had a better chance of being nominated as Featured than Capathia. But I can see the Ben vs. Andrew idea (even though I think Andrew had a better chance as it was).

It would be nice to see Kara Lindsay nominated as well as Ben, Capathia and Andrew but it wouldn't surprise me if only Jeremy is nominated in the actor catergories. I agree that they'll have a good Tony night, possibly their best since The Lion King.

I agree Jonwo, they could have had 1 lock, 1 probable and 1 maybe(Andrew Crutchie Keenan Bolger) with Kara in featured.
I imagine Tommie Shoemaker printing t-shirts in his art and crafts room saying: SWEEP!

I'd nom Andrew for just about anything and the thought of the Bolger kids together on the red carpet is cuter than kittens.

You can bet they'll announce on Tony Night or the day after not only is Newsies an open ended run but also a National Tour.

If Newsies does win best musical, will it just be Tom Schumacher or will they invite the cast and creative. Usually it's an army of producers.

Is Christian Borle eligible for featured? He's below the title, I believe.

"Strange decision to put Kara Lindsay into leading. Now it's all down to Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Judy Kuhn for Featured Actress in a Musical."

That's Judy Kaye, Ilovejh.
