What about Legally Blonde. Does that have a chance?
Though, I'd say Curtains is a lock for score.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
wow, has the score from a play ever been nominated before?? That would be interesting. I thought the score was great, but it sounded too much like Harry Potter.
I agree: the four nominations will be Spring Awakening, Grey Gardens, Curtains and Legally Blonde. I think those will be the Best Musical nominations as well.

Wow, I think it would be ridiculous to include Utopia in the list. To me, a score has to do with the lyrics and actually singing. Updated On: 4/22/07 at 04:37 PM
While I didn't see COU, I would be extremely interested to see this happen.
"This table, he is over one hundred years old. If I could, I would take an old gramophone needle and run it along the surface of the wood. To hear the music of the voices. All that was said." - Doug Wright, I Am My Own Wife
If COU's music is THAT wonderful, I wouldn't mind seeing it take over Curtains' slot. Curtains' score I found functional, with the exceptions of "That-a-Way", "It's a Business", and "He Did It". Nothing really noteworthy about it.
"Sing the words, Patti!!!!" Stephen Sondheim to Patti LuPone.
Oh, I forgot about Fame Becomes Me. I wouldn't be suprised if that got it.

If anyone on the nominating committee appreciates great theater songs and is paying attention it might get one, but I doubt it.
Isn't that the point of the nominating committee? Of course, it doesn't always happen, but one would like to assume they at least appreciate great theatre and pay attention.

I would be VERY surprised if CURTAINS didn't get a nomination, regardless of whether you think the score is good or not, the committee will definitely give it a sentimental vote as a nod to Mr.Ebb and to honor one of the most memorable songwriting teams in Broadway history. The last time I remember the score of a play was nominated for the Best Score category was Jeanine Tesori's score for TWELFTH NIGHT in 1999, THE PILLOWMAN was eligible in the 2004-2005 season but didn't get a nod. It'd be pretty neat if COAST OF UTOPIA got a nod.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Though I doubt it will get a nod, "Coast of Utopia" did have an amazing musical score. And jg4892, "Coast" did have lyrics in many of its interludes, specifically in Part III, most (if not all) of which were in Italian and there was I believe one in French. If it did recieve a nomination, it would be more than deserving.
"Are you sorry for civilization? I am sorry for it too." ~Coast of Utopia: Shipwreck
Well then Tech, how did The Producers, Hairspray, Urinetown, Avenue Q, and The Drowsy Chaperone win for Best Score. They're all comedic scores.

Mark Bennett's score for UTOPIA is about to be released on CD this week and yes it will be eligible.
Jeanine Tesori's incidental music for the last Broadway revival of TWELFTH NIGHT was nominated for the Tony for Best Score in 1999.
That said, the nominating committee will probably go with musical to fill out the category. Maybe LEGALLY BLONDE?

That's easy! They had a lot less competition. There are several strong scores in the running this year, which is a good thing. Also, "Fame Becomes Me" wasn't the sort of big success that The Producers or Hairspray was, and might not even be considered an actual musical by some, even though that's clearly what it was.
"I have got to have some professional music!" - Big Edie
^That's true. But still, I don't think comedy always gets overlooked.

I think it'll probably depend on the trend of the nominations this season. If LOVEMUSIK gets the Best Musical nod and Best Book nominations over LEGALLY BLONDE (assuming the other three nominees are CURTAINS, SPRING AWAKENING, GREY GARDENS), and COAST OF UTOPIA gets a slew of nominations, then it'll probably get the Best Score nomination as well. Otherwise, it'd be safe to say that LEGALLY BLONDE will be getting that fourth slot.

There weren't many great scores in 1999, which is probably why Twelfth Night got nominated. I can't see Coast of Utopia's score getting nominated. Grey Gardens, Curtains and Spring Awakening are locks though. Fame Becomes Me and the very forgettable Legally Blonde score will fill out the rest of the category. Does anyone miss having four nominees? Five is ridiculous and six for the Drama Desks is insane. Speaking of Drama Desks, since Grey Garden's brilliant lyrics aren't elligible this year (they certainly deserved the prize last year) and Spring Awakening's lyrics are insipid, does anyone get the hint the late Fred Ebb might get a Drama Desk for Lyrics? (along with Kander and Holmes of course) He hasn't won since 1969 for Zorba. Spring Awakening, I believe is elligible, and I believe will probably, and most unfortunately win Best Music.
