My god! Can't believe the rapid response. Thank you so much. Since you told me that Jekyll is going into the Marquis, does that mean Scarlett/Maggie the Cat is staying at the Richard Rogers until Tony time?

It's been stated numerous times that Cat can't extend because of her movie career.

Maybe they'll try to find a replacement or something? Seems like a lot of empty theaters.

Anything going into the Kerr?

Yes, The Testimate of Mary with Fionna Shaw (April 22nd-June 16th). Fiona plays Mary 30 years after Jesus Christ was crucified. I have several friends in London who have raved about the show.

Is the Simon staying empty until Big Fish arrives in the fall?

Sounds like we might as well and go ahead and cross off one of these theaters as being vacant. I've been talking with others and The Glass Menagerie sounds like it will be on Broadway right before Tony Award cutoff date. Go Cherry!

It would be a beautiful fit at the Belasco.

How about Studio 54 after Drood closes in March? Or the Stephen Sondheim? That theatre has been dark since Anything Goes closed last summer.

THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL is going into the Sondheim.

The dark theaters remaining iirc are:

Belasco
Circle in the Square
Longacre
Neil Simon (until BIG FISH)
New Amsterdam (after MARY POPPINS)
Richard Rodgers (after CAT)
Studio 54 (after DROOD)
St. James (after Barry Manilow)

And the New Amsterdam will presumably be closed for renovations until ALADDIN.

What do we have coming that has no theatre booked? If we take MENAGERIE as one, then what else is announced? MISS FIRECRACKER? VELOCITY OF AUTUMN?

March/April normally a show is loaded into every Broadway theater, so worrying a handful are dark, is the economy going off the side of a cliff?

Still plenty of time for something else to come in. No more big musicals are opening, so it's pretty easy for a play to swoop in and open on time.

"Still plenty of time for something else to come in."

At what point will all the shows that are opening before the Tony deadline "declare?" At some point, they will need to have contracts signed, theater booked, announcements made and tickets on sale. About when is that point?

I thought I had a pretty good idea of what was coming and now I see that Glass Menagerie is on the radar. And when do Miss Firecracker and Velocity of Autumn need to announce?

I always wonder about this for spring. Just curious.

I think this will be the first spring in ages where we see several houses dark. The Simon & New Amsterdam are basically booked, but will still be empty(I still think Poppins should have wait a few more months before closing). Circle in the Square just lost their booking for the spring, so I doubt anything last minute will book that theater. And I doubt any kind of play will book the St. James. Simply too big. I still wish Roundabout would revive Dancin', even for just a 3 month limited run at Studio 54.

If Roundabout was smart, they should have opened Drood now-ish, and let it run through the Tonys. It's bound to win the Best Revival Tony since there isn't anything else going on, right? But instead they'll have a dark theater.

I think ANNIE is the only other revival this season.

Pippin & Jekyll & Hyde are both revivals.

CINDERELLA will be deemed a revival.

With all we've been hearing about the changes to Cinderella, I am not as certain of its status as a revival. Shouldn't the next set of "decisions" be coming out soon?

If I'm the producers of CINDERELLA, and I see MATILDA standing in my way for the Tony, I petition as hard as I can to be a Revival. That's where my two cents stand.

Exactly.

Plus, it IS a revival. It's an highly altered book, and may be eligible for Best Book, but in its entirety not a brand new musical.

Shows that have existing material that are shaped to be a new musical (SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM, FOSSE, CONTACT, PRINCE OF BROADWAY) could qualify as a new musical, however.

Cross out the Longacre because they booked a new musical coming in on July 9th and opening August 4th. The musical was done here in Seattle but I don't know anything about it. It has new producers and writers, lyricists who are newbies to broadway. The title of the show is First Date and was also mentioned in Friday's New York Times.

It was also mentioned on this site and there is a thread about it.
