Wow, only one performance and he's already "sick".

I wonder if his understudy could go on....if I was an investor, I would be nervous!

"Sick." The quotation marks imply you don't believe Manilow's reason. Why?

You can't really help when germs attack -- and it would have little to do with how many performances he has or hasn't gotten through. If the man has bronchitis, it's pretty hard to perform decently let alone do a full concert.

Sheesh.

I totally agree. I just found it funny, because my friend told me that Barry won't make it on Broadway. I was like why? He said, the man is getting too old (though his facelift looks great), and that by the second performance he will be calling out sick. When I read that he was ill (wish him a quick recovery), I just could not help but think wow, how true that was.

Why would that be accurate? The man had a two year residency in Las Vegas not that long ago. I think he can handle it...

It's flu season. He got sick. Get over it.

Yeah, I would seriously question Barry's stamina as a performer because of this now too- because its not like 75% of the country is caught up in one of the worst cold and flu seasons in over 20 years...

Performers cannot control when they get sick. Liza had to cancel several performances of her engagement at the Palace a few years back because of a throat infection. It happens. As others have said, we're currently experiencing one of the worst flu seasons in decades, and it's particularly bad in New York. The man is 70 years old. Cut him some slack, show some respect.

Maybe not a Liza comparison. Maybe a Steve Kazee?

Liza was in a similar situation to Manilow: limited engagement, unexpected illness, lots of people making assumptions.

And of course 70 years old is like one foot in the grave? How about Chita and Rita and Estelle Parsons and Angela Lansbury?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Chita was out of Drood for nearly a week due to illness. Anyone can get sick.

Chita just missed almost a week of performances due to flu, so perhaps she's not your best example.

Way to read into a comment, jeez.

Would you rather have him go on and lip-synch?

"the facelift looks great"? OBVIOUSLY you are trolling.

Yeah, no kidding. I'm no fan of Manilow, but way to kick a guy when he's down. He's obviously very ill. I'm glad that he's taking some real time to get better.

Exactly Joe. This latest lift must have been a Bob's Budget Facelift. His entire face is 100% smooth and doesn't move at all. It's funny to watch his upper lip while he's talking or singing.

Maybe he can lip-sync. If Beyonce can do it (allegedly), so can he.

I think Manilow had a small window of hotness from around 1979-1983. Hasn't looked good since then. Liberace passed the torch on to him and he totally ran with it.

He had a fresh-faced cuteness during his popstar phase in the late 70's. but I'd much rather see a "natural looking" guy who's not a male model than someone who looks completely fake and pulled tighter than a harp string.

Im sure he is stressing out that he is sick... and that is probably making him even sicker. im not a fan of his but i feel for the man, im sure this was going to be his big comeback

Wow, only one performance and he's already
Posted by Jane2 2013-01-24 15:57:05

I don't think Manilow needs a comeback.

I'm a casual fan of him, and I'm just making fun of a bad facelift.

I am sorry he's sick and I hope he's well soon.

Comeback? The man has never stopped recording. All his albums since 2006 except the Christmas album peaked in the top 20. You either need to fall out of favor or disappear from the public eye to have a comeback. Manilow has done neither. He's been the ever-present American chipmunk for 40 years.

He had reduced his performances in Vegas and than stopped them altogether. He may not be ready to perform and obviously needs more rest.

With so much riding on this concert, you would of thought he would of invested $25 for a flu jab at Duane Reade.

Not to sound negative or cynical... but in the past when he cancelled in Vegas due to illness... word on the street was the real reason was because of low ticket sales.

Is he not out? I remember as far back as when "Mandy" was a hit, everyone said it was really "Manny."

Anyway, the guy doesn't need to perform ever again if he chooses. He's loaded.

Flu shots don't prevent bronchitis. They don't even always prevent the flu.

"Not to sound negative or cynical... but in the past when he cancelled in Vegas due to illness... word on the street was the real reason was because of low ticket sales."

Are you freakin' kiddin' me? Word is that he grossed $447,956 for only two previews. I don't have verification for that yet, but those two performances he did manage were very well attended and commanded high ticket prices.

And no, he doesn't need to come out. His private life is none of your business.

Posted by theaternut 2013-01-24 18:13:22

I think he does. How could he not come out by now? I could give a crap about his private life. But he should come out. And I have no idea how his box office is doing nor do I care. But tkts had some great 50% seats.

Your post is full of contradiction. You think he should be out but you don't care about his private life. Why then do you think he should be out? What's that to you?

You have no idea nor do you care what his box office is like, yet you suggest that he's faking an illness because of low ticket sales?
