I don't have a recording of this, but I love the songs they play on Sirus Broadway station!

The book was the worst part of the show -- songs, performances, design, Choreography, etc., etc. were terrific. But the book was a drag. Having said that, and partcularly after the Clear Day disaster, I don't have too much faith in any rewrites. What I would like to see is have some venturesome label put out a complete recording of the entire show -- maybe with Lupone and Stokes-Mitchell as the leads.

"maybe with Lupone and Stokes-Mitchell as the leads."
LuPone did the show for Encores. While she was good, I felt her "I Love Paris" was too forceful. She lost the subtle beauty of the song. It's not a song to be belted.

It does seem that this is the kind of revival that needs at least one star name to succeed, doesn't it?

I love Paris and Cole Porter but this is an impossible sell.

This will definitely need a star name to draw the sector that has no idea what CAN CAN is.

The 1981 revival bombed, lasting only 5 performances.

You were the only one. She stopped the show dead in it's tracks with the song and rightfully so. She was amazing and I don't think I've ever heard that song sung with so much heart. I can't see this show being done without her and quite frankly, I wouldn't want to see it if it is.

The fact they have two writers working on the book and neither have substantial theatre experience doesn't inspire confidence.

But will she do it once they've given all the hit songs to Harry Connick, Jr.?

I don't know if you were kidding or not about casting him, but what a great idea for the judge!
Isn't Patti LuPone a little old for Pistache now?

They will need a star, a big name for this to sell. Not even LuPones name I don't think could make this a hit again for a big commercial run.
Good luck to it though but I can see down the line Can Can will end Can't Can't

If that's true it really shows how bad Broadway audiences have become. It means a show like "Nice Work" can sell on the name of Matthew Broderick, an actor mainly remembered for a movie he did years ago, but has become a bad triple threat (can't act, can't sing, can't dance) and has played the same character for the last twenty years.
Meanwhile a truly talented actress like Patti Lupone (can sing, can dance, can act) can't sell a show? That would be very sad if it's true.

I'd love to see Patti do the part, too, but I wonder if she's enough of a draw to sell this rather arcane property to a quantity of tourists sufficient to make it pay off.

Oh, why not?
Shape up the book--may the word 'reboot' never leave your lips--, cast Patti, and you could have a success like ANYTHING GOES.
EDIT: That Patti clip is amazing. Simple Broadway tune given a kind of stunning gravitas. Lovely.

I saw Donna McKechnie at the Strand Theatre in London a million years ago (well about 25 actually) and it was a fun show. I'd love to see it again.

There's a reason why Cole Porter didn't seek out Ethel Merman for Can-Can. He didn't want a belt voice singing the role. It should be done by someone more like Piaf.

Lilo didn't belt? Nor Piaf? What do you call it then?
Nobody sounds like Merman except impressionists. That doesn't mean the other ladies aren't belting.

Okay here is an unbiased opinion
I watched the You tube clip of Patti.
I am neither a Patti mega fan or a Patti Mega-hater.
Like all actors she does some extraordinary work (Gypsy, Evita,) and some well
not so great work (I mean who could have saved Women on the Verge-not her best performance.)
But after watching the I love Paris--You Tube Clip.... Patti was perfection in this number. Wistful, yearning, Melancholy and interesting. Wonderful rendition. Perfection. I never heard it sung better.
If I was the casting God, I say give this part to Patti!!

Years ago I saw a touring edition headed by Chita Rivera and the Rockettes, with a much rewritten book and song line-up. Later I saw a regional production that used the original book. Neither really worked, mainly because the "scandalous" nature of teh Can-can dance is muted.
The dance was considered risque because the can-can girls would remove their underwear and were "flashing" the mostly male audience. Obviously they could not do that in a 1953 Broadway musical (and in the movie they are all wearing very frilly panties.) Without it being made clear what the scandal is all about, the show will not work. They could have cheated and had the girls downstage dancing facing upstage where the shocked/titillated reactions of the onlookers would have communicated what they saw.
I don't understand those who complain about teh score... at lest 5 songs became standards and the rest are just as entertaining.
The Broadway cast album was originally a Capitol Records issue, most recently on CD from Broadway Angel and still in print but barely.

"It is a myth that the cancan was ever frequently danced without drawers."
Displaying one's bloomers was shocking enough in Victorian Europe.

"Patti was perfection in this number. Wistful, yearning, Melancholy and interesting."
And loud. People in Paris could hear her and called City Center and asked if she could tone it down as they were trying to get their children to sleep.
