Michael Reidel reports: http://m.nypost.com/p/entertainment/theater/hit_miss_for_producer_fSgvICW35EYjNkgMt3DmbJ
Personally I think Cam Mac needs to cash in on les Mis first then worry about Miss Saigon in say 3-4 years. If the Les Mis film is uber successful they should launch another Les Mis tour in the US, as they're reportedly bringing the current tour to Broadway in summer 2013. Miss Saigon should wait until at least 2015 for a major US revival, then they can bill it as the 25th anniversary revival. The movie should come a bit after it reopened on Broadway, IMHO. I don't think you'd have to revive Miss Saigon before making a movie adaptation of it.
I personally have always felt that Miss Saigon was far better suited for a movie adaptation than Les Mis. The story is more intimate.

I agree. And Les Miz isn't getting the glowing reviews I thought it would be.

The reviews may not be glowing but they are mostly positive. Les Mis the film will be successful. $500M successful? Maybe not. Not even Chicago made that much globally. I do think Miss Saigon will eventually be made into a film nevertheless. However, they have to rein in the budget to do well. Fortunately, other than recreating the evacuation of Saigon and possibly "The American Dream", there aren't really that many costly showpieces in the musical.

CHICAGO did not have the brand recognition that LES MISERABLES has. If it doesn't do well, I think it will have been because people think it's too depressing. Many Americans may look at the title and say, "Why would I pay to see miserable people singing?"

Isn't that Mamma Mia business? Yikes, unless this an international smash it will never get there.

I think expectations that Les Mis will gross $500 million are a little far fetched. It would have to be a blockbuster of Hobbit or Skyfall proportions and I don't think that's likely to happen.

I think a movie will happen anyway, Miss Saigon lends itself better to film.but I think it'll cost more to make.
Realistically, I think Les Mis will do at best $250-300m worldwide which would be great but lower than Mamma Mia!

Count me in on the 'Miss Saigon working better as a film than Les Mis' vote. I think we'll see the revivals happen first, then perhaps a movie will come. Just as long as Lea Salonga gets some sort of cameo-maybe Gigi?

I predict she will be on a picture as Kim's mother, while Kim holds it in her hands while singing "You know all and you forgive me, loving parents that you are"

Miss Saigon has less opportunity for star power.

And that's a wonderful thing.
The story is the star.
The more unknown the actors are, the better. And they should focus on real singers here. That is necessary for this material.

Too bad people won't get excited for unknown actors.

Too bad filmmakers make the mistake of thinking that too.
Too bad no one believes a word Russel Crowe is singing, not even the fans.
Too bad people are not fast learners.

Too bad you think one can not decide how an actor acts and sings after seeing 12 scenes.
I have news for you, most people can.

Okay. I saw the movie and I was fine with Crowe.
At least you'll have saved yourself ten bucks by getting what you needed to get out of it by viewing 12 scenes.

Too bad it could have made 4 times that if the singing was actually good.
They are missing out on a huge part of the population. But I'm glad they got the 4 Pierce Brosnan fans in the house. And I hope they loved his performance.

Too bad I don't really care who likes and who doesn't but I do think proclamations about who is connected to their singing and the like should be saved until seeing after the film, even if one did watch 12 whole scenes on one's computer.

Pyllis, I make perfect sense. 12 scenes is a lot.
But be my guest and be the "Clapping cattle" that swallows everything and still has no idea what's going on, not even after 12 scenes.
I wish I could be like that. Man, I would enjoy everything!

Ok...
Well, it seems clear to me that CamMac is gearing up for a Miss Saigon movie. If Les Miz is successful, then the studio will consider making another movie musical, and gee, what luck that Miss Saigon is being revived in the West End. The timing seems very much planned. I could see the studios developing Miss Saigon and seeing how well the revival plays in London. Then the movie could be produced in concert with a revival on Broadway.

I think that Miss Saigon could do really well on screen, and with the right cast and director it could be brilliant and a huge success. I think is Les Miz does really well, we could get Miss Saigon out in theatres by 2014 or 2015.

That didn't really ring true for Phantom though, which did middling business despite having an arguably brand recognition than Les Miz. Of course Phantom didn't have the name cast, and was never really taken seriously as an Oscar contender even when announced.
As much as I kinda thought The Paperboy was a camp pleasure, I hope Lee Daniels isn't still rumoured to be attached to a possible Miss Saigon.
