Meryl Streep as the witch

Allison Janney as Jack's Mother

Not my choices, but oh well!

"STREEP DOES NOT HAVE THE VOICE FOR THIS ROLE!"

Nor the beauty. The witch has to turn into a beauty. I wanted Catherine Zeta-Jones.

And I don't know if it could have happened, but Susan Boyle as Jack's mother would have been interesting.

But they are just rumored and often imdb changes. I remember a few years ago they had Judi Dench rumored for five movies in a row.

Streep is my favorite actress (cliched, I know) and she'd be great (I doubt there's much truth to this rumor...yet) but I wanted an unexpected choice, she's a little too obvious. Glenn Close would have been perfect if they were going for an older actress, she can be scary, funny and emotional, though it might have been a "been there, done that" kind of role for her. Helen Mirren in a musical would be awesome too, especially as the Witch, given how sexy she is. With the younger actresses, Toni Collette is as good a choice as they'll find, but Marshall is such a star-Fucker that he would probably only consider Collette (who has never quite become as big of a star as she should be, say the way Laura Linney became) for like the Stepmother just because she's not an Oscar winner, and her name isn't Kate Hudson.
Janney on the other hand would be perfection as Jack's Mother. Janney was in the recent reading, so if she is in fact in the movie it gives me hope for Anna Kendrick (who played Cinderella) to get cast.

I wouldn't mind seeing Streep in this. Hell, I would love it.
This may be a "ignorant" question but after listening to the score of "Into the Woods" countless times, what makes the Witch's part difficult to sing? I mean, Sondheim's music is tough to navigate but in terms of RANGE (high ones/low ones) it doesn't seem too difficult to sing. Maybe that is just me. I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to "Into the Woods" specifically.

It never ceases to amaze me how many of you think this is going to be a filmed version of the stage play. That's already been done -- the DVD is available on Amazon ($15.21).

This will be a big budget film (one of the reasons Disney & Warner Bros. are splitting the cost) with an all-star cast, lots of CGI special effects (do you really think they are going to have an actor in a Wolf costume?), filmed in 3D with a new screenplay, new music arrangements, new choreography, etc.

It's a MOVIE not a stage musical!!!!

James Lapine has already turned in his final draft of the screenplay. You can bet your arse that Rob Marshall has ghostwriters on the payroll to tinker with the screenplay. That is the way it is done in the film business (especially on big budget films).

It will be live action with many, many visual effects (I wouldn't be surprised if the Witch is visually something similar to the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland). And yes, it will be filmed in 3-D.

I actually think Streep might be able to pull off the vocals. If it's too high, they can always use the Vanessa Williams keys, which are, sometimes, very effective. I'm not too worried about the demands of the score. I could see her playing it like a mix of Madeline from Death Becomes Her and Miranda from The Devil Wears Prada and that would be just fine with me.

"I could see her playing it like a mix of Madeline from Death Becomes Her and Miranda from The Devil Wears Prada and that would be just fine with me."

See, for me, that's the problem. She's got so many 'stock' characters to 'mix and match' that I fear what we'd get is a hodgepodge of past roles she's played, not an original character. And I am in the camp that detests her singing voice.

Normally I'm the guy who wails and gnashes teeth if a non-singer is a given a role beyond their talents, especially when it comes to mainstream (read: film) adaptations of musicals, but I'm not upset at all about the possibility of a Meryl Streep Witch. She's not a terrible singer, and the Witch doesn't have to have a beautiful voice-she just has to carry Children Will Listen and can act through the rest of her numbers. Also, though Meryl does have a bit of Streepy-ness (read: sameness) in most of her performances, I think those qualities would actually work quite well for the Witch.

Also I like Janney in just about everything she's ever done, even if news of her initial casting sometimes makes me wrinkle my nose and let out an exasperated "really?".

I like the idea of Meryl as the Witch but I have another interesting possibility, Jane Lynch. I've heard her on Glee and she definitely can sing at least enough for that part. She also is very good at that kind of character, acting-wise.

I also would want Carly Rose Sonenclar as Little Red Riding Hood. If you've seen her on X-Factor, you know she has the talent to pull off that part vocally and if you know her from The Electric Company like I do, you know she is also a very good actress.

My last idea is Matthew Broderick as the Baker. I don't know why but he's played that kind of role before and he just seemed right.

I know beauty can be subjective, but there is no way I could ever believe that Jane Lynch has that post-transformation beauty that audiences would want to see.

Lynch also doesn't have the sophisticated air that is usually associated with the Witch. She'd have made a great Baker's Wife some years ago.
Ewan McGregor should play the Baker and I could see him getting cast in this movie too. A comedian like Jim Carrey might also be interesting. I just want to hear an actual confirmation of who'll be in this, wonder if they've even started casting.

This is a movie musical based on a Sondheim show. Big names won't help much at the box office. Look at Sweeney Todd. Johnny Depp's groaning not only butchered the score, but didn't make for a hit movie. Keep artistic integrity and cast SINGERS.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by TalkinLoud 2013-01-13 15:00:42

You're saying that Sweeney Todd compromised on artistic integrity? You know Sweeney got for the most part great reviews, right? 83 on Metacritic, 86% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Lots of people, myself included, consider it one of the finest movie musicals in quite some time.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by AEA AGMA SM 2013-01-13 15:03:14

I'm going to guess Warners and Dreamworks were not entirely displeased with Sweeney. It had an estimated budget of fifty million and made just a little over three times that worldwide (about fifty-two million domestically). It also picked up an Oscar nomination for Depp and costume designer Colleen Atwood, as well as winning the award for art direction. Yes, it's not the big prize, but they can still slap "the Oscar Winning film" moniker on all future marketing.

I'm thinking Jesus Christ, Superstar ... 1776 ... Fiddler on the Roof ... Oliver ...

So maybe 40-ish years ago?

EDIT: I would say "Rent," but it did have Rosario Dawson and Jessie L. Martin who were both pretty well known by larger movie & TV audiences.

By the way, it's interesting that both Superstar and Fiddler had the same director, Norman Jewison, who was a "star director" himself (a "name director" in other words). He didn't use established stars in either film.

Fiddler was a hit, but Superstar was not. (Neither was 1776.)

Oliver! was also a hit (and won Best Picture).

Big names in movie musicals is always tricky in my opinion. On the one hand, most of these stars don't have the voices and I'd love for Broadway actors to get more exposure, but on the other these names expose people to musicals who may have never had an interest before. I know a lot of people who discovered how much they like musicals through seeing Sweeney Todd, and the only reason that they went was to see Johnny Depp. It's kind of cool! It might not be the most direct or artistic exposure, but it's nice to see the interest peak.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by best12bars 2013-01-13 16:12:24

I do think in today's market you can get away with casting one or two key musical film roles (even a lead) with unknowns or relative unknowns. You need to make sure for every "Jennifer Hudson" or "Ellen Greene" you have plenty of star power surrounding them. It's less of a risk, and ensures that at least one role will have someone who was cast purely on ability and not on salability.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by Visceral_Fella 2013-01-13 16:20:45

Very true, I'm guessing that even Anika Noni Rose in Dreamgirls was a risk. I'm so glad that she got that exposure going on to be Tiana and all.

Then again in the case of Lorell, I'm not sure if any major name would want that part especially with Beyonce as Deena.

I keep forgetting that Dreamgirls was Sharon Leal's jump into film as well. So in a sense, 2 of the 4 Dreams were not names, while Jennifer Hudson was only a runner up on AI. I guess the producers felt that the film was sufficiently balanced by having Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy in such memorable roles

With "Into the Woods," it's more of an ensemble piece, but I would say once you get past the Witch, the Baker, the Baker's Wife, and perhaps Cinderella, you're "out of the woods" and can cast lesser knowns around it.

But I have a feeling that's not going to happen. Marshall loaded up Nine. I hope he doesn't feel a need (or studio pressure) to do that again. It can actually be distracting, especially in smaller roles where a star's presence can sometimes pull or completely blow the focus of the story.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by Jungle Red 2013-01-13 16:50:41

It also depends on the adaptation. For whatever reason, Burton/Producers felt it necessary to cut the chorus from Sweeney Todd which made everything else seem out of place. I understand it, but it put too much emphasis on the singing and ruined the surprise. Every time I've seen Sweeney Todd, when it's done well, I forget the twist. I knew it from the beginning in the movie. That's my major gripe. It has nothing to do with casting.

The best thing Into the Woods has going for it is that its mostly sung, like the successful Les Mis. I got into it with a guy on another board about how he hated that they didn't change any of the singing to dialogue. He felt it would've made a better movie. I disagreed.

In my opinion, the witch is the one that'll carry the billing. The Baker and the Baker's Wife need to be known, but B will suffice. Every thing else can be fresh talent. I really don't want another NEW YEARS DAY where it takes ten minutes to get through the credits.

I'm basing my casting on the only song to make it on the pop charts, and that was "Children Will Listen".

Two formalist questions that the triumph of Les Miserables raises:

1. Will we be seeing the return of the live-sung technique for Into The Woods, or will it be studio-recorded and then mimed as is the standard?

2. Given the ambiguous fairy-tale nature of setting and time, will we be going Brit or American (or mixed) for the "style" presented by our cast?

If the Baker and Baker's Wife can be B-list, I wouldn't mind seeing Great Britain's Tennant and Tate duo- they both sing ENOUGH, and the Baker and Wife are not Javert (although I didn't have much of a problem with Javert- his singing may not have worked on the stage, but it didn't seem to fail the movie's style). David Tennant and Catherine Tate have teamed up for West End, Shakespeare, television's Doctor Who, and other projects, and are of the right age and types for such a film.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by best12bars 2013-01-14 15:11:54

^ I'm going to guess we will see more live singing. "Into the Woods" has several songs that are almost conversational or that go in and out of actual dialogue. Perhaps on a few of the bigger (more sung) songs like Stay With Me, Last Midnight, and even the chorus work, that might be done in a studio and actually work better than having everything sung live.

But "He's a Very Nice Prince" or "I Know Things Now" or even the opening sequence could be great if it were live.

That would also depend on who's cast and if they can handle it.

Part of me still wishes they would cast Sandra Bullock as the Baker's Wife and then dub her. She would be such a great choice for that role, but she can't sing.

(And yes, I know the chance of that happening is pretty nonexistent.)

Too much is done in the name of box office, I get it's a reality, but I think that you could have solid box office by having a mixed group of people in the vein of LES MISERABLES. There's plenty of young roles in INTO THE WOODS, why make the Baker and his Wife younger than they need to be?

Having the baker and his wife be played by younger actors takes away the urgency of their need to have kids. Audiences will likely think that they have the rest of their lives ahead of them. I'm not saying they should be played by almost 40yo's but not in their early 20s.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by darquegk 2013-01-14 18:45:54

I feel like we can definitely expect a more sung-through Woods than we would have in the Sweeney Todd-to-Nine era, thanks to Les Miserables revitalizing that approach on film for the mainstream. People may feel that if Woods is put to more dialogue and dubbed singing/"pretty voices" it will lack the visceral immediacy that Les Mis, despite its more controversial cinematic and directorial choices, does seem to possess.

The Witch will have to be A-list and that's fine as long as they can kinda sing the role. I'd be fine with Meryl. She's not ideal, but she probably find some way to sell it. I probably wouldn't mind Zeta-Jones either.

I'm more nervous about the Baker and the Baker's Wife. Every crappy production I've seen had one thing in common - those two roles were horribly cast. They're the heart and soul of the piece and it's gonna take more than star power to make it work.

This might sound out of place but Lady Gaga would melt souls as the witch!! James Marsden could work as the baker and Kristen Chenoweth would be amazing as his wife, if she isn't too old for the part. Many people forget that the bakers wife has to have strong comedic skills as well. I would love for Lea Michelle to be cinderella, but Samantha Barks could work as well. Since this is a disney movie is very likely that they will cast disney channel stars as little red and jack, I guess China could work although I would prefer Isabelle Allen. The remaining roles should be filled with broadway stars.

He didn't go for Chenoweth as Roxie or Mary Sunshine when given the chance in CHICAGO, instead he cast an A-list Oscar nominee and an Emmy winner (and somewhat recent SAG winner for ensemble) in the roles, respectively.

I thought "Into The Woods" was due to begin filming in February? In an interview on Graham Norton's Radio 2 show back in December here in the UK, when promoting the Menier Chocolate Factory 's production of "Merrily We Roll Along", Graham asked Sondheim when "Into The Woods" would begin filming, and he said that (all being well), filming would begin in February. The witch's age has nothing to do with Red's granny's age. The grannie of a 15ish-year-old would generally be between 50 and 60 years old. Angela is 88. She's not even great grandma. She's heading into great-great grandma territory. Not that I think too many film-goers will care or notice such things. But if you're going to use age as an argument against Staunton, she's really MUCH closer to appropriate than Angela is.

Posted by madbrian 2013-01-15 11:44:05

For Ref's granny to be 50, both Red and her parent(s) would have to have been born around age 16-17 or so. The grandparents of most 15 year-olds are somewhere around the 65-80 age bracket.

"The grandparents of most 15 year-olds are somewhere around the 65-80 age bracket."

Maybe in this day and time when it is quite common for parents to bear children in their 30s and even 40s.

But in the time of INTO THE WOODS (which I believe is timeless but let's say for the sake of argument 200 years ago when the Grimm Brothers were alive), it would be common to become parents at a very young age and a 50-year old Grandmother of a 15-year old would be the norm (if she even lived to be 50 in an era when average life expectancy for a female was 35-40 years).

Posted by artscallion 2013-01-15 12:09:27

Even in more recent times, when I was 15 both my grannies were in their early 50s, as were most of my friends'. I think the 40-year-old parent phenomena is too recent to have even resulted in 15-year-old grandchildren yet. The then 40-year-old woman would have had to given birth in 1958 to have a 15-year-old grandchild today. Possible, but not the norm by any means.

Darren Criss will be 26 years old next month. Unless Rob Marshall films in manimation, he is too old to play an adolescent boy who discovers his sexual awakening.

Not to mention Criss is all surface, no subtlety, at least in GLEE where the writing might be terrible but plenty of actors have done a great job. Cast him as Cinderella's prince (and someone else as the Wolf).
I'd like to see Dockery tackle the Witch some day, I don't know that she possesses the quirkiness that someone like Anna Kendrick or Anna Camp could find in the role. She could always surprise though, I'm not familiar with her work outside of DOWNTON ABBEY.

I'm now obsessed with the idea of Melissa McCarthy as the Baker's Wife. How about her Gilmore Girls co-star Lauren Graham? She was in Guys and Dolls a few years ago and, while the production itself sucked, it turned out that she has a very nice voice. They'd both have the fun, quirkiness, and humor down pat.

Couldn't Bernadette play jack's mom? It would be nice to see her involved in this like Colm was involved in Les Mis. I second Suton as the baker's wife. I'm still obssesed with Gaga as the witch and Lea as Cinderella.

Since Brian d'Arcy James has had experience in film and television I think he would be excellent as the Baker. If they want someone young for Little Red Riding Hood I think Carly Rose Sonenclar would be a very good choice. However, if Disney really is going to distribute this, then maybe they will want someone older. On ABC's 'Once Upon a Time' the character is played by Meghan Ory who is an adult. I also think it would be interesting to see Sara Ramirez as the Witch.

I don't think Little Red in ITW and Little Red in OUAT are Comparable characters. In ITW, Red is on the cusp of a sexual awakening. No indication of anything like that for UUAT, where Red is actually a wolf, not the prey of one.

I keep hearing that James Marsden as one of the princes would just be repeating his role from Enchanted. I've only seen that movie once, but I don't remember his character being anything remotely like either of the princes in Into the Woods. His character in Enchanted did not, from what I recall, have nearly the attitude or self-awareness that Cinderella's Prince exhibits. Lines such as "I was raised to be charming, not sincere" seem like the exact opposite of what his character in Enchanted would have said.

Nicki, while I adore her, can't sing it. I saw her live, as Britney's opening act, and when the sung parts of her songs came on, they just played the vocals and she strutted around. I'm still a fan of Lady Gaga - I have chills thinking of her "Last Midnight."

Here is my ideal cast:
Witch - Lady Gaga
Baker's Wife - Kristen Wiig
Baker - Jason Segel
Jack - Logan Lerman
Cinderella - Anna Kendrick
Little Red- Sarah Hyland
Princes - Neil Patrick Harris and James Marsden
Giant's Voice - Helen Mirren

Would be fun if they got both Liam and Chris Hemsworth as the princes. I think they're both incredibly handsome.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by ray-andallthatjazz86 2013-01-18 11:57:51

I find both Hemsworths to be incredibly wooden on screen, which would work for the parts. I doubt Chris Hemsworth wants to do both this and the SNOW WHITE film though.
Kristen Wiig would be sublime as the Baker's Wife and she has been suggested by many from the time the movie was announced. She was supposedly one of five or six actresses being considered for Marshall's remake of THE THIN MAN, which apparently was shelved in favor of INTO THE WOODS, so I'm sure she is definitely a name that is actually in their sight. I'd much rather see her over more typical choices like Amy Adams or Sandra Bullock.
Jessica Chastain has gone on the record last year and this year (while promoting her different Oscar nods) that she'd love to do a movie musical. I wonder to what extent Marshall et al are considering her for the Baker's Wife.
And though many hated her singing in NINE (and I wonder if she liked the experience of working on it at all), I think Nicole Kidman could surprise everyone and turn out to be an incredible Witch. She lacks some of the earthiness that someone like Bernadette Peters brought to the role, but she'd find humor in all the unexpected parts. Her friend Naomi Watts would also be an interesting choice, if less likely as I doubt she sings.

I would enjoy Chris Hemsworth as Cinderella's Prince.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by ComingUpRoses2 2013-01-18 12:35:00

I didn't hate Kidman in Nine, but her character really served no point. She had 5 minutes of screen time tops including her big song.
I just didn't understand the key of "Unusual Way" they gave her. It was so low. From her singing in Moulin Rouge, it seemed she was more comfortable in a higher range.
I've really never found her terribly funny in anything other than To Die For, where she was hysterical. Maybe she could work, though. She has the beauty for the role, but I don't know if she has the pipes. Maybe with some coaching?

The Hemsworth brothers as the princes would be an inspired choice. They really are as dull as dishwater, but for the first time, it could work in their advantage.

I think the Baker's Wife needs a Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, or Lauren Graham type. I could see them all being truly hysterical and earthy.

Really emphasize the fact that this guy is the cookie-cutter Prince Charming, and that fairy tales rarely distinguish him from all the other princes.

Then, in the final minutes of the film, instead of the two princes returning again, we see a third identical prince with Sleeping Beauty.

Wow. Did this really apply to Streep? Of all the actresses in the world, I can't think of another one who is so great at starting from scratch with each character building it from the inside out. Stock characters? Are you kidding? Of course, a few of her roles are exaggerated (as they need to be) but she hardly resorts to pulling out a "stock character" and just replaying it.

I don't know if anyone on here saw him in 'Cyrano de Bergerac' but he did win a Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for that role.

I heard Nina Arianda is going to be the Baker's Wife but I think it should be Amy Adams. I saw her in the 2012 revival and she was really good. Adams seemed like a good choice, she's very versatile and can be funny but it seems like most critics (both here and on the national papers) thought she was miscast. I've said on this thread and every other INTO THE WOOD movie thread that in my opinion the role needs to be cast with someone who's ridiculously funny but who has the range to pull off the no no-sense quality of the role and her frustration with the life she has with the Baker (is she basically what happens to Dot after getting married to Louis the baker?). That's why the likes of Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig should be at the top of their list over typical Hollywood starlets.

Madbrian, Parker might be good in a high profile theatre production either in NY or elsewhere. Honestly, I've only seen her in THE PEOPLE IN THE PICTURE and she was one of the weak links (in a production where only Donna Murphy--who'd have been a great Baker's Wife herself around the time of the original production--came out relatively unscathed, so I assume that's hardly her best work). I thought she was hilarious in the LES MIS spoof she did recently, so I get where you're coming from. I assume that for this film they'll want some major stars in the principal roles, I'd love the idea of Nina Arianda of course, but I imagine she'll get passed over for bigger stars.

The King and I was probably where it was done best. My Fair Lady gets on my nerves every time Audrey opens her mouth to sing and Marni's pitch perfect soprano comes out. It's just silly.

I don't know if he can sing or not, but I think he learns Maksim Chmerkovskiy would do a good job as Cinderella's Prince or Rapunzel's Prince. Derek Hough also still looks young enough to play Jack and he has singing experience. Both of these guys want to pursue acting. Derek's sister Julianne could probably take on one of the roles in this film as well.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by beautywickedlover 2013-02-26 16:27:30

Rebel Wilson actually reminds me a little bit of Beverly Rudd who played Red Riding Hood in Regnt's Park Open Air Theatre production. She would be good in that role.

Richard H. Blake actually has a little bit of film and television experience. He would actually be perfect as one of the Princes. Hadley Fraser and Ramin Karimloo would be choices also. I think Disney is probably looking for actors over 30 to play the Princes.

Into the Woods Movie Cast

Rebel Wilson would be so good as Red Riding Hood! I'm not sure what ages they are looking at though, they might want to make her a lot younger, but Wilson (who is in her mid 20s I believe) would be hilarious in every way.
Melissa McCarthy just had a huge success with IDENTITY THIEF and BRIDESMAIDS, they really need to be talking to her. If they are going for a much younger actress who can pull off the humor and bring in an audience, then it's hard to look past Jennifer Lawrence who could bring exactly the right kind of humor to the proceedings. Now it depends on how they are interpreting the curse. Some people think that it'd be unbelievable to have someone that young worrying so much about not having children, and I think "Moments in the Woods" works a lot better with an actress whom the audience would believe has settled into a certain kind of life. We'll see.

Kristen Wiig
Jennifer Lawrence

Actually the stars of this film should be young because in the past time that these fairy tales are set in people didn't live past like 40 or 50 and married and had children much younger, like when they were 17 or 18, right?

Also, the Baker's sister is Rapunzel and she is very young I believe (isn't it stated somewhere she is 18?), so the Baker who was "no more than a babe" when his family moved into the cottage next to the witch, would not be that much older than Rapunzel when they had her.

But they wouldn't be newlyweds, they would be people who had been married for a long enough time in those days to be concerned that they hadn't had a child yet. They still would've been trying for years.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by best12bars 2013-02-28 14:10:46

Well if Lady Mary and Matthew can be worried about being childless after a year of marriage...

It isn't how long they've been married, it's the age of the characters. They aren't 21 or 22 hoping desperately to have a child before it's too late.

Even the actors are older. Dan Stevens is 30 and Michelle Dockery is 31. They aren't in their early 20s, and neither are the characters. And it's an "heir" they're worried about producing for Downton's sake, not just "let's try to have a baby." They had a lot of unspoken pressure on them to produce a male heir.

If the Baker and his wife are desperate to have a child at 21 or 22, most movie audiences older than them are going to think they're impatient and overly dramatic. It's not a huge problem at that age.

Witherspoon sang her songs in WALK THE LINE so there's at least precedent for her having sung in film before.

Reese is a pretty decent singer. She could probably handle the score quite well. She used to be a pretty dependable, quirky, hilarious actress who'd be perfect for a role like this. She started taking dull mainstream roles after Legally Blonde. I still think she has it in her to knock this role out of the park.

I'd always like Sandra Bullock, Kristen Wiig, Lauren Graham, or Melissa McCarthy, though. Those are my top choices.

Into the Woods Movie Cast

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by henrikegerman 2013-03-21 10:27:08

Her own singing in Walk the Line, playing a singer, was very impressive. If she can sing June Carter she can certainly handle the Baker's Wife vocally, but what really excites me about her for the role is the crackerjack irony, warmth (maybe that's not her rep offscreen but onscreen she's got it!) and down to earth common sense she has brought to many of her roles, which would be a perfect fit for this. it's exactly what made Gleason's performance so unforgettable and exactly what has often been lacking in other attempts to bring life to this role.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by Wilmingtom 2013-03-21 15:15:26

How about Minnie Driver as the Baker's Wife? She's a little long in the tooth (43) but not too far out of the realm. She has the quirkiness and the genuine heart for it, and she sings well enough for this role.

Into the Woods Movie Cast
Posted by ray-andallthatjazz86 2013-03-21 16:13:27

Driver would be a better fit as the Witch in a stage revival. Unfortunately, for some inexplicable reason, her career has largely stalled, no way they'd hire her to headline a film this huge, especially after PHANTOM was such a huge mess of a movie on just about every level.
If they do get Witherspoon, I hope she steps up her game, there was a time she was great in all her films but after she won the Oscar she hasn't given a single memorable acting turn. The debacle THIS MEANS WAR left me with no desire to see one of her films in a long time, a LEGALLY BLONDE/ELECTION Witherspoon would be fantastic in this, but she hasn't been that good in a very very long time.

I like the Kristen Wiig idea, but I don't think she'll be approached in a million years.
That's not really true. Marshall was considering Wiig for the lead in the THIN MAN re-make that was shelved in favor of fast-tracking INTO THE WOODS, I'm sure she was seen for this role as well. Her or Melissa McCarthy would be my top choices. Though of course I'd never say no to Toni Collette being cast in anything, something tells me she'll once again get passed over in favor of bigger names though, especially now that she's gonna try to go back to TV.

With filming expected to begin in October, when do you think the full cast will be announced? And who do you think are the top candidates for the baker's wife?

The fact that there was never an official announcement of Streep's casting in this movie makes me think that many of the roles are already cast and that there will be an official announcement of the entire cast when they are completely done.

Seriously, they just need to announce the cast already! I haven't heard any rumblings on Deadline, which is usually the go-to-source for early casting info. Witherspoon seems pretty booked at this point, but I still think she's gonna play the Baker's Wife.

"Seriously, they just need to announce the cast already!"

I agree. Plus, we need to hear some news soon because now according to Sondheim himself, production is supposed to begin in August rather than October. Also, a new song has been written for the film.

Interesting interview with Sondheim. Thanks for the link, Beautywickedlover. I do hope the reporter is incorrect about Babs getting ready to do Gypsy. Now that she has decided to direct a different movie, hopefully that will be the end of her playing Grandmama Rose.

Oh, Steve. For the love of God, leave this show alone. No new music, no replacing adults with children, just leave perfection alone.

I'm assuming that the producers of any musical just assume that they will automatically get at least one Oscar nomination for "Best Song" when they add a new song to the score. I mean if "Learn to Be Lonely" and "Suddenly" can get nominated how hard is it really?

Is this Rob Marshall with Emma Stone? She's been rumored for this for a long time.

To me, that looks like Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield and Rob Marshall heading west on 47th St.

Lol, Marshall looks like he wants to bang Andrew Garfield so badly in that picture! I wonder what role Stone would be considered for, she'd have made a great Little Red at one point, and she'll make a wonderful Baker's Wife eventually. I don't think she's the right age for the Baker's Wife, but not sure what age they're looking for. She'd make for a quirky, different take on Cinderella, we'll see.

Do they sing?

If they can't get Justin Timberlake to play Cinderella's Prince, I'd be okay with Andrew Garfield in the role.

I have to say that personally I have never seen or heard Emma Stone do anything that assures me she would be able to produce the type of vocal quality typically associated with the role of Cinderella on stage. She might be able to sing, but I would be shocked beyond belief if she has a soprano range hiding in that husky speaking voice of hers.

I believe she was rumored for Little Red back when her name first popped up in connection to the movie but I can't imagine someone of her status taking anything less than Cinderella.

So they have never lowered the singing key for an actor before (by the way, that's sarcasm Sheldon)?

Emma singing:

Yeah, she can sing. Sounds like a solid voice with a limited range, but she's not bad. I notice she leaves the high notes out here, so that's not making me think Cinderella, but who knows? Maybe they can dub her on the high notes.

Or maybe she's up for Jack.

EDIT: She would make a great stepsister, but the parts are too small for a star of her caliber (right now).

"So they have never lowered the singing key for an actor before (by the way, that's sarcasm Sheldon)?"

I'd kind of like to see the meltdowns that will occur around here if they start lowering keys for this movie.

There are a lot of things I would like to see Emma Stone do, just not the role of Cinderella in this movie.

It's a standard practice to lower keys, but in this case the voice is indisputably connected to the character. Princesses are sopranos or mezzos, I doubt Disney would change the image of their princess which they have so classically created and firmly established in the popular conscience.

She has also been seen in the parks and press events like this now.

"I was never a fan of her original dress, it wasn't as spectacular as to say it was the work of a fairy Godmother."

The New York Times actually thought that in the 1957 musical version with Julie Andrews, the main character was not wearing something that a Fairy Godmother would make.

"couldn't Cinderella have been dressed in a dreamlike ball gown of fantasy rather than a chic, form-fitting number?"

Here are articles that have mentioned Emma Stone possibly being in the film.

Why does Disney want the princesses to look like a bunch of Bratz dolls. Aurora and Belle especially look like the artists (whomever they are who've done these redesigns) wanted to be able to cast them in the animated version of Mean Girls.

Ariel looks stunning as usual, poor little snow white never grew up, and Belle is looking waaay too
flirty.

Mulan is NOT a princess!!! Why do they keep insisting she is one!!!

Kate would make a lovely baker's wife, but I don't think she's the kind of hot property Rob wants for this film.

I know that Cinema Blend said in January that Allison Janney was going to be a part of this movie, but she has been removed from IMDB. However, any member can add or edit it.

"Mulan is NOT a princess!!! Why do they keep insisting she is one!!!"

When I sent my cousin the video of Lea Salonga being honored a Disney Legend, she said I never knew Mulan was a Princess when did this happen? So, I asked someone at the Disney Store for her and they said Mulan was made an "honorary" Princess in the film when the Emperor gave her the crest. They also wanted to show girls that you don't have to be born into royalty or marry a prince to be considered a princess.

People are always making excuses for her, bottom line is she's not a princess she's just part of the princess franchise.

Salonga's other character, Jasmine, is the only one that looks exactly the same.

Winslet was actually my first thought when someone on this board mentioned an A-lister in talks for bakers wife. Second though was Scarlett Johansson. Anyways, here's more vids of Winslet singing.

Why does Disney want the princesses to look like a bunch of Bratz dolls.

Exactly!

They all look like pouty, pre-teen prostitutes.

Why is that attractive? And it goes against every single one of their stories, turning them into nothing more than vapid shopping mall seductresses.

Really sad.

"They also wanted to show girls that you don't have to be born into royalty or marry a prince to be considered a princess."

Because they hadn't done that with Cinderella? She's aristocratic, but not royalty.

Rapunzel isn't a princess either, for that matter. Jasmine is the daughter of the Sultan, but in reality, is she considered a princess?

I wonder if the boys will get makeovers. Prince Eric is still my favorite, followed by Prince Phillip.

"Rapunzel isn't a princess either, for that matter. Jasmine is the daughter of the Sultan, but in reality, is she considered a princess?"

In Tangled Rapunzel is the daughter of a king and a queen, so yes, she is a princess. Jasmine is referred to multiple times throughout Aladdin as Princess Jasmine, so, again, as far as the marketing is concerned, there is no reason to say she is not a princess.
