Odd that two of the shows you listed (South Pacific, Annie Get Your Gun) were both originally cast with Mary Martin, the original Maria Von Trapp on Broadway.

Guys - If we truly want this medium and the masterworks in it to survive, thrive and reach new, young audiences, we have to stop being so provincial in our thinking about interpretations or casting of them. Carrie is an amazing performer who knows damn well (as do the Producers and R&H) that the approach she takes with one of her number-one country/pop hits is not the approach to take with this project. She'll put the necessary work in. And if it means millions more become aware of music theatre, I say Amen!

Who knows? She could be good. Petula Clark played Maria in the 1981 London revival, and the real Maria von Trapp said Petula was the best Maria she had ever seen. Listening to cast recording of the Petula Clark version, I can tell you she played Maria with a pop sensibility and I quite liked it. Therefore, Carrie Underwood could be quite good!
I imagine this is how people would have reacted if the Internet was prevalent in 1997 when it was announced that Brandy would play Cinderella in a television remake of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. And now, the Brandy version is considered a "classic" for my generation.

Yeah- I think she can handle the singing but Maria has so many dimensions and I don't believe Carrie can handle the acting. Hopefully, she will get a great director (like Jennifer Hudson did for Dream Girls) and maybe she will surprise everyone- at least that's what I'm hoping. I can't tell you how many local shows I have seen where the lead could sing but not act- it's painful! Part of me also believes Carrie is just too commercially pretty for the part- that's just my opinion. I'm looking forward to seeing who the rest of the cast will be.

It is a good question why we accept a "standard" Brit or American accent in Sound of Music but would not accept a regional one. It's a convention we've grown accustomed to, and regional accents distract us and carry stereotypical baggage.
In any event, I seriously doubt Underwood will do this with a regional dialect.
Twang is not irrepressible. Just as Australians can sound generically American so can women from Oklahoma (hell, Chenoweth and O'Hara are from Oklahoma and Mary Martin was from Texas). She might be great.
And country singers don't have to sound country just as non-country singers can sometimes sing country.
No one objected to Gwyneth Paltrow in Country Strong (at least on those grounds, some people would object to Gwyneth in anything).
No one objected to Karen Black and Barbara Harris in Nashville.

30 Rock will be long gone by then, so it wouldn't really be NBC synergy, but I wouldn't mind him, either. I've always thought he would make a great Ben Stone in Follies.
I guess I kind of understand all this sturm und drang about Underwood because this is BWW, but when I saw this I admit I was a little surprised, but I don't really think she's that terrible a choice. Jennifer Hudson never acted before receiving the role of Effie, so anything is possible. I don't know much about Carrie Underwood except that she's the most successful and still relevant winner of American Idol. Plus, I loved her "Ever Ever After" in Disney's Enchanted.
Something else I just thought of. There's a reason why the film was not a direct adaptation of the original Broadway show, but maybe it doesn't matter since this won't be on the big screen?

Since I don't watch "American Idol," I really have no idea how talented Carrie Underwood is. But I was hoping that they would cast a Maria from the Broadway talent pool. It is too bad that television is so dependent upon high ratings. I think that Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are really off the wall with much of their TV casting choices. Their "The Music Man" with Matthew Broderick was disasterous. Thank God, I got to see the original "The Sound of Music" with Mary Martin and have watched the film version with Julie Andrews umpteenth times since its release in 1965. I guess they will cast an aging rock star as Captain Von Trapp.

I doubt the acting is going to be "difficult." Maria is not that complex of a character. Is it a classic? Of course. But Maria is not really a "difficult" role to act. If Carrie is able to portray a women who is questioning her path in life (either become a nun or live her life outside of the one place she knows) and is able to portray love and devotion to the children and the captain, she will be fine. The singing I believe she will be quite exceptional at. She will probably have to improve her upper register in terms of the "legit" notes but again, I'm sure she has a coach who is going to beat the entire score into her vocal chords.

Meron and Zadan have made some odd choices for their musicals. While I thought the casting in Chicago and even Hairspray was pretty spot on, their TV musicals have left a little to be desired. I think their best one was probably Annie.
They have a habit of casting actors who seem ideal on paper, but end up giving less than stellar performances (Midler in Gypsy and Broderick in The Music Man come to mind).
I actually don't think Carrie is a bad choice. She could pull a Reba and impress all of us. She certainly has a nice voice and a lot of charm, which is really all the role requires.

I find this casting strange but interesting. Maria doesn't always have to be a soprano (Mary Martin wasn't) even though that's the standard casting nowadays, so I don't think Underwood's vocal range will be that much of a problem. I think she will be able handle the singing very well, but it's the acting I'm more concerned about. She could end up being surprisingly good in the role, or not, but we never know until we see it. I will be watching out of curiosity.
I wonder now, since they have a big name in the role of Maria, if they will fill out the rest of the cast with Broadway people.

I don't think Studio 8H is big enough to do a LIVE production of "The Sound of Music" with the large, lavish sets and mountainous backgrounds it will require. It will most likely be broadcast live from a movie studio sound stage in Los Angeles (much like the Stephen Frears/George Clooney live broadcast of "Fail Safe"). Since NBC owns Universal, it will probably be done on one (or two) of the large sound stages at their lot in Universal City.

Of course she couldn't care less! This isn't even a movie remake- it's a live-in-the-studio stunt performance of the show in SOME form or other. Whether it'll be the original production with "An Ordinary Couple" and no puppet show, or the revised version with "I Have Confidence" and "Something Good," whether we'll get the long Nun Chorales, all of this has yet to be seen.
But we'll have cute kids singing "Do, a deer, a female deer," probably some slightly awkward choreography for "Sixteen," and at least one Broadway star and movie/television star rounding out the cast with names.

Here's what Carrie had to say about the upcoming broadcast:
Quote:
"It's a giant challenge, which I appreciate," this week's PEOPLE cover girl, who is currently in the midst of her Blown Away tour, says of the new production, which is slated to air later this year around the holidays. "Everybody keeps saying, 'People don't do this anymore, singing live!' "
As for following Julie Andrews, who earned an Oscar nomination for her role in the box-office blockbuster 1965 original, the country superstar, 30, says she's not trying to fill the Hollywood legend's shoes.
The British star "just has this royal air," says Underwood, who has never met Andrews: "It would be like you're beneath her!"
Underwood adds, "I think once people tune in and realize that [our version] is not a remake, they won't compare it to the movie.
End quote.

Okay, yes, but it's not an either/or situation. There are plenty of actresses or even singers who'd have made great Marias on stage, or if not great, they might have been appropriately cast. The only positive thing I can say about this casting is that sometimes unexpected casting leads to great things (I never thought I'd fall head over heels over Sutton Foster's Reno Sweeney).

Well, you know, it's a year off, so maybe (in the spirit of good family entertainment values, y'know), we should provide NBC with our own take on how they can take this country singing sensation and make it all work in THE SOUND OF MUSIC. I mean, sure, it'll mean making a few changes here and there, but heck, the Met does this all the time and no one cares (well, too much).
So... THUH SOUYND UH MEWYSIC (as adapted from some play by a couple of Yankees who should git down on their knees and thank God for this great land)
ACT ONE. Scene 1: The Abby Trailer Park, high in the hills of West Virginia. The local Baptist ladies are all working away on their upcoming bake sell and truck raffle, but no one can find Mary (who makes the best corn muffins in the county). Frustrated, they commiserate over a Long Island Iced Tea or two and sing "Whut do yew do with a prohblem liyke Mary?"
Scene 2: Up in the hills, Mary picks her way past a few not so well hidden stills as she sings "Thuh HIYLLLLLS 'R' UH-LIVE with the sound of Banjos!"
Scene 3: Mary returns home, only to find she's been summoned before Abby Superior, the trailer park's matriarch. Abby tells her that she's lined up a real sweet job babysitting for the local circuit court appeals judge (who's up for re-election). Mary, being of course a welfare case, balks at the idea because it means her government subsistence check will be taken away, but then she sees a picture of the judge and decides that she needs to get in there, pull herself up by her bra straps, and help make America great once more, which leads into the passionately patriotic number (backed up by an offstage chorus of Marines) "Eagles all weepy and grunts at attention / Stars and stripes on everything too numerous to mention / Trusting in Reagan and all that he sings / These are a few of my favourite things!"
I'm tellin' ya, we got a gold mine here!!!

You're joking, Sean, but I actually did an entire summer of TSOM in Northern Georgia in 1975. Maria and the Captain were cast in New York, but the kids came from the local Baptist church and sounded just as you would imagine.
Based on Underwood's concert Youtube of the title song and her singing of "Getting to Know You" when she was on AI, I doubt they can find a child in all of Georgia who sings R&H worse than she does. I don't know why; maybe it's the struggle to sing straight tones. But Underwood really seems at sea with the genre.

Didn't they consider Taylor Swift for Les Miserables? It's all about putting popular faces out there. What bugs me is, when I go see a movie musical, I'd actually like to see somebody in the lead role who can sing and act. They seem to think if it's a well-known actor, we're all so stupid we will accept a bad singer. That has been done over and over.
I'd like Carrie a lot more if she would just stop yelling. Sing the song already. She doesn't need to scream it. She has a sound team who will make sure she is heard. And she is very wooden. And she marches across the stage. She just isn't graceful or a natural on a stage. Sometimes a singer who is a great performer will go further than a person with a better voice who can't perform.

Carrie's comment about how there won't be any comparisons because it's not a remake? Is she really that naive? But, let's give her a break. She may do very well. She might be working on toning down the accent, and it's acting - so she won't be awkward on the stage because the directors will have blocked her every move. Nobody's going to let this girl fail.
At least she has the guts to get out there and try it.

Carrie also recently said that she'd start vocal training and script memorization in June because "The Sound of Music isn't country." She's said several times that as soon as her tour ends in May the rest of her year will be spent almost solely on TSOM.
BTW she had the flu in the live Sound of Music video that's on youtube. You can tell her voice is hoarse in some parts.

The recent record of televised musicals on network tv is not great. Was the last one "Once Upon A Mattress"? We had the deadly dull Music Man (2003) with Tony winner Matthew Broderick (and Kristin Chenowith). South Pacific (2001)with Glenn Close and Harry Connick Jr. Jason Alexander in Bye Bye Birdie
Then there were two "originals" neither of which I saw:
"Gepetto" (2000) with songs by Stephen Schwartz
And Xmas Carol (2004) with songs by Mencken/Ahrens and Kelsey Grammer (Scrooge), Jason Alexander (Marley), Jennifer Love Hewitt (Emily), Ruthie Henshall (Scrooges Mother), Jane Krakowski (Christmas Past), Jesse L. Martin (Christmas Present), Geraldine Chaplin (Christmas Future
So, no high hopes for Sound of Music, just based on what has transpired.

There are some differences in the stage show. For one thing Rolf doesn't reveal to the Nazis where the Von Trapps are hiding. He keeps it a secret because he still has some feelings for Liesl. Before that she introduces Maria to him at the mansion before he upsets her. Maria also apparently leaves the family after having a conversation with Brigitta rather than the Baroness. Some lines are also different. One example would be when Maria explains to the Captain what he does not know about the children, Marta is the one she does not know much about rather than Louisa. She says that Louisa wants to have fun and the Captain has just got to let her fun. I think when they did the movie, they either thought the audiences would not know about Louisa either or they thought it would've been bad for Maria to say she knew nothing about a 7 year old.

In the original Broadway production (which I assume will be live televised version) Maria sings MY FAVORITE THINGS in the Mother Abbess's office, just before she sends Maria to serve Captain von Trapp's family as governess to his seven children. THE LONELY GOATHERD is sung in the children's bedroom to comfort them during the storm. DO RE MI is sung in the living room of Captain von Trapp's house, shortly after Maria introduces herself to the children. The party is held in the first act and the children sing SO LONG FAREWELL. CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN is sung at the end of the first act.

That's the original Broadway, but several revivals since have changed elements- some inspired by the criticisms that claimed the film was structurally stronger than the original stage show's script, others for other reasons.
I would imagine what we get on NBC will be as much influenced by later revivals as by the original staging and licensed script.

In some versions of the musical, "The Lonely Goatherd" is sung at the music festival. But in most recent revivals it is sung in the garden right after the Captain asks Maria to stay.

This article says it will be a live holiday broadcast. It's a film. What does that mean? Will they have a person or people introducing it live? Where will they be?
Confused at how a film gets broadcast live.

CarlosAlberto, I had the same thought as you wrote. But then I saw this sentence in the article:
"The network announced today that the film, executive produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, will premiere on Thursday, December 5, 2013."

Oh yes, you need to understand that BWW articles are riddled with goofs and misinformation. No one proofreads them. There is a whole tumblr feed dedicated to the best ones.
So I could see how that would be confusing.

Personally, I think this has the possibility for being a huge hit for NBC. Carrie has a very strong and loyal fan base on top of the fact that people will watch it for the fact that the show itself is a classic.

Can somebody tell Miss Underwood that "The Lonely Goatherd" is not a song about bestiality in Appalachia?
