According to --
http://filmmusicreporter.com/2012/11/16/republic-records-to-release-les-miserables-soundtrack/
It is a one-disc album and will most likely include only the songs and key recitatives, not the complete libretto and score?

Interesting... Wish they would have a complete album. Pretty smart releasing it the day before the release. More than likely, some website will have an exclusive first-listen link unless they don't want anything spoiled until the week of the release.

At the moment, from what I've seen of film, and to be fair I've only seen the trailers and other footage available, I can't say I'm that excited about listening to the soundtrack. It seems the way the film has been made that the songs may well work in action (vocals recorded live, some speak-singy, not all the classics belted or as 'strong' as we've come to know them, songs more 'character-driven') but taken out of that context and simply listened to, would they really stand up alone?
I really enjoy the movie of Sweeney Todd (is that something to be embarrassed about?!) but I've listened to the soundtrack maybe once, because as we know, some of the vocals and arrangements are questionable - but they work better in situ - but not as simply a recording.
Hopefully I'll be proved wrong, after all, wasn't it Cameron Macintosh that said he wanted the film to be definitive? Maybe the soundtrack will also be?

Worse case scenario, if they don't produce a double. I'll just wait till the DVD comes out and rip it as an audio CD.
But you do have an excellent point there, if most of the bits inbetween are speak/sing, I don't think it would be all that great to just listen to on it's own.

The film, from the previews have shown me, has cut a lot (if not all) of the musical dialogue moments. Instead, they've retained the songs that work more like an aside, soliloquy, etc. There may only be one CD's worth of music in the film.
In all honesty I think the "full" score for the film would be like this:
Prologue: Work Song ("Look Down")
Prologue: Jean Valjean's Soliloquy (What Have I Done?)
At the End of the Day
I Dreamed a Dream
Lovely Ladies
Who Am I
The Confrontation
The new song for Jean Valjean... my guess is it goes here?
Castle on a Cloud
Master of the House
Look Down (MAYBE)
Stars
Red and Black
Do You Hear the People Sing
In My Life
A Heart Full of Love
One Day More
On My Own
Little People (But the uber short version, if at all)
A Little Fall of Rain
Drink With Me
Bring Him Home
Dog Eat's Dog
Javert's Soliloquy
[I have a feeling Turning will be cut as you don't NEED it in the film]
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables
Wedding Chorale/Beggars at the Feast
Valjean's Death/Do You Hear the People Sing? (Reprise)
When you condense the score down to just those songs, they'd easily fit on one disc.

DEClarke, did you not see the screenplay when it was posted here?
*spoilers*
Most of the recitative stuff is in, and there are actually added moments to clarify some bits that aren't in the stage version. "Turning" is in, "I Dreamed a Dream" is after "Lovely Ladies," "Do You Hear the People Sing" comes after "One Day More," and the new song for Valjean, which is called "Suddenly," is after "The Waltz of Treachery."

I think that is probably true in terms of the speak-singing that we heard in some of the trailers and such, but for me, the reason to be excited about it is to hear Aaron Tveit singing "Do you hear the people sing?". That alone is reason enough for me to get the CD even though I love the complete symphonic recording and would always prefer complete recordings to "highlights" ones when it comes to cast recordings or soundtracks.

I don't think you need Turning (unless they do a truncated version), Castle on Cloud will most likely be truncated, they can cut Grantaire's solo from Drink With Me, Little People (agree it can be cut down to a few seconds), Lovely Ladies will probably be truncated, Beggars at the Feast can be shortened, I could do without Javert's Soliloquy but it's Russell Crowe so they will keep that in the film. You didn't mention The Waltz of Treachery -- they are going to want to keep that number in so they can highlight HBC and SBC.

I hope they don't cut Grantaire's solo from "Drink with Me." It's such a great little character moment- all the audience has ever seen of this student is that he's a drunken bum, and then out of nowhere he sobers up and points out a few things that no one seems to have thought of before. I really enjoyed the way this moment is portrayed in the current tour: Grantaire sings "Can it be you fear to die," and almost all of the men start to rush him as if they are insulted, only to stop when he continues, realizing he has a point. I don't remember how the original staging went (and wish I did).
Anyhow, I get why they might cut it, but I'd much rather see "Turning" cut down (and it has been for the most part in productions since the 10th anniversary concert), and certainly "Little People" cut down. I'm not sure if there's really anything that could be removed from "Waltz of Treachery"- it's already pretty short as is.

I'm not the mp3 type. Nope. Maybe I have hyper sensitive satellite ears and can detect details that most normal humans can't, like a dog. But I can often hear this awful bubbling noise within a track on most mp3s. So I vowed NEVER to purchase them and go for a factory-pressed CD instead.
But I'm also a very, very impatient mofo. One of my many qualities and charms to go along with my nit-pickiness, detail-obsession, wordiness, self-importantness, repetitiveness, monotony, and passion to spare. Omg, I'm such an amazing person!!!
At any rate, this lack of patience has made my unbending principals bend...a bit, and I am presently downloading cheapo mp3 Les Miserables soundtrack album as I pound on these keys, because I wish not to wait for snail mail.
"The time is here! Will I give this new album much hatred or cheer? Let us take to the phones with no doubt in our hearts, with a jubilant John Cameron orchestration it will come together once and for all, or this movie will fall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
That's me being midget-jolras with a passion for his orch cause.

I cannot imagine what effect it will have on me once I see it visually. Samantha Barks' "On My Own" is absolutely magnificent! The orchestrations sound absolutely stunning. So far, I like it but don't love it.
Anne Hathaway's "I Dreamed A Dream" is just fantastic. Honestly in a different league than every other track I've heard so far. Gut-wrenching, even on CD. I'm so glad she's getting such great notices for this and is proving all of the nay-sayers wrong.

No. It is the Bishop in her place but the lines Eponine usually sings aren't all sung by the Bishop. He comes in @ "...once was spoken, to love another person is to see the face of God."
I like the change because it's a good change.
That doesn't mean I think the way it is done on stage with Eponine was bad, flawed, or didn't make sense. It was very well done on stage, too. Had they kept it that way, I would've liked it just as much.
Nothing is wrong with change, and I welcome it when it makes sense and there is a compelling reason or need to have it. This qualifies, considering the immense amount of influence the Bishop had on Valjean's life, and it is beautifully woven in.

Honestly, I don't know if we are going to see a complete cast recording of this, at least in the near future. It's obvious, as some predicted, that the audio is basically ripped straight from the movie. Their logic, I'm assuming, is that a complete recording would basically be the audio of the entire film (since it is 99% sung-through). So, in a way, I see where they are coming from, especially with wanting to save some things. I mean, otherwise they would be giving us the entire film without visuals.

I'm endlessly amused by Cohen's rendition of "Master of the House." It's brilliant.
I wasn't expecting for him to do anything redefining (a mostly tired, false claim used for marketing purposes that so many fall for) and he doesn't, but a little is always more when mixed with taste and respect for a work's integrity.
There's a much longer word on that, but I'll stick to one thing at a time for now.
I LOVE his ambiguous accent! At first, I thought it sounded French, and it does in places. But it also sounds decidedly Spanish in more places, suggests American in others, and an unmistakably Cockney variation pops up during "One Day More." And somehow, works! And works well. You'd think it would be a painful trainwreck, but even I, the most vocal commentator on the lack of cohesion playing a role in the new stage version's orchestrations mess of a sound, am not bothered by it in the least. But that's because, unlike that horrid concoction, he maintains--either intentionally or by accident--the character's essence. And it doesn't take a full bodied, specific accent to denote essence but merely well placed cues.
I've always lectured on how I prefer a single piano adaptation of the original orchestration over the multi-instrument mess that has replaced that definitive John Cameron sound, making everyone think I'm out of my mind for wanting one piano over the 14 member requirement needed to play the new thing. But that's for another day, even if it does illustrate the point I'm making here: that essence is where it's at. Yes, we are sophisticated enough to fill in the rest with our imaginations with minimal effort and have it turn out satisfyingly good, but people have long lost faith in themselves; a result of losing touch with the art form and its theatrical roots, and distressingly, want it spelled out.
I can't even determine if this is a strategic thing on Cohen's part or a stroke of luck borne out of an inability to master an intended accent, that ends up providing the basic elements that are needed to satisfy the character's inherent essence. I've always considered the very, very popular argument that Thenardier needs to have a Cockney accent because it's what best works to be a bunch of hogwash.
