I hope it can be appreciated for what it is, because whatever it is will pale in comparison to the movie. I'd like to see them go younger than O'Hara; I don't think I'd buy her as a novice. Maybe Laura Osnes? Nathan Fillion as Captain von Trapp?

Also, since they say the singing will be live, any 'bankable name' will have to be able to deliver.

PalJoey-I have a feeling she's going to get it. She she did the Carnegie Hall event and will be Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, I think she's really a good choice.

They can cast bigger names as the Captain and Elsa, since they are less vocally challenging. But, for Maria you need someone who can sing.

This is exciting news!!

No offense, but Laura Benanti is kind of old (yea, I know that Mary Martin was pushing 50). Maria is supposed to be between 20 and 22. This is what I think:

Maria- Sierra Boggess, Laura Osnes, Connie Fisher, Ashley Brown
Captain- John Barrowman or James Marsden
Elsa- Laura Benanti or Kelli O'Hara
Max- Chris Sieber
Mother Abbess- Rebecca Luker

Just throwing out suggestions. I've never done one of these casting things. Haha.

Christopher Plummer was 34 when he played the role, even though the Captain is supposed to be 40-45. The real Captain and Maria were 47 and 22 respectively when they married.

I think they might tap Smash for some of these roles. How about Brian D'Arcy James as the Captain??? Debra Messing as Elsa? And Christian Borle as Max? Don't know who they want as the Mother Abbess (I know who I want, that's for sure. In a perfect world, Julie Andrews would still be able to sing and to do that role. How about Marni Nixon? Can she still sing that song???)

I really love the idea of a live broadcast of the full stage show.

As far as casting, I also love the idea of the Captain being established and Maria being "introduced" at least to TV audiences. Osnes would be great! If they could get a film star for the Captain, that would be great, too. My go-to choice of late is Robert Downey, Jr. But I could also see someone like Jude Law (with graying temples ala Christopher Plummer).

As far as the Baroness, as previously suggested and if she'd do it, I think Gwyneth Paltrow would be wonderful.

And Goth, it doesn't sound like they're cutting any of the stage show songs. That's what will separate this from the film adaptation---a chance to see a Broadway-caliber production as originally written.

I sure hope it is a soundstage... although pulling it off live, with all the stuff in SoM that is location-oriented, etc. is going to be tricky.

Am I going to get flamed for suggesting Sutton for Maria? She's becoming a big enough name off the stage that it might give the production some mojo. I also like Sierra Boggess, and thought the poster that mentioned Katharine Jenkins is on to something... although I worry she'd be too operatic.

After seeing Osnes in her Cafe Carlyle show last night, I whole-heartedly vote for her as Maria. She truly seems like "Broadway's American Sweetheart" and would do so wonderfully in this role.

I'd love for them to cast someone from the Broadway side for the Captain, but perhaps someone who has some TV credibility, like Brian d'Arcy James. I wonder if NBC would like to use him after his "Smash" appearances.

You could easily cast "famous" people as Max and/or Elsa.

I think it's a great idea, if it's done well. My vote would be for Osnes. There's plenty of room to cast well known names around her, even a role like Rolfe. I can't, off the top of my head, think of anyone I'd jump at to play the Captain. Why not just throw Hugh Jackman in there, he seems capable of pretty much anything these days. Or Patrick Wilson. They have both sung R&H scores before.

The only other songs done outside are Sixteen Going On Seventeen, How Can Love Survive, The Sound of Music reprise, No Way To Stop It, An Ordinary Couple, and the finale. I guess I still don't fully understand what the producers are going for here when they say it'll be live, and some here are saying it wouldn't be on stage, so I'm having trouble picturing it in my head, but I'm excited nonetheless.

Breaking News: NBC & Craig Zadan/Neil Meron to Present Live Broadcast of THE SOUND OF MUSIC!
Posted by GavestonPS 2012-06-29 20:37:21

I understand the emphasis on "live" with SOM as a means of explaining why scenes don't take place in Alpine meadows.

But on the whole, am I the only one who couldn't care less whether a TV show is "live" or not? It's still coming to me through various pieces of electronic equipment. And either they'll flub their lines or they won't--either way, I've seen it before.

I was actually excited years ago when ER announced their live episode. I wrongly assumed they would write the episode as if it were a one-hour theater play, with set changes only during commercial breaks. That promised to be interesting. But instead they merely wrote a regularly episode and ran from shot to shot. What difference does it make to me how much running they do off-camera?

bob3 for this, it could be a bit different. They need someone who is going to nail every scene in one take, because that is all they get, one take. That suggests a lot more Broadway talent like the live musicals of decades past. Hathaway is good, she can really sing, but we have only seen her do a number at a time. This is live, from beginning to end, we need someone who is used to doing that and able to deliver. NBC doesn't want to waste a million bucks or more on a crap shoot. They need to know that the production will turn out as close to flawless as possible. You will only get that from folks who are used to doing eight shows a week in a live setting.

jimmycurry01, imagine yourself as a sales executive at NBC and TRY SELLING THAT COMMENT TO POTENTIAL ADVERTISERS!

NBC is 99% more likely to cast Adele as Maria than they are Laura Osnes.

This isn't HBO or PBS, it is commercial television. It doesn't matter what NBC wants, it is about what the advertisers are willing to pay top dollar for (and if you think otherwise you are very naive about the relationship between commercial television and the advertising business).

I'd so be in if this featured Anne Hathaway as Maria, Michael Fassbender as the Captain and Paltrow as the Baroness, that'd make this quite an event! What a cast.
Anne Hathaway did CARNIVAL at Encores! and got raves (including a love letter from the Times), not to mention her other musical theatre roles at places like Papermill. She definitely has the theatre background, she has the Julie Andrews connection with PRINCESS' DIARIES, she'd bring in audiences, and she'd be a knockout in the part.
How about Sarah Hyland as Liesl?

Maria: Anne Hathaway, Mandy Moore, Amy Adams (although she's pushing 40)
Captain: Hugh Jackman, James Marsden
Elsa: Gywneth Paltrow, Brooke Shields
Max: Victor Garber? David Hyde Pierce?

Can we keep Paltrow as far away from any of this as possible? I don't get why people would want her even for a small role, she's hideous.
I could see Anne Hathaway, I still say Jackman or Patrick Wilson for the Captain.

Before Connie Fisher was given the role, via a TV talent casting contest, Andrew Lloyd Webber was supposed to have offered the role of Maria for its revival in London to Scarlett Johansson! Presumably she can sing and has that spunky freshness of the character.

Maria - Scarlett Johansson
Capt. Von Trapp - Hugh Jackman

This is network TV. I don't think big movie star names are very likely--at least not a cast full of them. I think the "names" in this production will most likely be TV stars, and very possibly from NBC shows. I also don't think you can count out Laura Osnes. She started out on an NBC talent show, and if there are enough recognizable people around her, I think it's possible. Otherwise they could go with Katharine McPhee (although I would prefer Osnes).

To be perfectly honest, I can't answer that.
We all know that in her days she has brilliantly performed even more challenging numbers in Mame, Dear World and Sweeney Todd, but lately I only heard her singing Liaisons, Beauty and the Beast, and Not While I'm Around, which are not as challenging vocally.
Still, to my mind she'll be great in the role. We haven't seen her on TV in ages and that could be the perfect opportunity.

If they can't get a name like Paltrow for Elsa, I'd love to see Rachel York in that role. Maybe David Hyde Pierce as Max?

I hope this will be casted like Zadan and Merons past Television musicals (with the exception that it's live) which had a fabulous variety Broadway/Film/Television stars mostly Broadway talent. And with this being Live I think they'll get as much Broadway talent as they can get. If it's anything like they did Annie then it will be one stellar production.

bobs the sound of music is possibly the best known and most loved musical of all time. Whenever a network shows it around the holidays good ratings are practically guaranteed. So i would say it probably wouldn't make much difference in ratings if they cast Ann Hathaway, Megan Hilty, Laura Benanti, or Amy Adams. People love this show it's a guaranteed sell no matter who plays Maria. Does that mean we'll have an all no name cast. Of course not, but to think Maria has to a star is just wrong.

Well bobs3, we can take a look at some of their most recent work. Smash has Angelica Houston who is a star but hasn't done much in years and Debra Messing. The rest of the cast is rounded out by Broadway performers. The Music Man remake was pretty much all Broadway performers. Annie, aside from Kathy Bates was pretty much all Broadway performers. They were able to sell all of those with casts that were very Broadway, and they were able to do multiple takes and didn't have to sing live.

I would imagine it is EXACTLY that comment that is being sold to potential advertisers. Real talent, one take, all live, and with a title that will sell itself.

You know how they sell this to advertisers...you are doing a live broadcast of THE SOUND OF MUSIC!!!!! It's one of the most, if not THE most, recognized musicals of all time.

You don't need a name for Maria, you need a talent. I completely agree with casting a "name" Captain von Trapp and some of the other parts as "names" and doing "Introducing as Maria....Laura Osnes." How can anyone think it wouldn't work. It's The Sound of Music!

I'm also for Osnes as Maria and Victoria Clark as the Mother Abbess. Thinking of her singing Climb Evr'y Mountain is already bringing goose bumps to my arms!

That made me think of the awful thought of Lea Michele as Maria, what a disaster that would be.
I really hope Katharine MacPhee is not picked to play Maria, I wouldn't mind seeing other TV stars like Megan Mullally or Lisa Kudrow as the Baroness, David Hyde Pierce or Joel McHale as the uncle, Christopher Meloni as the Captain and Osnes as Maria

I also think it's safe to say McPhee won't be playing Maria. All the critics pointed out she was one of smashs biggest problems, and many of the shows fans don't even like her. I would say if we were to get a smash cast member as Maria it would be Hilty.

"I am so intrigued by the idea of Lisa Kudrow as Elsa right now."

I think she would need a bit of work. Her voice isn't quite cultivated enough to play Elsa. She lacks gravitas for the role, even though I think she is a brilliant actress.

At the risk of agreeing with Goth, his assessment of Kudrow as Elsa does not seem to be completely incorrect.

Elsa needs a bit of icy-ness. She is one of the antagonists in the show, but must never come across as an antagonist. The role needs to put across a lot and doesn't have much to work with.

I think Kudrow is a brilliant actress, but there are actresses closer in type to what's needed and I imagine the ramp up time for this show will be very tight.

Exactly, in Web Therapy if i had to use one word to describe her character it would be icy. I would say Elsa would be a walk in the park for her, and Web Therapy is exactly why.

Also watch Kudrow's performance in THE OTHER WOMAN, I think she'd be great in the role. What other NBC talent (I imagine the network won't be considering people from other networks) would be right for the role? Jane Krakowski is the other person that comes to mind, but I wonder if she can pull off the icy part.

How do people feel about Hilty as Maria? I feel like she doesn't have the ingenue quality of the role, but I wonder how others feel about it.

If you mean the naivete and nervousness when you say ingenue quality i would say take a look at how she played Glinda. She's also wonderful around children, so that's for sure a plus. I predict a very warm yet assertive Maria.

This seems such an odd, odd project, even for a network as desperate as NBC. I can't imagine it would not be difficult to get a big star to a) take the risk of playing such iconic roles b) doing it live. It'll take a whole night of prime. And, man the commercials are going to throw off the flow. And, will it be done in front of an audience?

Remember that horrible On Golden Pond with Andrews and Plummer?

The show might air Christmas 2013 and Zadan and Meron are very close to finding their Maria. I'm guessing they might be casting an unknown to the television & film world.

ETA: I corrected what I meant by an unknown.

They can EASILY cast someone like Laura Osnes as Maria. The lead of Hairspray and Rock of Ages (I know, it flopped) were "unknowns" with celeb-packed supporting parts. Get Laura for Maria and Tina Fey for the Baroness, Alec Baldwin for Max, etc etc. Btw those weren't actual suggestions so much as "in the NBC family" gettable suggestions.

Hmmmmm wonder if they will air it from 8H at 30 Rock. I know there has been talk of doing live musical from there for a while. That is where 30 Rock goes to shoot their live broadcasts. It is set up for that because of SNL.

If Sierra Boggess wasn't already committed to Prince of Braodway, she would be wonderful as Maria!

My Cast:
Maria-Joanna Garcia-Swisher (if she doesn't sing then maybe Katherine McPhee)
Captain von Trapp-Tony Goldwyn
Elsa-Brooke Sheilds
Max-Alec Baldwin
Lisel-Lucy Hale
Rolf-Darren Criss

If this actually happens, and I don't think it will without a STAR attached, it will be done in Los Angeles. Much like the Stephen Frears/George Clooney live production of FAIL SAFE in 2000, they will need two sound stages (Fail Safe used Stage 15 and Stage 6 at Warner Bros. studio in Burbank) with lavish sets and multiple crews. Since 20th Century Fox still owns the film copyright one can assume it will be done at the Fox Studios in Century City. FAIL SAFE was a two hour (with commercials) production and was done live twice...once for the Eastern/Central time and once for Pacific/Mountain time. Since The Sound of Music will run 3 hours, the west coast feed will probably be prerecorded on tape (much like SNL).
