So I'll say Margaret in Light in the PIazza . although I'd love to see what she would do with Victor/Victoria too.

Rebecca Luker?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by givesmevoice 2011-07-25 12:07:43

Perhaps someone else can come up with a role for present-day Rebecca Luker, but I think that she could've made a wonderful Abigail Adams in 1776 (probably even around the time of the 1997 revival).
ETA: Scratch that: I'd love to see her really stretch her acting chops in a role like Margaret Johnson.

Pauline Collins

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-07-25 18:35:19

AC, I wasn't aware of Huston's work on stage. But broadwayworld.com (what a resource) says that she was Francesca Annis's understudy as Ophelia, and an ensemble member, in Tony Richardson's Hamlet starring Nicol Williamson in 1969.

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by AC126748 2011-07-25 18:45:10

Wow, she would have only been 18 years old at the time of that production. I wonder if she ever went on for Annis.

Pauline Collins as Lettice Douffet in LETTICE AND LOVAGE.

Sigourney Weaver?

Alan Rickman as Barabbas in THE JEW OF MALTA.

Sinead Cusack?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-07-26 14:16:06

Did Cherry Orchard remind you of Sinead?

I'd love to see her as something completely unexpected (like Madame Arcati) but I'll play it safe and offer Agnes in A Delicate Balance (to Jeremy's Tobias might be interesting).

Claire Bloom?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by AC126748 2011-07-26 16:06:19

You're quite right that it did; what performances she and Beale (and Hall) gave! One of my most memorable nights at the theatre. And I actually LOVE the idea of her as Madame Arcati (and as Agnes).

Has Bloom ever played Queen Margaret in RICHARD III? I think she'd be ideal.

I'll advance the game with Cusack's Chekhovian daughter, Rebecca Hall.

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-07-26 18:56:53

Don't know if Bloom has ever played Margaret.

Wow. Rebecca Hall. Have you seen the Nicole Holofcener movie Please Give, AC? She's terrific in it. I'm gonna stick with a theme here and say she'd be a wonderful Ruth to Sinead's Madame Arcati, maybe with Matthew Madfadyen as Charles and Romola Garai as Elvira.

(An all Anglo production of Blithe Spirit would sure to be controversial. Thank goodness Sinead is Irish..... JUST KIDDING FOLKS!)

Thomas Sadoski?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by AC126748 2011-07-26 19:15:47

PLEASE GIVE was one of my favorite films last year. Holofcener is quite the talent. Hall and Amanda Peet blew me away.

I love the idea of BLITHE SPIRIT with a YOUNG cast. The way they cast the recent Broadway revival, Charles, Ruth, and Elvira could have been Madame Arcati's cousins.

Sadowski as Jimmy Porter in LOOK BACK IN ANGER.

Bill Nighy?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-07-26 19:20:48

I loved the movie too. Peet was also wonderful in it.

Rachel York as Mrs. Wilkinson

Elisabeth Moss?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by AC126748 2011-07-27 13:18:58

Just a supplementary post here. Someone over on ATC suggested that Donna Murphy would be a great replacement for Tyne Daly in MASTER CLASS. I find myself somewhat obsessed with the idea now. Murphy seems ideal to me:

--She's closer in age than almost anyone who's played her in a major production (save Patti LuPone, who was the exact same age when she played Callas that Callas was when she taught at Juilliard)
--Her strong, attractive features are similar to Callas's
--We know from her performances that she can be both temperamental and nurturing, strong but also subtle.

I love the idea personally. Thoughts?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by givesmevoice 2011-07-27 13:41:06

I've never seen Master Class, but am pretty familiar with the show, and I think Murphy could be incredible. There are times when her name is thrown out for a role that I have a hard time imagining her in the part (Rose is the best example of this), but know that if I actually saw her, she would blow me away. So while she's not the first person to come to mind for the part, I'm sure she would be incredible.

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-07-29 05:28:29

No doubt Donna would ace Callas.

I'd be curious what Moss would do with Sonia in Uncle Vanya, although I wish I would have been able to see her as Martha in The Children's Hour in London.

Next: your mission, should you accept it, is to cast the following two people together in a play, movie remake, or book adaptation for film or screen (feel free to tell us who you want to direct, etc.)

Christoph Waltz and Frances O'Connor

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by AC126748 2011-07-29 08:09:59

It's almost too easy for them: George and Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. They're both electrifying performers, able to seamlessly shift their emotions at a whim. I'd love to see them do it either on stage or on film. (I want O'Connor back on stage)

I had never considered Moss for Sonia, but hearing it, it sounds pretty ideal. Perhaps her MAD MEN co-star Christina Hendricks could play Yelena.

Next two: Vera Farmiga and Adrien Brody.

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-07-29 08:46:27

Cool, AC, I didn't particularly have anything in mind but was curious what the response would be. Virginia Woolf is a very cool idea. I also see them as Torvald and Nora big time.

Farmiga and Brody as Amalia and Gennaro in De Filippo's Napoli Milionaria.

Frances McDormand and Holly Hunter

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by AC126748 2011-07-29 08:57:22

The first thing that came to my mind was Schiller's MARY STUART: McDormand as the fiery Mary; Hunter as the placid but forceful Elizabeth. But then I thought I might like to see them in DON CARLOS instead, with Hunter as Elisabeth of Valois and McDormand as Princess Eboli. They're both long in the tooth, but it wouldn't be the first time that happened.

I could also see them in THE WINTER'S TALE (McDormand as Paulina, Hunter as Hermione).

Bill Irwin and Alfred Molina

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-07-29 09:40:01

Wow - although I certainly agree with your age caveat! I'm tempted to go further and say esas son completemente sobre los Pirineos Araganoses para Don Carlos. Mary Stuart, of course, though it's difficult for me to imagine anyone other than McTeer and Walter in those roles at this point, so in awe of their work there. They're perfect for those roles in Winter's Tale.

I'd love to see Irwin and Molina in a film of Bellow's Humboldt's Gift, Irwin as Charlie (a bit of stretch but I think he could do it) and Molina as Humboldt.

David Greenspan and Harriet Harris

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by AC126748 2011-07-29 10:50:24

This is not a show I particularly like, but I could see Harriet Harris in the title role of THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, with Greenspan as Man in Chair. They'd bring wit and layers that are missing from the musical itself.

Rebecca Hall and Eve Best?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-07-29 13:09:30

So many possibilities!

Most excitiing to me would be Best as Solange and Hall as Claire in The Maids (perhaps with Jolie Richardson as Madame).

Also worth considering:

Best as Olivia and Hall as Viola in Twelfth Night
Best as Sarah and Hall as Mandy in Time Stands Still
Best as Lotty and Hall as Rose in Enchanted April
Best as the Marquise de Merteuil and Hall as Mme. de Tourvel in
Les Liaisons
Best as June and Hall as Childie in Killing of Sister George
Best as Masha and Hall as Irina....

etc., etc., etc.

Raul Esparza & Cheno?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-07-30 14:09:50

Jan Maxwell as Hesione and Michelle Pawk as Corine in Triumph of Love

OR BETTER YET: Maxwell as Desiree and Michelle as Charlotte!!

Don Cheadle and Jennifer Coolidge

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by AC126748 2011-07-30 15:06:43

Coolidge and Cheadle as Hannah and William Warren / Diana and Sidney Nichols / Gert and Stu Franklyn in CALIFORNIA SUITE.

(Speaking of Pawk in TRIUMPH OF LOVE, I saw her as Hesione in the original run. I'm not sure if she replaced Betty Buckley or covered her during a vacation, but she was exquisite, perhaps even better than Buckley.)

Since one of my previous challenges got lost in a shuffle, I'll ask again: Kevin Kline and S. Epatha Merkerson?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-07-31 10:34:28

Thought I already responded AC but it doesn't look like it took. Kline and Merkerson as Willy and Linda Loman.

Joanna Lumley and Tom Courtenay

PERFECT Casting Game

Now you're talking, AC! And, while I have you, here's hoping you enjoy your birthday celebration at the Marquis! I'll be center row k in less than two weeks btw.

I'd buy a full price ticket to see Chalfant and Atkins play checkers. But I'd much rather see Eileen as Cora to Kathleen's Arry in Morning's at Seven. Although each could no doubt ace any of Osborne's four sisters.

btw it's vile and heinous that Manville didn't get even an oscar nomination last year for Another Year.

next up: Katie Finneran and Gabriel Byrne

It's my second straight birthday I'll be spending with Bernadette! Last year, I got to see her on my actual birthday (August 22) in my favorite musical of all time, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (it was my fourth time seeing her and Stritch). This year it will be a week later, but I'll be seeing her in my second favorite musical--and, as I mentioned on the other thread, the first time I'm seeing a full production. Do let me know what you think when you see it next week!

btw it's vile and heinous that Manville didn't get even an oscar nomination last year for Another Year.

I couldn't agree more. She gave the best performance I saw all last year, in the best film of the year. Simultaneously endearing and annoying, hilarious and heartbreaking--not the kind of performance any actor can just give. I felt the same outrage when Sally Hawkins was snubbed for her astounding performance in Leigh's HAPPY-GO-LUCKY.

To the matter at hand: ten years ago I would have said Finneran as Chrissy and Byrne as Al in David Rabe's In the Boom Boom Room. Today, I'm going to say Mother Courage and The Cook in Mother Courage and Her Children.

Next two: Amy Morton and John Hawkes?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-08-03 20:59:49

Hawkes as Shannon to Morton's Hannah (although she'd probably nail Maxine as well) in Night of the Iguana.

Karen Olivo and Lin-Manuel Miranda

PERFECT Casting Game

Olivo as Titania and Miranda as Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

David Hyde Pierce and Christine Baranski

Pierce as Sidney and Baranski as Helga in Deathtrap

Jane Horrocks and Campbell Scott

PERFECT Casting Game

If jane could ditch the british accent i could see her and scott doing a more comedic spin on the kennedys, very comedic in fact. With horrocks as jackie and scott as rfk.
Judy Davis and sherie rene scott?

PERFECT Casting Game

Thanks for getting us up and running again, Random!

I've got four ideas:

Davis as June to Scott's Childie in Killing of Sister George.
Davis as Nancy to Scott's Sarah in Seascape.
Davis as Thelma to Scott's Jessie in 'night, Mother.
Davis as Toby to Scott's Evie - or maybe the other way around - in The Gingerbread Lady.

Maybe these could run in rep.

Chip Zien and Evan Pappas

Game On, Random!

"L'amour, L'amour!"

A new musical version of The Women.

In much expanded roles:

Vicky as Nancy Blake (think Ann Sheridan's narrator version in The Opposite Sex)
Patti as Dolly Dupuyster
Bernadette as Mrs. Morehead

and starring

Kelli O'Hara as Mary
Orfeh as Crystal
Julia Murney as Sylvia
Katie Finneran as Edith
Jane Krakowski, Laura Benanti, Karen Olivo or Christina Hendricks as Miriam (I just can't decide)
Michelle Federer as Peggy

and (in boxes)

Christine Baranski as the Countess de Lave
Reba McEntire as Lucy

* * *

Ed Norton and Ethan Hawke

PERFECT Casting Game

In all fairness henrik wouldn't hendricks, be more fun as crystal than miriam given as ,not to be unkind to orfeh, must be very attractive. Plus then you get the lovely tv star vs the musical star thing going on with her and o'hara.

I'm thinking (in a real casting switch up for this show but a fun one) Hawke as an old franklin shepard, and Norton as an older charlie. They'd have to have young counterparts but besides that...

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-10-13 09:19:16

I certainly thought of Christina as Crystal, Random, but I think Miriam would be a more interesting role for her, and also that Crystal might be a more interesting - if challenging - role for Orfeh. I might think Orfeh is hotter than you do perhaps but I also don't think Crystal has to be "attractive" in the stop traffic sense, just, with the help of theater magic, a mankiller, which I think Orfeh could pull off.

But I agree the musical comedy star versus tv star thing would resonate well with the rivalry dynamic in the play (taking this perhaps too far, Stephen then becomes per that paradigm loyal/disloyal ticket buying "audience")

I guess I fell for the idea of a knock down drag out cat fight between Murney and Hendricks as well.

Comparing Crystal to Miriam, I don't think Crawford was a particularly beautiful woman - on the other hand, Goddard (brilliant as the oriingal Miriam) was one of the most alluring women in the movies ever - and I like the idea of Hendricks as Miriam.

To me Orfeh is one of those women who can look amazing or very worn out. Although she might be too short for the role (I thought of Benanti as well but she seems like she might be too tall) she was the most interesting choice I could come up with it, although I have the feeling there must be a definitive choice who is eluding me. Scarlet Johansen maybe?

btw, I like the idea of Norton as Becket and Hawke as Henry II, which seems very ripe for revival IMO.

Your turn.

Yes but crawford had something orfeh dosn't youth. In short for this hendricks is the young sensual new girl at the macys counter. Orfeh is lucky to have the job at belks. though she could sing the **** out of the part allowing for some fun music where hendricks could not. ten years ago i could have bought it but hey, if they can make angela lansbury look sixy and bernadette fourty, who knows.... Orfeh could work.
Martha Plimpton and Megan Mullally, and if you really want a challenge benanti?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-10-13 18:09:14

OK, you win, I'm wrong, I just thought she'd be the best bitch of them all to tell you the truth. Although, I can't understand how Benanti as Crystal could be a problem - agewise at least - when she only played Gypsy, and pretty damned well, 3 years ago.

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-10-13 18:12:29

not to mention, Orfeh is 44. Crawford was then 34.

By 1939 versus current and screen versus stage standards, I'd say it's a draw on the youth front.

But, in any event, as I said, I surrender.

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by random person 112 2011-10-13 18:16:34

Oh no benanti would be a fun crystal because frankly benanti as many people around here acknowledge looks much younger and can play younger and have people believe it without casting around to make her look that way (example of casting around while not as good an example, peters in annie get your gun.) And i agree orfeh would be a fun bitch, only trouble is finding the right piece.... By the way your thing about stephen you hit the nail on the head my friend. On the bitch train while not full on bitch after hearing her strongest suit she would have been a fun amneris.

Random, I think by now we might have set a record for debating the casting of a show that doesn't even exist - even for BWW. But it has been fun!

Yes and i'm sorry but i'm horrible i write huge posts so then i never see the other person has responded. it's kinda funny. on another subject plimpton and mullally, and if you wish benanti?

For &*()'s sake, no need to apologize!

So, who again?

OK, Mullaley, PLimpton and who? Oh, Benanti.

Hmmm.... I feel, in keeping with all the cross-racial, cross-gender, cross-species threads I should think outside of the box. Big time.
So, I'll just say:

Megan as Don Quixote, Martha as Sancho and Laura as Rocinante.

But seriously folks....

ok, time for dinner, I'll come up with something later...

* * *

Ok, Laura as Annie, Martha as Sarah and Megan as Ruth (or some other combination thereof) in The Norman Conquests

Joan Allen, Gabriel Byrne, and if you like, Bill Pullman

Joan allen as Ranevskaya
Bill Pullman as gayev
and
Byrne as simeonov-pishchik In the cherry tree. My only concern is allen possibly looking too attractive or not being so far gone as to seem like an old aristocrat but i think she could do it.

Alice Ripley and Rosalind Russell?

PERFECT Casting Game

umm w your supposed to cast the two in the same piece not diffrent pieces and frankly headley dosn't have the pipes for sarah, she could never sing it without screaming every note and even then she'd proably be flat. boggess would be an amiable sarah brown though.

Well it's harder considering russell is deceased so a female adaption of weekend at bernies with rosalind as bernie the corpse and ripley transporting the body around.

Meryl streep?

PERFECT Casting Game
Posted by henrikegerman 2011-10-16 14:10:01

I previously said Meryl as Margaret of Anjou

Now I say that someone should finally make a film of de Beauvoir's The Mandarins with Meryl as Anne. Technically she might be too old, but it's unstated that Anne is de Beauvoir's prototype and would have been her age - late 30s - early 40s - right after the war when the story is set.

Guess I'm seeing Meryl as French these days, must be all that French cooking she just did.

Jennifer Ehle and Stephen Dillane, reunited

Kristin Chenoweth (I want to see if someone has the same idea as me here.)

Laura Bell Bundy as Glinda and Kate Shindle as Elphaba.
