Fascinating Listen - Mike Daisey Opens Up

AUDIO-Listen-to-THIS-AMERICAN-LIFEs-Mike-Daisey-Steve-Jobs-Retraction-20010101

I've just spent an hour GLUED to the podcast in which THIS AMERICAN LIFE's Ira Glass reveals how they discovered the falsehoods in Daisey's THE AGONY & ECSTASY OF STEVE JOBS on material that makes up both the play and broadcasts that they did based upon it.

The Public Theater issued a statement as well today, here.

It's a fascinating case in which material was presented as fully factual and up to levels of journalistic integrity that simply was not.

Fun FLASH on PETER...STARCATCHER Cast Page

The web geek in me generally HATES the (over)use of Flash on any web site, and especially those for Broadway shows. It's often unneeded, slow loading and also makes the site behave crankily on all Apple mobile devices.

All that said, after an eagle-eyed BWW Message Board-er spotted this VERY clever usage on the PETER AND THE STARCATCHER web site, well, it's excellent.

Cranky Sondheim?

Sondheim-West-End-Sad-20010101Talking to the London Times, Stephen Sondheim sounds off about much of the current state of commercial theatre, noting that while he can appreciate hits such as The Book of Mormon as a "fun college show", in response to the idea that this perceived trend could be permanent, Sondheim remarks: "I think so. Commercial theatre will only get more narrow as time goes on. There are so many forms of entertainment, theatre is becoming more marginalised. It's become ‘an event': you see Wicked on your anniversary. I don't think commercial theatre can fulfil a function as a constant feeding ground for emotions and thoughts."

For more of his thoughts, click here

Do you think he's cranky, overly critical or spot on?

A New Sondheim Musical?!?

The digital theatre world lit up earlier today (as did our live traffic meters) with the news, first reported by the London Evening Standard that Stephen Sondheim and David Ives have teamed up on a new musical, which is currently in the earliest phases of composition. According to the Standard: "Sondheim speaks of pushing forward and says he has "20 or 30 minutes" written of a new musical that he is collaborating on with American playwright David Ives, a New York regular little known in London."

We reached the legend himself who told us that "it's an idea I've had for a long time and that it springs indirectly from a moment in a play of David's."

What could this mean? Join our message board discussion on the subject here.

Beautiful Tribute to Howard Kissel

Long-time no blog, as my every free waking computer minute has been devoted as of late to some recent and upcoming site updates on both the back and front end. (If you haven't admired our new article, people and show pages - check 'em out, and there's MUCH more on the way including other features coming to those three). We've also more than quadrupled our server speed and capabilities to prepare for some other new features and our ever-expanding traffic.

Back to today's blog, I'd often disagreed with his reviews, but I was still saddened on Friday evening to learn of the passing of longtime theatre critic Howard Kissel, most known for his long tenure at the New York Daily News. His well-known biography of David Merrick - The Abominable Showman has long been amongst my favorite theatre reads; I even re-read (and re-purchased) it on the Kindle a couple of years back. If you haven't read it yet, you're missing out.

Critics are generally an unsung breed, but David Rooney has written a lovely piece, singing Kissel's praises over here @ the Hollywood Reporter

2) FLASH: Ricky Martin Meets Madonna
by Pat Cerasaro - February 05, 2012

One of the foremost male pop stars of the last twenty years is undeniably “Livin’ La Vida Loca” crooner Ricky Martin, so his deigning of appearing on next week’s GLEE as a new Spanish teacher, David Martinez, is a cause celebre for fans of the Latin superstar, GLEE, or, even, for those who follow the artists whom he covers on the episode - LMFAO’s “Sexy And I Know It” and, the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna. Recalling the golden days of television when hit parade variety shows would cover top chart hits when they were fresh and new, Ricky Martin tackling Madonna two days after the Super Bowl - with, supposedly, a LMFAO cameo occurring during her highly anticipated performance on Sunday - and taking on one of the year’s biggest songs so far, “Sexy And I Know It”, is pop culture must-see TV if there ever were any. Ricky Martin and Madonna are undeniably two of the most theatrical pop culture mainstays of the last few decades and their collective media super-blitz thanks to Martin’s GLEE appearance and Madonna’s Super Bowl performance is encapsulated perfectly in Martin’s essaying of Madonna’s classic caliente pop hit, “La Isla Bonita”. Both Martin and Madonna can certainly command a stage - and an audience of thousands; or, even, millions, as they shall both prove yet again on Sunday and Tuesday, respectively - so, let’s take a look at what we can look forward to from these two entertainment icons as we enter one of the most celebratory weekends of the year. First down! (more...)

3) InDepth InterView: Andrew Lloyd Webber Talks LOVE NEVER DIES, PHANTOM 25, Ricky Martin & More
by Pat Cerasaro - January 29, 2012

On Friday, I had the exceptional honor of talking to the most successful composer in the world, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, all about the unprecedented new HD film version of his thrilling new musical coming to movie theaters in February, a continuation of the story begun in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, titled LOVE NEVER DIES. In addition to outlining the impossibly detailed process of bringing a production as complex as the Simon Phillips Australian staging of LOVE NEVER DIES to the big screen, we also discuss the genesis of the show and what an immense achievement it is to now have the original musical - in the form of the 25th anniversary Royal Albert Hall production of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA - as well as the sequel - LOVE NEVER DIES - committed to celluloid, mere months apart. Also, 2012 is certainly the year of the Lord on Broadway thanks to new revivals of two of his most beloved musicals, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and EVITA (the latter starring Ricky Martin), as well as the 10,000th performance of PHANTOM on Broadway. Plus, Lloyd Webber clues us in on which musical of his he would like to film next - SUNSET BOULVEVARD, with either Madonna or original Tony-winning star Glenn Close - and he also elaborates on the indescribable allure of the Phantom legend, now, nearly thirty years after the original show’s debut and expresses his enthusiasm for the revolutionary new age of theatre-on-film we are experiencing now - all of that and much, much more! All three works deal with African-American life in the fictitious Catfish Row in Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 1920s. 7) STAGE TUBE: On This Day 1/15- THE 39 STEPS
by Stage Tube - January 15, 2012

Today in 2008, The 39 Steps opend at the American Airlines Theatre, where it ran for 771 performances. The play is a farce adapted from the 1915 novel by John Buchan and the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock. Patrick Barlow wrote the adaptation, based on the original concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon of a two-actor version of the play. The play's concept calls for the entirety of the 1935 adventure film The 39 Steps to be performed with a cast of only four. One actor plays the hero, Richard Hannay, an actress plays the three women with whom he has romantic entanglements, and two other actors play every other character in the show: heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object. This often requires lightning fast quick-changes and occasionally for them to play multiple characters at once. Thus the film's serious spy story is played mainly for laughs, and the script is full of allusions to (and puns on the titles of) other Alfred Hitchcock films, including Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo and North by Northwest.
