April 4, 2013

STOMP, the international percussion sensation, returns to Toronto for a strictly limited one week engagement - April 16-21, at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. Created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, STOMP continues its phenomenal run with four global productions: the ongoing sell-out production at New York's Orpheum Theatre, a permanent London company, and North American and European tours. Throughout its life, the show has continued to change by creating new material and new pieces in the show. It is safe to say you will never again look at supermarket carts or plumbing fixtures the same way. or paint cans, or kitchen sinks or.

30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 25- American Vaudeville Theatre Presents...TRAVESTIES OF 201230 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 25- American Vaudeville Theatre Presents...TRAVESTIES OF 2012
August 3, 2012

Travesties of 2012 is the latest and (I think I may say) most perfected iteration of a vaudeville show we have been producing since 1996, called the American Vaudeville Theatre. I am especially excited about the show for several reasons. One: our involvement in NYMF has made it especially easy to attract the very best acts. I can safely say this is the most solid bill of performers I've ever been able to present to the public. This particular conglomeration of amazing humans, taken in aggregate, is a bit jaw-dropping.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 24- The NYMF Hub30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 24- The NYMF Hub
August 1, 2012

I have had a lot of people asking me what it's like to be a Hub so, I decided to commandeer this computer, which is no easy task because the employees spend most of their time on YouTube and BroadwayWorldI mean helping guestsbut I digress. I guess I should start at the beginning. I used to be a bank, which I can sum up in one word.SUCKTASTIC! I mean if you thought that theater patrons complained you should hear bank customers.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 23- A Letter To Harvey Milk30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 23- A Letter To Harvey Milk
July 31, 2012

About a year ago, I was asked to do a recording of a musical called A Letter To Harvey Milk. I wasn't familiar with the writing team but from the moment I set foot in Ellen Schwartz's apartment and began to read the scenes and sing a bit of one of my songs, I knew I had come home!!!
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 22- Two Month Rule30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 22- Two Month Rule
July 30, 2012

When I found out about writing this thing my initial thoughts were: I'm hungry, my pants are too small and ooh I'm seeing batman tonight. Then I took a second and tried to decipher what exactly I was meant to write about. At this very moment, while I am at my computer in the cafe below my apartment trading my limited currency for bottomless coffee and wifi (bottomless coffee at first glance sounds much more erotic than it turns out to be).
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 21- Foreverman30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 21- Foreverman
July 29, 2012

FOREVERMAN started as a fascination with the concept of immortality. What would be the real ramifications of eternal life? How would it affect relationships, or romance? How could it affect a friendship? These were all questions floating around my head four years ago when I began the initial outline of the show.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 20- My Perfect Pet30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 20- My Perfect Pet
July 28, 2012

My Perfect Pet follows the adorable Cailin Green who dreams of getting a puppy for her upcoming tenth birthday. Her parents, however, aren't sure that Cailin is mature and responsible enough to care for a pet. So, we follow Cailin, her sister, Amy, and best friend Josh, as they go through a seemingly typical school day. During that time, there are lessons to learn and decisions to make. Will Cailin be worthy of receiving her prized perfect pet?
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 19- Zapata! The Musical30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 19- Zapata! The Musical
July 27, 2012

With only a few exceptions, Mexican revolutionary liberator Emiliano Zapata is my favorite human being who ever walked this earth. I'm not alone in this assessment. John Steinbeck felt the same way. So do Bruce Springsteen and Tom Morello, Harvard educated lead guitarist for RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. Like Nelson Mandela in South Africa, Zapata fought for the rights of his people with love. What a perfect subject for a Broadway musical! It sings, it dances, it speaks deeply to the human heart.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 18- The Groove Factory30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 18- The Groove Factory
July 26, 2012

Tomorrow at this time, we will be 2 hours until places for opening night. The past 4 months have been some of the most thrilling, the most terrifying and the most gratifying of my life. For the past 10 years, David and I have spent countless hours brainstorming, writing and rewriting (and rewriting) drafts and imagining our story come to life.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 17- Shelter30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 17- Shelter
July 25, 2012

Shelter is about a woman named Jeanine who is determined to be "part of the solution." She hopes to make a difference in the lives of the residents at a Philadelphia women's shelter. However, she is faced with the challenge of counseling those women who think that she is another counselor already looking to quit.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 16- Living With Henry30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 16- Living With Henry
July 24, 2012

LIVING WITH HENRY began with my personal HIV diagnosis 10 years ago - and grew as a means to cope with something that was initially very frightening - to shift it into something more humanized and emotionally manageable. The piece importantly frames HIV as a chronic illness rather than a death sentence - and it explores the very real challenges inherent in living with HIV today. Although HIV is a much different animal than it was twenty years ago - there is still a great deal of ignorance, stigma, misunderstanding and fear that we need to work through together as a united community.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 15- Swing State30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 15- Swing State
July 23, 2012

"So there I am, a lapsed Catholic at a Baptist revival meeting, and all of sudden, I'm on my feet, hands in the air, accepting Jesus as my personal savior...until a few days later when someone sat me down and explained, 'Of course you'll have to cut your hair and get rid of that jewelry.' So that ended my Baptist period."
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 14- Le Cabaret Grimm30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 14- Le Cabaret Grimm
July 23, 2012

'Veronique is back!' I wrote as I sent my mother a picture of me in a black bob wig. I hadn't worn the thing in 2 years, and I was surprised at how quickly and easily I slipped back in to the slinky character. In fact, I think my voice automatically gets deeper as my hair gets shorter!
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 13- Rio30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 13- Rio

July 20, 2012

"Every play needs a good start. If you have a good beginning, the rest just follows automatically. " So begins the journey of In The Night's main character, ghost writer and wannabe actress Jane.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 11- Re-Animator The Musical30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 11- Re-Animator The Musical
July 19, 2012

I love horror. Since I was a kid I've been obsessed with horror films - one of the greatest, of course, being H.P. Lovecraft's Re-Animator. As a teen, it was eye-opening to say the least to see the terrible (and terribly funny) things happening on that screen.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 10- Prison Dancer: The Musical30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 10- Prison Dancer: The Musical
July 18, 2012

Steamy sunbeams filter in through high-rise windows, falling on glistening skin. Too hot for clothes. Too hot to move and yet, the gasping exertions and determined movements continue.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 9- How Deep Is The Ocean30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 9- How Deep Is The Ocean
July 17, 2012

There are a couple of things you may be wondering about. 'How Deep Is The Ocean?' is an Irving Berlin song. Is this an Irving Berlin show or a show about Irving Berlin? The answer is no. Another thing you might find puzzling is the chlorine: chlorine; who wants to see a musical about that? The answer is you do.

30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 7- Arnie The Doughnut30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 7- Arnie The Doughnut
July 15, 2012

The process of bringing Arnie the Doughnut to life for NYMF has been far more than the last 30 days. As of this moment, it's been 96 days since I was hired to direct this zany love bomb of a show, and each and every one has been a joy.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 6 Ari Gold's Bashert30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 6 Ari Gold's Bashert
July 14, 2012

This is a story about dreams and destiny. My name is Ari Gold. I am Jewish. I am gay. I am a 4th generation lower east sider. And I am not the guy from Entourage. I call my style shtetle fabulous. My parents, Sid and Malkah Gold, who worked as educators in the public school system in the South Bronx, are two unorthodox orthodox Jews from New York with unfulfilled show-biz dreams. I like to call them Show-Jews!
30 DAYS OF NYMF: DAY 5 Show Me Real30 DAYS OF NYMF: DAY 5 Show Me Real
July 13, 2012

I started working on Show Me Real over a year ago when I was at a bit of a creative crossroads. I had been performing as a modern dancer around the city and simultaneously getting work as a choreographer in the musical theater industry. As I was splitting time between both worlds, I noticed that while there were some aesthetic and training differences between modern dance and musical theater, the passion for performance remained the same.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 4 Flambe Dreams30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 4 Flambe Dreams
July 12, 2012

As I write this we are less than 24 hours away from premiering 'Flamb Dreams' in NYMF 2012. My journey with the show began two and a half years ago when my wife and I were asked to co-direct a reading of a new musical by Matthew Hardy and Randy Klein. She was visibly pregnant at the time and this is partly how I know the timing so well - I simply take our son's age and add a couple months.
30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 3 Trouble30 DAYS OF NYMF: Day 3 Trouble
July 12, 2012

This has been a dream almost 5 years in the making for the creative team behind TROUBLE: A NEW ROCK MUSICAL playing at The Pershing Square Signature Center in this years festival.

July 9, 2012

It's so exciting to kick off our Festival for the first time ever during the summer. Shifting to July was a scary decision to make at first until we dove in - then it became clear it was meant to be. All sorts of doors have opened up to support the Festival in our new time slot - including the incredible support of the City of New York's Theatre Sub district Council. With that help, we were able to set up our first-ever NYMF Hub - a musical theatre lover's oasis right on 42nd Street.
