Yale's Summer Cabaret to Open with God is a DJ

Yale School of Drama's Summer Cabaret will open its 2007 season with Falk Richter's God is a DJ, a multimedia 'reality' event on stage, directed by Mike Donahue (Electronic City, Cabaret 2006 and Brand, Cabaret 2007).

"Would you willingly live under constant observation? This multimedia piece from one of Europe's most exciting contemporary playwrights reveals a couple living in an apartment/art installation monitored by a live studio and internet audience. Using highly integrated sound, video, space, text and physicality, God is a DJ challenges the place of the individual in a society where we are constantly pressured to be entertained," as the show is described in press materials.

"This show," says Donahue, "is about the games we play in our relationships, games that are both fun and violent, games that question what is real versus what's in our heads (and whether or not the difference matters).  It's real life as Art.  Only this time the art includes a theater full of cameras, televisions, live video projections, films, video games, sex and 'Dance Dance Revolution.'"

The production will star Carter Gill (The Merchant of Venice at Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Camino Real at Yale School of Drama) and Erica Sullivan (Lulu at Yale Rep, Camino Real at Yale School of Drama, PT Anderson's There Will Be Blood).

The production will feature set design by Zane Pihlstrom, lighting by Burke Brown, costumes by Anya Klepikov, sound by Sarah Pickett, and video design by Erik Pearson, with Rachel Tillman Smith as line producer.

This season, the Summer Cabaret will also present: Nelson Rodrigues' Pornographic Angel, directed by Claudia Tatinge Nascimento and running from July 5th through 14th; Eye, conceived and directed by Alex Knox and running through July 18th through 28th; and Euripides' The Bacchae (selected by popular vote), directed by Donahue, and running from August 1st through 11th.

For ticket information, call the box office 203-432-1567 or visit online at www.summercabaret.org.  Single tickets are $25 and available online at summercabaret.org or by calling 203.432.1567.  Senior, student and group discounts are available.

Doors open at 6:00 for dinner by Chef Anna from Anna's on Orange Street.  All performances take place at 217 Park Street between Chapel and Edgewood streets in downtown New Haven.
