World Premiere - David Caudle's 'In Development'

SEX, DEATH AND DRAMATURGY IGNITES NEW THEATRE'S

STAGE IN David Caudle'S WORLD PREMIERE IN DEVELOPMENT 

New Theatre continues its season with the World Premiere of David Caudle's In Development.  In this new dark comedy, sex, death and dramaturgy take the stage when renowned, aging playwright Gideon Flynn mentors a fresh crop of young hopefuls at a summer conference.  The previous year, his feedback had dire consequences for a troubled student, and now lightning seems poised to strike twice. 

This production marks David Caudle's 3^rd world premiere produced at New Theatre after productions of The Sunken Living Room and Likeness.  After its New Theatre World premiere, Likeness was produced in New York at the Manhattan Theatre Source in January.  After The Sunken Living Room's New Theatre World premiere co-production with Southern Rep, the play won an Ambie for Best New Work in New Orleans. and was published by Samuel French. It was also a finalist for the South Florida Carbonell Award Nominee for Best New Work; Gold Medal Finalist for the Pinter Review Prize for Drama and Finalist at the Lark Theatre's Playwrights Week.  

David Caudle is a member of the Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group at New York's Primary Stages, where he has taught playwriting and developed several new works.  He has been both a Walter E. Dakin Fellow and a Tennessee Williams Scholar at the Sewane Writers' Conference.  The Common Swallow opened last month at 45 Bleecker Street Theatre in New York, and is very soon to be published in the acclaimed online literary journal, Blackbird.  The Second House, a Sky Cooper Award Finalist, had a reading at Primary Stages on October 2nd, directed by Primary Stages Associate Artistic Director Michelle Bossy. 

Damsel was read in the Bridge Theatre Company's new work series, as well as Visiting Hours, which was also a Finalist in the Premiere Stages New Play Festival and a Finalist for the Christopher Wolk Award at the Abingdon Theatre Company.   He has had his plays produced at the Samuel Beckett Theatre in New York, the Tamarind Theatre in Los Angeles, Other awards and nominations include The Short Fall (2002 Finalist at the Lark), Love A Nurse (Finalist at the New Harmony Project), and his one-act, feet of clay (Finalist for the Heidemann Award at the Actors' Theatre of Louisville) won the 2004 Samuel French One-Act Competition and is published by Samuel French in its 29th Edition of Festival Plays. His short film, Feet of Clay, directed by True Blood (HBO) actress Carrie Preston, made the rounds of festivals including Miami's Gay and Lesbian Film Festival '07. 

Directed by Artistic Director, Ricky J. Martinez, the cast is solidly cast by New Theatre veterans Aubrey Shavonn and Bill Schwartz (retired City of Miami Police Officer & Spokesman, Lt. William Schwartz), joined by Mark Della Ventura, Ricardo Rodriguez and Skye Whitcomb, who are making their New Theatre debut.  Returning to New Theatre are Production Stage Manager Dana Hesch, Lighting Designer Travis Neff, Sound Designer Ozzie Quintana, Costume Designer K. Blair Brown and Scenic Designer Jesus Casimiro.
