Women's Theatre Project Presents 'Tongue Of A Bird'

The Women's Theatre Project Climaxes the 2006 Season with Southeastern Premiere Tongue of a Bird by Ellen McLaughlin

The Women's Theatre Project wraps up their mainstage production schedule for 2006 with the Southeastern Premiere of Tongue of a Bird by Ellen McLaughlin. This lyrical drama features a cast of five professional actors Annemaria Rajala, Elayne Wilks, Lela Elam, Erin Joy Schmidt and Dina Lewis directed by Genie Croft (Artistic Director of The Women's Theatre Project.) The show marks the ninth local premiere for the company, which is the only professional theatre company in the country producing works written by women with all female casts.

ABOUT THE PLAY:

Maxine, a search-and-rescue pilot, desperately seeks a missing young girl. Haunted by visions of her dead mother, and the lost girl, Maxine struggles to come to terms with her forgotten past. This beautiful play is a lyrical exploration of the relationship between mothers and daughters and of love lost and found.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT:

Actor, playwright and Barnard faculty member Ellen McLaughlin, is best known for originating the role of the Angel in Tony Kushner's play ANGELS IN AMERICA. McLaughlin played the Angel in the U.S. touring production and on Broadway.  McLaughlin has written nine plays that have been produced on and off Broadway, including DAYS AND NIGHTS WITHIN, A NARROW BED, HELEN, THE PERSIANS and OEDIPUS. Her plays have been produced at the National Actors' Theater, The Public Theater, and the Guthrie Theater, MN, among others. She has won the Susan Smith Blackburn Award and the Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Writer's Award. An anthology of her work, The Greek Plays, was published by Theatre Communications Group (TCG.) McLaughlin has appeared onstage as Cordelia in Oregon Shakespeare Festival's KING LEAR, Hedda in HEDDA GABLER at Berkeley Rep, Mrs. Alving in GHOSTS, Jenny in THREEPENNY OPERA at Trinity Repertory Theater (Elliot Norton Award,) and The Homebody in The Intimana's production of HOMEBODY/KABUL. Off Broadway, she has appeared as Paulinka in Kushner's A BRIGHT ROOM CALLED DAY at the Public Theater, Alice in Manhattan Theater Club's BLUE WINDOW and as Agave in THE BACCHAE at LaMaMa.

SHOW INFO - DATES, TIMES, TICKETS, LOCATION:

Thursday, Friday & Saturday at 8PM - Sunday at 2PM Tongue of a Bird opens on October 26 and runs through November 12, 2006. Performances are on Thursday, Friday & Saturday at 8PM and Sunday at 2PM. On Friday, October 27th, a special opening weekend after-party will be held with the cast and crew at The Melting Pot fondue restaurant; reservations for opening night are required and should be made through the box office.
