Walking Tour, Valentine's Concert and More Set for Merchant's House Museum, Feb 2013

February-Events-Announced-at-the-Merchants-House-Museum-20010101

The Merchant's House Museum is New York City's only family home preserved intact - inside and out - from the mid-19th century. Home to a prosperous merchant-class family for almost 100 years, it is complete with the family's original furnishings and personal possessions, offering a rare and intimate glimpse of domestic life from 1835-1865. The museum has just announced its February 2013 events. Details below!

Walking Tour: From Bowery to Bond, in the Footsteps of the Astors
Date: Sundays, starting February 3
Time: 1 p.m.
Location: Merchant's House Museum, 29 East Fourth Street (btwn Lafayette & Bowery)

Description: In 1835, when the Tredwell family purchased 29 East 4th Street, NoHo was an exclusive residential suburb called the Bond Street area. That same year, The Morning Herald proclaimed, "The elegance and beauty of this section cannot be surpassed in the country." Learn about the history of the Tredwells' neighborhood as it changed from a residential enclave for the wealthy to the cultural and intellectual center of the city in the mid-19th century, to the fashionable area it is again today. Landmark highlights include Colonnade Row, the Astor Library (now The Public Theater), and The Cooper Union. $15, $20 includes Museum Admission. Reservations not necessary.

Tour is approx. 50 minutes and begins promptly at 1pm. Promenaders will return to the Museum in time to take the 2pm Guided Tour if they wish.

Screening of The Heiress (1949)
Date: Tuesday, February 5
Time: 7 p.m.

Location: Merchant's House Museum, 29 East Fourth Street (btwn Lafayette & Bowery)
Description: Based on Washington Square, Henry's James's classic novel of mid-19th century New York City, this haunting film tells the story of young love -- and a dominating father who didn't approve. Our screening will take place in the Museum's Greek revival double parlors, whose uncanny similarity to the film's sets is no accident. Because of the Museum's remarkably intact period architecture, the filmmakers conducted extensive research in the 1940s to design the sets. And the sets of the current Broadway revival of The Heiress are also based on the Merchant's House. Come see the film, then see the show before it closes (February 10). The film will be introduced by noted videographer Anthony Bellov. $20, $10 MHM members.

Reservations required; call 212-777-1089 or visit merchantshouse.org/calendar.

Love in the Parlors: A Valentine in Concert
Date: Thursday, February 14
Time: 7 p.m.
Location: Merchant's House Museum, 29 East Fourth Street (btwn Lafayette & Bowery)
Description: Lush, romantic vocal music of the world's great 19th-century composers performed in the Museum's Greek revival double parlors. Bond Street Euterpean Singing Society singers Anthony Bellov, Rosalind Gnatt, Jane Elizabeth Rady and Dayle Vander Sande perform music by Rossini, Schubert, Liszt, Brahms, Stephen Foster, Amy Beach, and more. Sweet. 75 minutes.

$30, $20 Students & Seniors, $15 MHM Members. Reservations required; call 212-777-1089 or visit merchantshouse.org/calendar.
