Wagner College Theatre’s 2012 Dance Project is ‘A Journey Through Tap,’ Opening 2/28

By:

"The Dance Project: A Journey Through Tap," the third Stage One studio theater production in Wagner College Theatre's 2011-12 season, opens on Tuesday, Feb. 28 and runs through March 4.

The show features original dances as well as pieces inspired by renowned choreographers of earlier eras. Performers in this year's Dance Project pay homage to such celebrated choreographers as Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Honi Coles and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson.

The 2012 Dance Project is directed by Wagner College adjunct theater professor Margo Hammond, who has worked closely with the American Tap Dance Foundation of New York City and its annual Tap City dance festival. Hammond loves tap and the way it has changed over time, with each new choreographer inspiring those who follow to make this dance form their own.

Hammond has high praise for the professionalism of the 17 hard-working student dancers who bring this year's Dance Project to life, including what she calls their "articulate musicianship." This year's show includes singing and is filled with high-energy, chill-inducing full-cast numbers.

At each performance of this year's Dance Project, a guest artist will be featured. Confirmed artists include Wagner College theater professor and Tony Award-winning Broadway actress Michele Pawk, who will perform on Saturday, March 3 at 2 p.m., and Germaine Salsberg, one of New York City's most influential tap dance teachers, appearing on March 3 at 8 p.m. Additional guest artists will also be showcased during other performances.

Show times for "The Dance Project: A Journey Through Tap" are:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 28 through Saturday, March 3 - 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 3 and Sunday, March 4 - 2 p.m.

For tickets, visit or call the box office at 718-390-3259. For security purposes, Wagner College Theatre does not accept any payments or orders via email. Please note that, due to the ongoing restoration of Main Hall, the box office has temporarily moved to Reynolds House.
