The Wagner College Theatre will stage David Ives' "School for Lies" from Nov. 27 through Dec. 2 in its Stage One studio theater. The show will be directed by Staten Island theater mainstay and Wagner College faculty member Mickey Tennenbaum.

"The School for Lies," a contemporary adaption of Moliere's "The Misanthrope," tells the story of Frank, who has developed a hatred for society's falseness. Due to misinformation provided by a mutual friend, Frank finds himself drawn to Celemine, a widow with many suitors. In Ives' version of the story, Celemine is only drawn to Frank because she believes he is the brother of King Louis. A unique courtship begins, but ultimately Celemine must reveal who she truly loves.

In David Ives' version of the play, the couple's romance is not the only revision of the original.

"This is a modern adaptation of the play," the director said. "David Ives kept the original form, with rhyming couplets, but the dialogue is very funny and modern. So characters dressed in 17th century outfits will be saying things that today's audience can understand."

Tennenbaum explained why he believes David Ives' play is so special.

"I love the style of his work. It's all about the words and the comedy, and something to feel good about," Tennenbaum said.

The talented WCT cast includes seniors Alex Boniello, JoNathan Goodman, Matthew Hosmer, Julia Jones, Caitlin Beckman and Olivia Puckett.

This hysterical and enjoyable play will be appeal to all audiences, the director says.

"I want the audience to have a good time, because it is very funny," Tennenbaum said. "I think people need to get away from the problems of everyday life and just enjoy some funny theater. But at the same time, 'School for Lies' is also a commentary on today's life and style."
