WU MAN'S Tour with THE KNIGHTS Performs at Asia Society in NYC Tonight

A new date has been added to Wu Man's United States tour with New York City's The Knights. She will perform with the ensemble at the Asia Society in New York City tonight, February 7, 2013 at 8pm. The Asia Society is located at 725 Park Avenue and tickets are $22 for members; $26 for students/seniors; and $30 for nonmembers. For more information, visit: http://theknightsnyc.com/

Wu Man will perform her own composition Blue and Green (arranged for pipa and string orchestra), and Lou Harrison's Concerto for Pipa & String Orchestra. The program will also include works by Debussy, Milhaud, and Stravinsky.

From February 9 - 25 pipa virtuoso Wu Man, Musical America's 2013 Musician of the Year, will participate as a featured soloist in a nine-city United States tour with New York City's The Knights. This will be Wu Man's debut performance with the ensemble and she will perform two works: Lou Harrison's Concerto for Pipa & String Orchestra, and her own composition Blue and Green arranged for pipa and string orchestra. The program will also include works by Debussy, Milhaud, and Stravinsky. Full tour information is listed below.

Close to ten years ago Wu Man composed a suite for pipa and small ensemble called 'Red, Blue, Green.' Wu Man recorded the movement Green, which is based on a tune sung by her then four-year-old son Vincent, on her 2003 album "Pipa: from a distance." She paired this movement with Blue, a piece based on a folk tune by the Li tribe of South East China, to create the concerto she will be performing with The Knights. She will also perform Lou Harrison's pipa concerto, which was commissioned in 1997 by Lincoln Center for Wu Man and conductor Dennis Russell Davies and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra.

Through numerous trips to her native China, Wu Man has premiered hundreds of new works for the pipa, while spearheading multimedia projects to both preserve and create awareness of China's ancient musical traditions. Her adventurous spirit and virtuosity have led to collaborations across artistic disciplines allowing Wu Man to reach wider audiences as she works to break through cultural and musical borders. She has spearheaded numerous projects under the umbrella concept, "Return to the East," including her acclaimed CD/DVD 'Borderlands' released in early 2012 as the final installment of the ten-volume "Music of Central Asia" ethnographic series produced by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Culture Heritage. Her most recent project was her ethnographic documentary DVD "Discovering a Musical Heartland: Wu Man's Return to China," which was released in September 2012.

Wu Man continues the 2012-13 season with a solo recital and performance of 'A Chinese Home' with the Kronos Quartet at the Auckland Arts Festival in March and will continue to tour with the Silk Road Ensemble throughout the season.

The Knights is a group of New York City musicians co-founded by brothers Colin Jacobsen and Eric Jacobsen, the violin and cello duo that also founded Brooklyn Rider. Retaining the intimacy and spontaneity of chamber music, The Knights continue to expand the classical repertoire with innovative projects while performing in a variety of venues around the world.
