Entering its 10th Anniversary year, the hit Broadway musical Wicked has set a new Broadway record for the highest one-week gross with a box office take of $2,947,172, for the week ending December 30, 2012. The blockbuster musical has been Broadway's #1 show for an unprecedented nine consecutive years, annually out-grossing all other productions since 2004, its first full year on Broadway.
In the same week, Wicked also set a new national touring record with a one-week gross of $2,755,070 at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis, as well as the house record at Honolulu's Blaisdell Center with a gross of $1,585,402. Combined, the three North American companies grossed $7,287,645, for the week ending December 30, 2012. Both the Broadway production and the touring engagement in Honolulu played 9-performance weeks; the St. Louis engagement was an 8-performance week.
There are currently 7 productions worldwide: New York, London, Holland, Japan, Australia/New Zealand, and two concurrent North American National Tours. Globally, Wicked has amassed nearly $2.9 billion in ticket sales and has been seen by 36 million people worldwide in its 9-year history.
Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and a book by Winnie Holzman. The production is directed by Joe Mantello with musical staging by Wayne Cilento. Wicked is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.
