Vertigo Announces 2010 Season Productions, Including ROPE
After the runaway success of Vertigo Theatre Productions modern-day update of the classic thriller ‘Dial M For Murder' reimagined as ‘M'. the company are returning back to the thriller roots and indeed back to updating a classic thriller, this time PatRick Hamilton's Rope.
Craig Hepworth, the writer and co-director of the piece explains why: "When we first wanted to do a reimagining of a classic thriller it came down to two - Dial M For Murder and Rope. Both thrillers are superb and would lend themselves to a modern day society adding a whole new layer to these great pieces. After ‘M' was such a huge success and when we were looking for the next project after our last play ‘Rage' I could not stop thinking about how well ‘Rope' could work. Whilst it's a risky decision doing a second update of a thriller (especially when both original plays were turned in to movies by Alfred Hitchcock) I know we have a fantastic script and I think our new version ‘Something Sinister' brings a lot of new surprises to the stage".
Going under anew title, ‘Something Sinister' keeps the similar structure from the original piece, two boys are throwing a leaving party for their friend who's moving to LA to become a screen writer. However during their last encounter the two boys murder their friend and stuff his body in a trunk in the living room. That night the victim's friends and family arrive to say goodbye, not knowing that his goodbye was permanent and his body is in the trunk that they are sat around. That night a power game commences and questions are asked regarding self opinion, wealth and entitlement, but it's only a matter of time before the body is discovered, and when it is all hell will break loose.
The cast for Rope include Vertigo regulars Craig Hepworth (Phillip), Adele Stanhope (Janet), Emma Willcox (Joanna) and Dale Vicker (Kyle). The company also sees the return of Mike Gates (Simon) and welcomes new actors to the Vertigo fold Tomas Dunderdale (Brandon), Jamie Edgerton (Peter) and Eden Duke (David)
Something Sinister opens at Taurus Bar from the 27th of April through May 1st, tickets go on sale January 25th. The play is for persons 15 and over.
After Something Sinister attention turns to Hedwig and the Angry IncH. Dale Vicker takes on the iconic role as Hedwig. The production will be the biggest show staged by Vertigo yet and looks set to open in the summer of 2010. After Hedwig the company bring another original play to the stage set inside a mental hospital for girls, the untitled project is a vehicle for Vertigo regular Emma Willcox and is written by Craig Hepworth and Adele Stanhope.
The company have had a fantastic 2009 with the Lowry transfer of their UK Premiere Production of ‘Dog Sees God; Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead' proving a hit with critics and audiences alike, the play ‘M' was the fastest selling Vertigo Production and gained rave reviews and finishing of the year was the highly anticipated original play Rage.
