I think dogs really get it. They have their priorities straight and live totally in the moment. Life is an awesome combination of eating, sleeping, playing, pooping and hanging out with people who love you. Throw in some snow, an old shoe to chew, a good stick to fetch, some crotch sniffing and the world is their oyster. Sign me up for that life in the next round—
I’m a Great Dane at heart.
Auditions are full of thrilling unknowns. You gotta love it because it’s a big, silly game. It can be fun. A puzzle to solve. A yummy stick to catch.
Why do people turn into puddles of mush when they see any puppy on the planet? I mean, really think about it. You just can’t look at a puppy without being reduced to some adolescent blob of grinning goofiness. No matter how serious you are, it’s a delight because this creature with absolutely no coordination in front of you just wants to play, play, play with everyone who is willing. Think about that! You only have to remember three words.
Bring. It. On.
“Bring it on!” is a great cue to imprint a sense of playful courage in your brain. I’d take it one step further (I always do) and make it a code word. Pick something delicious and irreverent. Something secret that you never share so that you keep some mysterious sparkle in your eyes.
Something like—WOOF.
That’s hot. Woof. The Zen nature of dog life and fabulous freedom to “bring it on” in auditions just for the fun of it all wrapped up in a code word like WOOF. Divinely inspired, if I do say so myself. Like you, I’m an artist!
What will your word be? I want you to write it somewhere so that you will see it the next time you audition right before you walk into the room—whether it’s in your journal, by your music, or on the back of your hand. Simplify
The Situation (with your code word) to nothing more than the idea of good ol’ tail wagging dog play and see what surprising things happen.
