I've had two amazing theatrical experiences recently that showcase the power of what we do. Firstly, I was absolutely blown away by Sherie Rene Scott's personal and professional triumph with Everyday Rapture. I walked out inspired, refreshed and honored to be in theatre.
Why? Because Sherie went out on a limb where the fruit was and ate it right in front of me. Everyday Rapture was irreverent, brave, heartfelt and filled with naked truths. Isn't that art? Yes, I understand that SRS is delicious and sexy with uber-talent, but she created a piece that was not handed to her, but born out of a desire to create. And she knocked it out of the friggin' park. Sherie and I are once removed by about 100 people and I swear when I see her I am going to be the stranger that just wraps her in a big ol' bear hug to say thanks for paving the way for others to do what you do. I swear.
What have you done that is that personal and brave?
It doesn't have to be on Broadway, by the way. I just witnessed Coyote Rep's production of Questions My Mother Can't Answer starring Andrea Caban in the New York Fringe Festival. It occured in a crappy little theatre in the East Village with one chair on the stage, as these things do. And it was not a musical. And it didn't cost a hundred bucks.
And it was as magnificent.
Again, I witnessed a powerful woman telling a personal story filled with life's perfect imperfections and going out on that limb to risk everything. And win even more.
I'm tired of embittered actor/artists complaining about what is not being "given" to them or how "other people get all the breaks." Wake up. Stop complaining and do something that feels uncomfortable or out on a limb. You earn your breaks. You create your luck. You make your own wins. The sooner you figure that out, the sooner you discover the treasure chest of marvels that is and will become your life. Period.
Live who you are. Love what you do.
