Trinity Rep presents 'Richard III', beginning January 25th

By:

This winter, Trinity Rep will bring Shakespeare's masterpiece Richard III to the stage for the first time in the theater's 43-year history. The production will run from January 25th through March 2nd.

Trinity's production of Richard III is part of 'Shakespeare for a New Generation', a national theater initiative sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with Arts Midwest.

Kevin Moriarty returns to Providence to direct the play after his recent appointment as Artistic Director of the Dallas Theater Center.  Resident Actor Brian McEleney plays the lead role in the tale of the villainous king and his ruthless ascension to the throne.

"When we look at Shakespeare's career, Richard III was his break-out play -- not only his first huge hit, but his first "star"character, " director Moriarty said in a recent press release, "Richard has incredible energy, duplicity, and Machiavellian tendencies – paired with an elegance, wit and sophistication. Shakespeare's craftsmanship hit a new level with this piece, and the muscularity of the play made it popular – his most performed play -- for 400 years. ", Moriarity continued.

The look of Trinity's production will be contemporary, with the action happening on a set in present-day military clothing. The battles will be fought with modern weapons and current alt-rock music will underscore the action. The production team includes set design by Michael McGarty, costumes by resident designer William Lane, lighting by Tyler Micoleau and sound design by Ryan Rumery.

Previews for Richard III begin January 25th through March 2nd in Trinity Rep's Chace Theater. The first performance on January 25th at 8:00 p.m. is Pay-What-You-Can.

Regular performances begin January 30th, with ticket prices ranging from $20.00 - $60.00 each.

Tickets can be purchased at the Trinity Rep box office, 201 Washington St. or by phone at (401) 351-4242; and online at www.trinityrep.com.
