Tony Award winner Christopher Hampton, currently represented on Broadway with his translation of the acclaimed, Tony Award-nominated God of Carnage and the revival of his play The Philanthropist, has joined the creative team of the new musical REBECCA, currently in development.

Hampton, who has won two Tony Awards for his work on Sunset Boulevard (for book and lyrics) and nominations for his plays Les Liasons Dangereuses and The Philanthropist, will pen the English language adaptation of the book for REBECCA, as well as the English lyrics, along with original book-writer and lyricist Michel Kunze.

The musical, which is being produced by Ben Sprecher and Louise Forlenza, is in discussions for a Toronto premiere prior to Broadway and the West End.

REBECCA, based on the classic Daphne Du Maurier novel (and later turned into an Oscar-winning film by Alfred Hitchcock) features book and lyrics by Michael Kunze, music by Sylvester Levay, and direction by Francesca Zambello, director of Broadway's The Little Mermaid and the new musical Little House on the Prairie.

REBECCA had its world premiere in 2006 at Vereinigte Buhnen Wien in Vienna, where it has played to sold-out houses, totaling more than 406,000 people.
