Three Of NYC's Top Indie Theaters Merge This May At Workshop

Three of NYC's top indie theatre companies, Theatre of the Expendable, Small Pond Entertainment, and Cross- Eyed Bear Productions, will join forces, in the spirit of collaboration, for a repertory merger this May at The WorkShop Theater in Midtown Manhattan.

In today's declining economy it's getting harder and harder for indie theatre companies to be able to afford to produce their work in New York City. These three companies have banded together to share production costs, performance space, design teams, and resources to present a month long repertory merger of three bold new plays.

Mare Cognitum

Squiggy and the Goldfish

Squiggy has a lot of problems. His home life is rough, his love life sucks, and his goldfish has just started talking to him. But things are about to change. In the play of Squiggy's life, he's about to make some cuts. Will he find the answers he's looking for or will he end up at the bottom of the goldfish bowl?

A zen exploration of the gap between truth and convenient fictions that employs the known facts about General Tomoyuki Yamashita and his legendary gold to illuminate the tangled love lives of four disaffected New Yorkers- Calvin Kanayama, a Japanese-American man with a passion for Star Trek, his girlfriend Debbie Goldberg, a Jewish woman who loves to taunt her family by dating the goyim, her roommate Sean O'Connell, a homo who's trying not to date straight men anymore, and his fag hag Kathy Eaton, a WASP model who's sporadically studying astrology and Buddhism.

All three shows will play at the WorkShop Theater (312 West 36th Street, Fourth Floor East) throughout May.
Theatre of the Expendable develops and produces plays that ask our audience members how people become expendable. Also, since we view no audience member as expendable, we keep our ticket prices low - often lower than, and never higher than, the price of an average movie theatre ticket
Small Pond Entertainment is an arts organization that seeks to educate performing artists about the business of a production from development to performance. Through experiential learning, students and artists will work side by side with trained professionals who will guide them through the process of managing and producing a production. The goal is to develop self-sufficient, business-conscious artists.

Cross-Eyed Bear Productions has been producing theatre in New York since 1999, and is a theatre company dedicated to the idea that Theatre should be entertaining, thought provoking, and most importantly, fun. We believe that if we have fun doing a play that we enjoy, our audiences will enjoy it and have fun as well. We believe that "play" is an essential part of theatre; that children playing "Let's pretend" have more in common with the core of true theatre than most shows currently on Broadway; that emotional depth is more important than technical wizardry.
