The Vagina Monologues - could be described at this point as an international phenomenon. Since first performed in 1997 in the basement of a café in New York's Greenwich Village, over 800 productions have been staged in over 30 countries.

The Vagina Monologues is alternately hilarious and deeply disturbing. But as important as the serious monologues are (the tribute to Bosnian rape victims, an eyewitness report about the wonder of childbirth) humor is the show's real strength.

The play finds humor in the use of hand mirrors at get-to-know-your-anatomy workshops, an elderly woman's dreams about Burt Reynolds, the indignities of pelvic exams, and one particular four-letter word for vagina that should be a term of endearment and praise, not an insult.

Some monologues, like the story of a young woman who was sexually abused by male relatives, but then found redemption (and intense pleasure) with her first lesbian experience, combine drama and comedy.

In short, the play delivers a clear and powerful message to men and women: people should love their bodies, and most importantly, themselves.

Performance run time: 90 minutes. No intermission.
