Journey to Africa and Back in FST's Gompertz Theatre

The Fula From America Marks FST's Second Stage III Show of 2007

The Fula From America by Carlyle Brown, the second offering in Florida Studio Theatre's Stage III Season begins Wednesday, February 28 in the Gompertz Theatre. Carlyle Brown will be coming to Sarasota to perform his insightful and comedic one-man play.

Carlyle Brown's The Fula From America questions the balance of heritage and identity. The play is the real-life story of the playwright's trip to Africa in the 1980's in search of his own African Identity. What he encountered was anything but what he expected.

In the play, Brown journeys throughout West Africa. He delves deep into the bush and explores the corridors of the African elite. He is thrust into the pains of poverty and uplifted by incredible generosity. He travels through a strikingly foreign landscape and culture that is Africa in the 1980's.

In The Fula From America the audience gets to travel with Brown as he seeks do find how much of him is African and how much is American. Ultimately he begins to question the boundary of the African-American hyphen.

Speaking to the more universal meaning of the show, Brown says "When one packs one's bag for a journey, one learns too late that he or she has packed all their joys and troubles in a single compact place. And no matter what we pack the only thing we really bring with us is ourselves…The journey I share with you now is a journey true to life, but a journey that has a parallel track, it is a journey that has been realized in life and now is a journey of imagination, memory, and the theater, it's ultimate destination."

The Fula From America begins February 28 and runs through March 23, 2007.

Tickets may be purchased from the FST Box Office in person or by calling (941) 366-9000.  Florida Studio Theatre 1241 North Palm Avenue Sarasota, FL 34236 Website: www.fst2000.org
