The Civilians Name Marion Friedman Managing Director

By:

The Civilians (Steven Cosson, Artistic Director), the acclaimed New York-based experimental theater troupe, recently announced that Marion Friedman has been named as their Managing Director.  Friedman replaces outgoing Producing Director Kyle Gorden, who has overseen the group for 3 years.

Friedman joins The Civilians after six years as a production stage manager.  She has worked at both regional and New York theaters including The Atlantic Theater Company, Playwrights Horizons, Center Theatre Group, the Goodman Theater, Yale Repertory Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre and The Play Company. Much of her stage management career was devoted to the work of August Wilson, including his final play Radio Golf, which was produced at 8 theaters nationwide, including the Cort Theatre on Broadway.  Most recently, she worked at the Kennedy Center with August Wilson's Twentieth Century, in which all ten plays of his century cycle were produced in a 5 week festival.  Prior to her work as a stage manager, Marion worked in the development departments of Manhattan Theater Club and Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.  She is a graduate of Princeton University and the Yale School of Drama.

The New York-based Civilians, whose other works include the musical hit Gone Missing and their recent Paris Commune, was founded in 2001 by Artistic Director Steven Cosson. The renowned company develops original projects inspired from investigations into real life, using methods that combine documentary and artistic practices.  The Civilians' 7 original shows have been presented by numerous regional theatres, arts festivals and a range of venues that include La Jolla Playhouse, The Public Theater, A.R.T., HBO's US Comedy Festival, the Humana Festival, London's Soho Theatre, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (Fringe First Award, 2006) and other venues worldwide.  Upcoming projects include multiple productions of their newest work This Beautiful City, a new play with music that details the explosion of America's evangelical Christian movement at Washington, DC's The Studio Theatre (June 11 – July 6, 2008), Los Angeles' Kirk Douglas Theatre (September 21 – October 26, 2008) and NYC's Vineyard Theatre in early 2009.
