The Unicorn Theatre Presents Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, 3/17

By:

Known for American roots music, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason bring a repertoire of original tunes to The Unicorn Theatre on March 17 at 8pm. Jay and Molly will play renditions of hard-driving Appalachian, Cajun and Celtic fiddle tunes, stirring Civil War classics, sassy songs from the golden age of swing and country, stunning waltzes and deeply moving original compositions.

Tickets to Jay Ungar and Molly Mason are $30. Tickets may be purchased in person at The Colonial Theatre Ticket Office at 111 South Street Pittsfield, MA 01201 or by calling (413) 997-4444 or online at www.TheColonialTheatre.org. The Ticket Office is open Monday-Friday 10am–5pm, Saturdays 10am–2pm or on any performance day from 10am until intermission. Tickets may also be purchased with cash at the Unicorn Theatre prior to the performance. The Unicorn Theatre Box office will open one hour prior to the performance the day of the show and tickets are subject to availability.

Since joining forces in the late 1970s, Jay and Molly have become one of the most celebrated duos on the American acoustic music scene, according to press notes. With their comfortable sense of fun and their love of the music, they make each concert a musical journey—sometimes spanning two continents and two centuries. Jay and Molly draw their repertoire and inspiration from a wide range of American musical styles: 19th-century classics, lively Appalachian, Cajun, and Celtic fiddle tunes and favorites from the golden age of country and swing, along with their own songs, fiddle tunes, and orchestral compositions.

Jay Ungar and Molly Mason achieved international recognition when their performance of Jay's composition, “Ashokan Farewell,” became the musical hallmark of Ken Burns' The Civil War on PBS. The soundtrack won a Grammy and “Ashokan Farewell,” was nominated for an Emmy. The piece was originally inspired by Jay & Molly's Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps in New York's Catskill Mountains, which are still going strong today. At Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camp, people come together to become better fiddlers, guitarists, mandolin players, percussionists, dancers, dance callers and instructors.

In recent years, Jay and Molly have reached an ever widening audience through their appearances on Great Performances, A Prairie Home Companion, their own public radio specials, and through their work on film soundtracks such as Brother's Keeper, Legends of the Fall, and a host of Ken Burns' PBS documentaries. They've performed at the White House for two sitting Presidents and continue to tour extensively.
