The Des Moines Community Playhouse Presents GIRLS' WEEKEND Reading, 5/13

By:

The Des Moines Community Playhouse play reading series presents the new farce, "Girls' Weekend," 7:00 PM, Monday, May 13. "Girls' Weekend" is by local playwright Karen Schaeffer. The evening is free; beverages will be available for purchase.

"Girls' Weekend" is a farce about a group of women who take a vacation that goes horribly awry when their boyfriends and husbands show up. This results in some creative hide-and-seek, lies, and story-telling in order to maintain what has turned into a façade of a girls' weekend.

The Playhouse cast features Lonnie Appleby, Peter Dean, Anne Frett, Katy Merriman, Megan Schettler Schug, Cody Schug, Gabe Thompson, and Nancy Zubrod. The reading will be directed by Lauren McCool, who also administers the program.

Schaeffer is an accomplished actress who recently created the seven minute short, "Lost Keys," for the One Week, One Writer, One Actor. She also wrote the one act play "Ladies' Room," a social statement about how far society has moved away from community interaction, and "Vanessa Meets Mr. Wolfe: A Little Red Riding Hood Story," based on the fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood," for The Playhouse's Friday Funday program. "Girls' Weekend" is her first full-length play.

The play reading series is held one Monday each month on the stage in the theatre's upper lobby. Actors read from scripts; there are no costumes or scenery pieces. John Viars, Playhouse executive director, says, "The goal of this project is to offer audiences and volunteers an opportunity to familiarize themselves with upcoming productions, as well as offer insight into new scripts and possible titles to be mounted in the future. "

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
