The Charles Phoenix Big Retro Slide Show Plays Pomona June 4
Join pop culture humorist and author Charles Phoenix for a deep-fried and delicious mix and mash-up of the very best of his massive collection of flea market-found vintage Kodachrome slides. The Charles Phoenix Big Retro Slide Show, a comedy performance about mid-century Americana, comes to Wally Parks' National Hot Rod Museum for one night only, on Saturday, June 4 at 8pm.
Charles Phoenix super-charges the classic living room slide show by reinventing it into a hip and high octane celebration of classic and kitschy mid-century Southern California life and style. With his infectious enthusiasm and keen eye for oddball detail, Phoenix roasts and toasts mid-century tourist traps, Southern California landmarks, theme parks, space age suburbia, car culture, festive fashions and more...in color! Audiences from coast to coast enjoy his gracious wit, colorful suits and original spin on the great Americana experience.
Showman, author and humorist Charles Phoenix is the "Ambassador of Americana." Celebrating classic and kitsch pop culture, he is known for his retro slide show performances, school bus field trip tours, roller skating variety shows, test kitchen creations, and Slide of the Week emails. Charles Phoenix is also the author of several colorful coffee table books celebrating mid-century Southern California, Las Vegas, Hawaii, road trips and his native Pomona Valley. At the 2003 New York Fringe Theatre Festival, his Retro Vacation Slide Show Tour of the U.S.A. was awarded "Most Unique Theatrical Performance." The LA Weekly chose Charles for the cover of its 2008 People Issue, calling him the "Kodachrome King." In 2009, Charles was the Grand Marshall of Pasadena's Doo Dah Parade. Charles is a frequent guest on The Martha Stewart Show, a regular commentator on NPR, and recently appeared on Conan.
The National Hot Rod Museum features a spectacular variety of choice vintage, historical custom cars, hot rods, roadsters and dragsters alongside photographs, trophies, helmets and driving uniforms, paintings, and memorabilia chronicling more than 50 years of American motorsports.
The Charles Phoenix Big Retro Slide Show takes place on Saturday,June 4 at 8pm. The Wally Parks' National Hot Rod Museum is located at 1101 W.
