Teens Play Starring Roles as Volunteers at PlayhouseSquare

By:

The PlayhouseSquare Community Engagement & Education Department is now accepting applications for four teen programs - STAR Leaders, STAR Reporters, Students Take A Role at the Square (STARS) and Teen Advisory Council. Applications are available online at playhousesquare.org/teens or by calling 216-348-7909.

"We've developed these programs to give teens an inside look at the performing arts industry," said Colleen Porter, director of community engagement & education. "They give us their time, energy and enthusiasm and we aim to have them leave with an understanding of all that goes into presenting a performance. The students build communication skills and gain awareness of the variety of career paths available in the performing arts."

STAR Reporters
STAR Reporters review KeyBank Broadway Series at PlayhouseSquare performances just like professional critics. Students selected for this role receive admission to Press Night for all KeyBank Broadway Series shows and their reviews are posted to The PlayhouseSquare website (playhousesquare.org/starreporters). Training is provided. Applicants must submit a writing sample and be able to meet strict deadlines. Only 10 STAR Reporter roles are available to high school students who live in Northeast Ohio. Applications are due September 23.

STARS and STAR Leaders
The STARS volunteer program provides Northeast Ohio high school students with on-the-job training in customer service and the performing arts combined with an opportunity to give back to the community. STARS have the choice of ushering at Thursday evening, Saturday evening, Sunday matinee or Sunday evening KeyBank Broadway Series shows. The STAR Leader program is open to teens ages 16-19 who have participated in the STARS program for at least one year. Applications are due September 23.

Teen Advisory Council
The PlayhouseSquare Teen Advisory Council is open to teens ages 14-19 who live in Northeast Ohio and have participated in a PlayhouseSquare Teen Program for at least one year. This group is charged with reviewing and making recommendations regarding programs and policies that affect the teen audience at PlayhouseSquare. Applications are due September 2.

PlayhouseSquare understands its vital role as an educator in our community, and is committed to providing arts learning opportunities of the highest quality to enrich the lives of students, families, teachers and adults. Since its inception in 1998, the Community Engagement & Education Department has offered thousands of events, workshops, classes and more, most with minimal or no fees, to people of all ages from all areas of Northeast Ohio. The generous support of individual and corporate donors and foundations makes it all possible.
