TWISTED LOVE: An Opera Night at Mojo Theatre Set for 2/7

By:
Come see twelve of the Bay Area's up and coming vocalists perform unconventional love confessions with twisted conclusions to some of opera's favorite pieces. The evening features songs from Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), Bizet's Carmen, as well as the infamous mad scene from Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor.
Reimagined for today's audience and inspired by Valentine's Day, these arias from opera's greatest hits are set in a new context that is not your typical boy meets girl love story. Twisted Love's unlucky protagonist signs up for a speed-dating event and doesn't have much success with any of the potential dates and even gets a few unwanted advances. From an oversexed boy to a stuck-in-the past girl to a love-on-the-verge-of-homicide lover, these updated classic opera numbers prove to be steamier, racier, and more shocking than you remember.
"Everyone has experienced the first date with someone who can't stop talking about his or her ex, someone who continually hits on the person at the next table, or has a friend who is eternally unlucky in love," said creator Roy Eikleberry, "But this show gives twisted a whole new meaning."
Accompanied by pianist Ben Malkevitch, there will be performances by Bailey Batti, Brandon Casbeer, Roy Eikleberry, Alexis Flores, Coco Harris, Angela Jarosz, Leslie Katter, Michael Mohammed, Nikola Printz, Kelly Rubinsohn, Carmello Tringali, and Sarah Young. Several of the evening's performers are current students or alumni from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Recently called "impressive newcomers" in the Bay Guardian's 2012 Upstage/Downstage Awards, Mojo Theatre produces performances that push the boundaries and perceptions of live performances through a dynamic style that fuses art forms such as film, live music, traditional theatre, and more.
