Matthew Dunster will direct the Globe's first full-scale production of Troilus and Cressida this summer, featuring Olivier Award-winner Matthew Kelly as Pandarus, with Laura Pyper and Paul Stocker as the ill fated lovers Troilus and Cressida. Other casting includes Jamie Ballard as Ulysses and Paul Hunter as Thersites. Set during the latter years of the Trojan War, Shakespeare fills his ancient tale with savage comedy, great passion and vivid characters.
Matthew Kelly joins the Globe directly from his acclaimed performance in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf at the Trafalgar Studios. Other recent work includes Howard Barker's Victory at the Arcola Theatre, Salieri in Amadeus for John Doyle at Wilton's Music Hall and Forgotten Voices at the Riverside Studios and Edinburgh Festival. In 2004 Matthew received the award for Best Actor at the 2004 Olivier Awards for his role as Lennie in Of Mice and Men.
Director Matthew Dunster has already made a striking impact at the Globe following his explosive production of The Frontline in 2008 and 2009. His recent directing work includes You Can See the Hills at the Young Vic and Macbeth at the Royal Exchange, Manchester. Later this year, he will direct the new Told by an Idiot show at the Barbican.
Laura Pyper will appear as Jane Fairfax in the 2009 BBC dramatisation of Emma. Her stage work includes Don Juan in Soho at the Donmar Warehouse and Blackwater Angel at Finborough Theatre. Paul Stocker recently appeared in Overspill at Soho Theatre and A Conversation at the Royal Exchange, Manchester. Jamie Ballard was acclaimed for his Hamlet for Jonathan Miller in 2008 and has also appeared in Some Trace of Her, War Horse and Saint Joan at the National Theatre, plus numerous RSC productions. Paul Hunter returns to the Globe after his successful performance as Bottom in the 2008 production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Troilus and Cressida will evoke classical costumes and settings, designed by Anna Fleischle (Love and Money and Some Voices at the Young Vic; Someone Else's Shoes ETT) with music by Olly Fox (The Frontline and A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare's Globe).
