THE SEAFARER Comes To Seattle Rep Theater 2/26-3/28

By:

Conor McPherson's recent Broadway hit The Seafarer comes to Seattle Repertory Theatre February 26-March 28, 2009. Set in a forgotten corner of Northern Dublin, the play centers on four old friends as they gather to face the holidays the only way they know how-with a bottle of whiskey and a deck of cards. But when a mysterious stranger arrives and wants a piece of the action, the men find themselves playing a game with devilishly high stakes. Steeped in Irish myth, the play is both darkly funny and surprisingly uplifting.

With The Seafarer, Irish playwright McPherson, 37, solidified his place as "quite possibly the finest playwright of his generation." (New York Times). The Wall Street Journal dubbed it the "Best New Play of the Year." The Seafarer plays in Seattle Rep's Bagley Wright Theatre. Previews begin February 26, with opening night set for March 4. Tickets are available through the Seattle Repertory Theatre box office seven days a week at (206) 443-2222, toll-free at (877) 900-9285, as well as online at www.seattlerep.org.

Wilson Milam returns to Seattle to direct. Milam was born in Seattle but now resides in London where he has developed a reputation for his staging of Irish plays. He was nominated for a Tony Award for his direction of Martin McDonagh's The Lieutenant of Inishmore, which he took from London to Broadway. The Seafarer cast is comprised of all local actors: Russell Hodgkinson, Shawn Telford, Sean G. Griffin, Hans Altwies, and Frank Corrado.

Performance Details: Performances of The Seafarer are at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sundays. There will be a special St. Patrick's Day performance March 17 with an after-show party. Post-play discussions will be held after the performances on Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m.; Thursday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m and Sunday, March 22 at 2 p.m. There is an audio-described performance on Saturday, March 21 at 2 p.m. and an American Sign Language (ASL)-interpreted performance on Sunday, March 22 at 2 p.m.
